  • Hobby Horse was actually a vocal trio: Mary Hopkin, her husband Tony Visconti and Ondrea Lloyd. This rare record was released on the Bell label in the U.S. in 1972. Mary and Tony married in November 1971 and divorced ten years later.

  • This is awesome! Never knew this cover existed. Thanks for posting.

  • hate to go all tech on you but her name is Mary Hopkin (No S in her name)

  • echt een zomer hit

  • heerlijk nummer, waaraan ik de beste herinneringen aan heb.

  • Used to listen to this when I lived in Wellington, New Zealand - happy golden summer, teaching the world to sing with a coke - of course!

  • This is fantastic.I didnt know that Mary was a member of this group.Ihave a cd of hers. The best of but sadly this doesnt include it.

  • corina, SUMMERTIME.

  • What else can I say than: A THING OF BEAUTY...IS A JOY FOREVER!

  • awesome song, it's summertime, summertime~!

  • She does a lovely job as does,James Browne, His version is a bit faster.

  • I love this song more than a lot of you out there, since this came out when I was in school, and it was played ALL THE TIME! lol! :oD We danced our butts off to this, over and over, all Summer. Oh! What great memories! Thanks for posting!

  • Only ever heard the Jamies version, but I really like Mary's. Thanks for posting!

  • Great thanks!

I love her "Night in the City" too.

The City is maybe Kyoto I understood, because her family spent some days/nights on her tour to Expo '70 held in OSAKA-SUITA.

    Again Thanks BearWalken!

  • I have this on a Dutch CD called 80 zonnige zomerhits and it's also on another one. Go to Hans den Besten's Mary Hopkin International Site and look out CD shops

  • is there anywere i could find this song ?? i been lookin since last summer when i first heard it at my job lol they played it like over 300 times for the season

  • On vinyl it very rarely surfaces, but it was released on a compilation CD around 1999 in Holland I think called "80 Zonnige Zomerhits" label "A-Brilliant- Compact-Disc" ABCD 30208-2

  • ok thanx

  • I heard a snatch of this song on a PBS Kids commercial-type thing. (We did get five TV channels when the weather was nice but our rabbit ears broke and now we have no TV at all. Oh well.) I loved it so I found this. HOLY COW!!! The happy and amazed expression on my face probably would have scared you. A lot. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY SPIFFY BEYOND BELIEF! THANK YOU!!!!!

  • Great! I've never heard this song. It reminds me of Mamas and Papas, such e sweet melodic summery tune. Via the net I am discovering how good Mary Hopkins was. The 1968 video is incredible. She also made some fine singles. Hughie Green was onto summat!

  • First time round for this song was the JAMIES on Epic in 1959.Following its failure to chart came a reissue in 1962 which made the Hot 100.

At the moment not even this version is on CD

  • One of my favorite songs ever. This version is great.

    Thanks for posting it.

  • Her voic is so sweet but, at the same time, it causes sadness or melancholy. Remember those were the days, or Knock knock, who's there! Thank you, Bearwalken!

  • The amazing fact about this track, No1 in Holland and Belgium, was that it was recorded in Tony's garage in Henley On Thames. Drum parts being on a std wooden chair with bass on an old T Chest Bass, both played by Tony.

Ondrea my sister sadly lives in S.Wales suffering now from MS

  • that's a great story thanks so much for sharing it with us... Strange how it never charted here in the UK, I remeber it being played loads on Tony Blackburns radio show ...

  • More info Ondrea married Lonnie Donegan;s drummer, Mark Goodwin, and in fact Mary was Ondrea's first born's (Ben) God Mother.

One sad fact is that Bell Records paid out the princely sum of, wait for it,10 quid each. Which could account for the fact that they never recorded again. Bye the way I think it was Jimmy Young would played the song every morning, for what seems years, rather than Tony Blcakburn, bt I may be wrong.

  • Ok, unfortunately, most of if not all of the above is inaccurate. Not recorded in Henley, Not in a garage, Bell records paid full and agreed royalties, and Mary is not Ben's Godmother! The reason they never recorded again was, because they chose not to.

Apologies to Tony and Mary if the inaccuracies offended.

    Regards

    ONDREA

  • Please see my previous post, the same applies here.

  • Great song, released on bell records in 1972, quite hard to obtain, it was released on cd in 1987 in I think Holland on EVA CDP 7468122 "Hello Summertime" 21 zomerhits Hobby Horse were mary Hopkin, Tony Visconti and Ondrea Lloyd They released only the one single, 'Summertime, Summertime'. It was a hit in Europe and in Japan.
