What happened was, that Microsoft, having worked very long on Vista, realized that there is a second way of earning money, than making good products: You simply sell them well. With a well prepared campaign, you do not even need any programmers. Only advertisers.
And so they did. Half way through Vista, they fired every programmer, hired only advertisers. The result you all know: It was a tremendous success. And mmaking programs without a single programmer, is now the brand of Microsoft.
In your dreams, without Microsoft, there would be very weak PC Gaming, very weak service for corporations that prefer Windows computers, very weak VIDEO gaming (Xbox 360 - Forza 3 and Halo), and much more.
I use Linux for on-line stuff , and I only use Windows for some software and Games, but I never let it get on the web ever... and you know what ? It worked I have had not one problem with Windows after I started using Linux as my main OS...

The tools are there within Linux (uses OpenGL, like macs do too - lots of potential dev.)... While games could be brought to Linux, it's mostly shortsighted primarily due to Windows being sold as an "everything" system (whereas Linux is still viewed "OS for server use" by many) - it's easy to develop cross-platform if the platform uses similar codebase, but if that code changes developers are opt to settle for the more popular system (so I've been told in the past) thus DirectX > OpenGL
