why cant pete townshend play like this today he sucks and should never have switched to fender because its the same for clapton his tone went bad after the 60,s only certain people are meant to play fenders like srv hendrix blackmore buddy guy yngwie malmsteen they r more individual than gibson players
Why the hell do people compare this song to Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell.. They aren't even the same song, they are completely different.. I don't know how u can even compare The Who to Black Sabbath in the first place!
The boys were on this one....I just admired the last 3 seconds. They.....all.....stopped. Live? Terrific. Pete's legs did a little windmill...and.... stopped. I look at this and at the Isle of Wight '77 show and see why Pete was despondent.
I have the full bootleg of this, i take it this was off the original 30 Years Maximum R&B? either way this was a sick concert its to bad that the who, and the opening band Tull(Which i also have the bootleg of) don't remaster this show i mean they both had a GREAT PREFORMANCE That night.
I actually think that modern rock is better than 60's-70's rock by a wide margin. But....The Who are the exception and still more sophisticated and better. Yes, Keith Moon is the most talented drummer in history, Pete Townshend the best writer and the very best live song EVER ......is Magic Bus on Live at leeds.....Thanks for posting this rare vid.....
@Motoicon The rock is a VERY BIG SHIT from the late 70s, with groups of NWOBHM, the disappearance of groups rooted blues and progressive dinosaurs do not exist ... The only good point is the emergence of some good groups of new wave and punk (I do not mean the Pistols, of course LOL)
Period 80 'is the worst rock (at least for me rock and metal are different), appearance of sub genres of metal ...
But groups of the same movement as Led Zeppelin and Who do not exist ...
Man, Pete far outclasses the guitarists of thd Beatles, Stones. and even the Kinks. Not like I'm worthy to even carry thei luggage. Shout out to Steve Marriott
Gibson SG through a Hiwatt amp! Still gives me goose-bump's!! Especially in Pete's hand's!! I have a copy of this on VHS titled Maximum R&B, which I bought in the late 90's, but recently purchased it again on DVD and this song and a few other thing's were not on it!?!? What the hell guy's? These are fucking classic performances!!! Ya, John's a little flat at time's, but so what! It's great stuff!!!!!
@BritIronRebel Composer19691 must be given some slack, I suppose. The sound quality on this is a bit muffled. One would have to have heard "Live at Leeds" to appreciate the quality of the band's performance. Indeed, I do hope they clean these tapes up asap, 'cause they need - and deserve - it. (And those tapes are further deteriorating ever so slightly day by day.)
@Composer19691 off-key? You're talking about one of the greatest rock singers ever seen on Earth, a living legend who's around still now in his sixties and whose voice still today is incredible for strength and vocal extension. Nothing to do with yr shit Lady Gaga and so on who have no voice and will never have till they live.
@nocturnus65 Exept that Roger Daltrey DOESN'T sing this song. It's John Entwistle singing. But still, I agree that he's not too much out of key, considering this is a live show.
@whorumessinwith I wouldn't say. His voice sounds a lot like Roger's. Anyway, watching the clip better, I must admit you're right. Roger only sings backing vocals.
@Composer19691: Doesn't open with their best vocal performance, and Entwistle is merely a good vocalist in band with a great one (Townshend), and one of the greatest (Daltrey). That said, The Who usually sounded remarkably like they do on their studio albums. Most bands, even some big names, didn't sound very good even when when they added musicians for the tour.
Now this is disappointing... I was expecting the who covering black sabbaths heaven and hell... Even though this couldn't be cuz it's 1970- not 1980 ;)
That's a crime - not mentioning John at all. So what if he didn't run around, swing his microphone and windmill his guitar? You gotta credit the bass player too!
man... how can you say this is bad, and compare it to a band live sabbath... these guys are putting all the energy and sound into a song they have and they're tight... tighter than you so ease up!
@alec12 Who cares if they were bigger? Popularity does not always equal quality. Both Sabbath and The Who are two of the greatest bands I've ever heard and people are usually right to praise them. That dudes comment however was stupid, I'm sure we can all agree on this.
@Corleonetone ....Have you seen either band LIVE in the 70's I would say NO ! There is no comparison while both bands were popular but the WHO were in a League of there own,...Sabbath couldnt even quilify to be roadies for the WHO !
@Corleonetone Black Sabbath sucks. Tommy Iommi really lost the tips of his fingers when he stuck them up his boyfriends ass, and the dude squeezed and twisted. It broke them right off.
@Corleonetone black sabbath has no melody it has no rhythm it has no energy it is booring. this song is simple but complicated and thats what makes it so good

No???? The title says (live 1970 - USA). The details say: "The Who performing 'Heaven and Hell' live July 7th, 1970 - Tanglewood Music Shed , Massachusetts, USA ". And the beginning of the video says: "Tanglewood Music Shed, Massachusetts"
Indeed, Moon is an animal here. He doesn't play a straight beat throughout the whole song.... just jams it ahead with fills and crashes... that's rock and roll, babies!!!
"wow moonie was really on his game that night!!! "
In an interview Pete said that this concert was one of their best if not their very best performance-wise. He alluded to Keith being at his very best that night.
Oh all of us fellow drummers know that!! His style is simply impossible to duplicate. Technically skilled? Not so much as incredibly original. Humanity will never, EVER produce another talent like Moonie.
OMFG - I was at this show - In The 9th Phukkin' Row, slightly right center (Stage Left), directly in front of P.T. and his HIWATT wall of terror - Awesome show! "Live at Leeds" had just been released, and Jethro Tull was the opening act - The "Benefit" album tour for them. This was the last real Rock Concert ever held at Tanglewood - They didn't expect and couldn't handle 30,000 plus people, most without tickets and so pkukkin' high they were looking down at the sky - A memorable event it was!!!
I always figured it was something like an overcrowding issue to cause Tanglewood to become an orchestra pit and never have rock bands again.... actually I found it hard to believe they ever had rock bands when I found this, and I'm from MA. Moonie must be to blame somehow....... bless his soul. What a fucking band.... The Who..... at the hieght of their powers right here... I have to watch this again. Ok, thanks for listening....
then i saw the who in 82.. mind you I saw the kids are alright in a movie theater where you could drink beer and smoke pot and i was hooked after that movie ..long live rock!!
All I have to say is how in the hell did we ever manage without youtube before youtube came along!!??I remember cranking this tune off the rarities lp on my sony cassette walkman!!
If I remember, the Who would occasionally alternate 'Heaven and Hell' and 'Can't Explain' as the opening song because 'Heaven and Hell' allowed Pete to get really warmed up.
It's so amazing to realize just how far rock had come in one decade! 1964-1970 was just a friggin' tornado, avalanche, snowball, whatever you want to call it of immense talent pushing the boundaries further and further with every year that passed and every album that succeeded each band's previous effort! What a time to have lived and witnessed all that! To bring those records home and have your mind blown repeatedly.
i really love how townshend pretty much just relies on those really overdriven HiWatts, and uses the volume/tone knobs of his guitar to affect his sound, and uses a fuzz pedal when he needs to really lose it. Very simple set up but totally effective.
No kidding - I am sick of people trying to compare the two - Keith was and always will be the greatest rock drummer that ever lived. Others were good in their own right, but Keith was alone in his field.
Do I ever agree! Why not release this on DVD? I have the Isle of Wight performance and this one tops it. Excellent guitar work and of course Keith's crazy drumming.
RAW POWER.

Look at Pete Townsend stepping back, stepping forward, over and over again.
"Man, the crowd is so far away. I need that energy, that amazing fan feedback! I should go closer to them." Steps forward.
"My God, that's a lot of people. Some of them look pretty rough...I don't want to get too close." Steps back.
"Wait, I'm too far away again." Steps forward.
"What's happening?!" Steps back.
"Aah! Step forward! No! Step back! WHY DO YOU TORTURE ME?!"

Good for saving a bit of energy, too. If you watch closely, Keith hits the drums/cymbals 35 times for every Pete stroke of the guitar.
No matter what, it all adds up to the ballsiest, biggest sound in rock history!
LONG LIVE ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!

watching this makes me wonder why people seem to think John Bonham form Led Zeppelin is better than keith Moon? Hes not a patch on keith

No kidding - I am sick of people trying to compare the two - Keith was and always will be the greatest rock drummer that ever lived. Others were good in their own right, but Keith was alone in his field.

I agree. I love Keith's manic bashing on the drums. It totally augments and complements what John and Pete are doing.

Do I ever agree! Why not release this on DVD? I have the Isle of Wight performance and this one tops it. Excellent guitar work and of course Keith's crazy drumming.

one of the great who concerts that should be released to the masses to enjoy! instead of wasting away!

Pete said that this concert was their best and certainly better than they were at Isle of Wight where Keith was pretty loaded.
