Incredibly rare: an interviewer who actually listens to the interviewee's answers. Compliments to this woman who exposes yet another level of genius within Cohen. Brava!
Very refreshing to watch this ancient interview. Insightful questions, brilliant answers, all in shrill contrast to the rubbish that is broadcasted these days. Thank you for uploading!
I love people like this - people who can really use language. They're the best people to quote from, I was only thirty seconds through the interview, and I was already being inspired by some of his philosophy.
L. Cohen is just like all other artists who find themselves under the spotlight of public analysis. He loves it and he hates it. He basks in the glow of the young lady's smile, and his own delight in this is plain to see. She, seems a bit taken with his smiles and his intellect, but she doesn't seem like his type. She doesn't really like him, she likes the word play more.
Then; we see his unwillingness to bare his artistic depth with the "public" - because he can't.
Hahahahahahahaha Oh my God that is EXACTLY how i felt watching another part of this intreview just sent the link to all my friends and said EXACTLY that!
He lived in Greece. Leonard went to Greece in 1960 and bought a house on the island Hydra. He lived there on and off for many years with a Norwegian blond named Marianne Jensen (So long, Marianne). I think he finally left in 1971, but he went back there every once in a while.
He was wickedly playful in that interview...and she just about kept herself intact!...LC is very seductive. He knew it. then, and had some gentle fun with the interviewer..... he has become slightly! more subtle now .....but he still knows exactly how to weave his way around our hearts and minds with the images in his poetry, A gentleman...? yes...but a naughty one...
Remember when Barrie Humphries in the character of Dame Edna Everage, said: "Everybody wants a son-in-law like Elton [John]" before it was conclusive he was gay. The new adage is: Everybody wants a son-in-law like Leonard!
there is a lot of weird sexual tension in this interview....there's like no respectful emotional distance between them, which is odd. In one way I think it's cool, in another way I just think he's being a jerk. It's the same with most of these type of figures - they seem to not care about the other person's feelings.....interesting though
you nailed it when you mentioned the tension. she's either totally into him or can't understand a word he's saying. probably both. i mean let's face it: she's not exactly pickin' up what he's layin' down.
but he's playing it strange too. it's like he's trying to stick it to her for being so square, but doesn't wanna be mean about it.
i keep feeling like the editor should have cut at various points in this interview. if only to release the odd, unpalpable tension that crept in.
" At 17, he had a country-western trio called the Buckskin Boys. "
Great trivia, never knew this. Why have I never seen a biography on him? Can you recommend something? All the years I've admired him, about 35 of them, I've only seen his bookos of poetry, never a book on his life.
This was an extremely good interview. It's fun to see him as cheeky quick witted youngster.I have seen and heard many interviews with Cohen. Although he's always a gentleman, he's very disarming in interviews and, in his own soft spoken way seems to go into a rather vicious battle of wits. She holds up very well.
That is an accurate comment; I can't say that I would relish a verbal duel with him and he is eager to reach the intellectual high ground. He absolutely dominates the exchanges between them, but she seems enamoured of him as she is being demolished.
A very funny interview with a real charmer, but there is an undercurrent of "I will win this discussion. As for the comment on politics, he was not saying it was inconsequential as much as Canada not really needing much government at that time
Yes! It would seem like it would be a pleasure to be a victim of that "vicious battle of wits." The clever person can take a stab at someone without the victim even realizing it has happened, and make it a pleasant experience at the same time. Do you know where to find more interviews around the web, I'd love to see them, have been a fan since 1974.
The tension between these two, not as interviewer and interviewee, but as man and woman, is captivating. I love Leonard Cohen's wry smiles and sincerity.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Leonard was good, but I wish he'd had been more aware of intellectual strands, like that of his fellow Canadian writer Charles Taylor, whose literature is all about re-affirming the life of Government in Canada. Musicians - even the most literate and sober like Cohen - tend to fall into these forms of life wherein minds are vacuous but intentions are great. I hope that changes.
you sir, need either more education on what is truly important in life, or simply to pull your head out of your arse. I choose Cohen's poetic views on love and life over inconsequential politics any day.
You're not getting my point - or perhaps I wasn't clear enough. Why not have a nice synthesis, the poesy and insights of Cohen, and an eye for politics? Cohen seems to be simply dismissive of the latter, citing "we don't need politics." You don't need to be terribly smart, or require more education says you, to grasp the necessity of government. Yes, I am critical of Cohen, and you by extension, if the idea here is to disregard the practice of politics and simply sing songs and read poetry.
Looks to me like you like dabating and your own idea much. And so you rush to find something to proof your wiew. "We dont need politics" does not mean that Cohen meant that, it just means that it fitted the song he sang, whatever the song is saying or who it realy is that says it in his song. Yes he is singing it but that des not mean that he means it. Or he is showing us a feeling he or someone sometimes have.
I dont care of the debate here. Just the essence of detating. Dont cheat in it.
Politics, like money, is a must have for our current society; But for our lives, which Cohen, I feel, believes to be based on love, it IS inconsequential.
I don't spend much time on the internet, but tonight I have little else to do and I am amazed at how single minded people are. We live in one world, but with so many different facets, that to argue with romantics will just make you look simple.
This is hilarious, and you can see her getting charmed but trying, desperately, to resist and be the distant interviewer.
On the other hand it is one of those interviews where the two speakers are totally out of sync. Like when she asks where he wants to get the tattoo. And the patience Cohen shows when she talks about "ending up a poet".
Thanks so much for posting this. It is illuminating, and showing how fully formed he was really back then already.
...and...she's not really listening to him. She doesn't really understand what he's saying. Just when the subject is getting interesting, she steers the conversation away. or is it just me??
His very personal way to behold her...such deep long and yet not invasive glances. How interesting, gives you an insight that goes beyond words, and those words are deep as well.
now 74 leonard cohen has designed himself to be humourous, poignant, flippant, elegant, shallow, and deep all at the same time. this interview way back in 1966 shows the seeds of his genius already well in bloom.
i'm impressed. this is a tv show, they're sitting in a studio and there are cameras and other people - an artifical situation. but there is a spirit of affection, warmth and love. i'm sure they slept together, there seems to be so much attraction among them.
Thanks for posting that; I'd love to see the other 50 minutes. Saw LC in Glasgow last week - brilliant. It's odd to hear him talk about just starting out singing in this clip.
I don't think there's 50 mins missing - apparently the show was interspersed with sketches and music which have been cut out (that's why it's a little bit jerky). I'd love to see the end though. Hope the Glasgow show was great - I saw him in London twice!
Wow, that's amazing, thanks so much for posting. What a strange interview! He makes her look silly in such a charming way. A fascinating insight into a great man. The rest would be fantastic...
that interviewer has such a closed mind, almost infantile... Cohen is a great example of a young man with freedom of thought and expression , in a society then that was emotionally crippled!!

saw him copenhagen on sat night, best gig ever. and i've seen some gigs. played perfectly for over 3 hours, with all the humility mystery and charisma with which he has become known...timeless
I bet he's a killer in a bar. Please post the rest of this interview, I just want to see the bit where she gets her coat and they disapear in a cab. Great.
Leonard Cohen always has a sense of humor. I saw him in concert last night in St. John's and between songs he would talk and tell jokes... it was the best show I've ever seen..
no your about to... melt on that chair until we BOTH end up singing in your bedroom with the windows open. she really does "attempt" to define his personality.
Hasn't changed a bit since the early '60s. Only his body and his voice have
changed, of course. But Lenny is Lenny is Lenny is Lenny...playful, articulate,
self-deprecating, a bit of a flirt, always a gentleman and a friend. This makes me
smile inside.
