I'm doing a one-man show (well, my teacher is letting me have a LOT of "supporting actors"--so I guess it's a play) about Benazir Bhutto, and it's so hard to write! Because so many people say she was corrupt, so it's hard to establish an "angle" and a "concept"...but everytime I see interviews, I ALWAYS reassure myself that she had good intentions--at least "good" in the sense that she really did want to establish democracy and a modern society in Pakistan.
She was not corrupt. The allegations she faced were ludacris. They accused her of theft for brokering a deal and receiving an honest commission. The bank imbellished the records and conducted a false investigation in order to discredit her. Failing this they had her killed. God rest her soul. We will carry on.
Sharia law and militant extremism is what breeds terrorism. Bhutto brought modernization to Pakistan and promoted secularism. I don't defend her administration because it's too soon for history to judge at this point. But you cannot deny that if elected, she would have been the taliban's nightmare because not only was she a woman against terrorism, she would have had the legitimacy and mandate to go after them because she was democratically elected. She was indispensable.
If she became the taliban's "worst nightmare" it would be ironic because her government helped to create the taliban. Pakistan, under her government, was one of only three nations in the world to recognize the taliban rule.

Mr. Jinnah's main primary objective was to set up a state where Muslims are free to rule with Non-Muslims. He knew from the early 40's by the reactions and the attitudes of the Hindu extremists that Muslims would be a subjected and a "minority" society. In my opinion Mr Nawaz Sharif, Ms Benazir as well as Mr Pervez Musharraf need to do lot of charitable & social work in Pakistan first. When Benazir came back to Pakistan in the 1990s people had high hopes that democracy will be restored and we have a good leadership.Unfortunately this remained a dream.When Benazir came into power she she and her husband went on a looting rampage without any regard for anything.When she was removed from power she went abroad and started giving anti Pakistan statements.Now we Pakistanis HATE these bhuttos and dont want them to come back in Pakistan,politics or power EVER!

i remember i was at uni in india when benazir came into power. we all jubliated. i remember chaiwallas giving away free tea and snacks to people as a mark of freedom to pakistani people.
india is lucky to have 'true' democracy and no military mischief in politics.
