They were possibly coming up with the idea but portal runs on the source engine, which is half-life 2's engine.

The thing in the box is called a Chumtoad, it was cut out from the actual Half life game, it was supposed to be in Xen and it was supposed to be very special cause it was different from all the other Xen creatures (forgot how)
