So it's been a few months since the WaPo article detailing this great Skinner's planned demise. Any word that the cathedral gentry have recanted and will keep this great instrument as she's been? Help me out here, I'm a DC born/raised native, now living/working in NC. What news?
All is quiet at the corner of Mass & Wisconsin. No one is saying anything. They keep scheduling organ concerts, which would seem to indicate that removal of the existing instrument has been put off. And the Cathedral is having big financial problems (that predated the national economic freefall), which might force them to put the project on hold (hopefully permanently).
I think he did release a CD several years ago of some performances on an organ in NYC. Google Nicholas White: he's got a web site, & there may be some info. on it. He's a hell of an organist, isn't he?
I am a former DC Chapter member of the AGO, and I just don't understand. Maybe the Cathedral is laced wih stupid spray or maybe the incense have Spanish Fly in it. I have heard this organ many times in person, and wow! I heard Doug Majors play the Weaver toccata, and when he got to the pedal run at the end, it felt like cannons going off! What a travesty!!
Thanks for posting this WaPo article. Aside from the reporter butchering Mozart's famous moniker for the organ, and her calling the WNC organ an "Aeolian-Skinner" of 1938, it was a fairly informative article. Thanks to these wonderful video/music posts on YouTube, I'm again reminded of how inane this idea of tearing out this treasured organ really is.
Wow...that was a brilliant performance of that piece.
My music teacher played it as the voluntary at our 2006 carol service at my school he played it very well you are the only person I could say played as well if not better than he did.
See my response farther down this thread. I'd love to be able to tell folks who he is
(I'm the film producer, not the organist). But I need to get his permission first. Last I heard, he was working in NYC, but I don't know anything more.
Better get back soon. They're tearing this classic out this summer & replacing it with a 100-rank Dobson in the choir & a 90-rank Casavant in the rear gallery. They'll probably be very nice -- but they won't sound anything like this one.
Will all pipe divisions be playable from ither console? Are you the orgainist at the cathedral? The church I attend will be building a new sanctuary. they have no organ. Will any of the part of this instrument be available? Thank you for your time.
I'm just an organ junkie who lives in the area. The gallery Casavant will have its own console, &, as I understand it, there will be a moveable console in front that controls both the Dobson & Casavant. I don't know what their plans are for the 150 existing ranks they're ditching (they're keeping about 40 ranks from the old Skinner). It would seem they'd make a pretty impressive instrument on their own.
Believe me, I'm not intending to shoot the messenger here, but I grew up in Silver Spring and attended services at Natl Cathedral occasionally. How in the flippin' heck could the authorities at the NC ditch a big part of this classic organ???! It's crazy, ain't it? Back in the 80's it even had 3 pipes of (real) 64' Bombarde Bass and you could only feel that low C in your pores. An awesome instrument. I know new fads in organbuilding come in, but ditching this classic oughta be a crime. G
Gball, I'm with you. I'm from the old school: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Check out the Remarks: I added a link yesterday to a Washington Post article that explains osme of the rationale behind the move. Believe me, there are lots of organists like Reilly Lewis & organ-lovers in rhe DC area that think this is a boneheaded effort.
Usually when you post a video here it loses resolution, sound quality etc. I hired a professional cameraman with professional equipment taped a few hymns and posted them and they sound lousy and look lousy as well in comparison. This was superb all the way from his playing to the sound/picture quality. BRAVO!! and thanks a55b47 you're the best!
Can't say yet. I taped it & have the right to Tube it. But I'd like to get his permission before I broadcast his name worldwide -- & I'm having trouble contacting him.

Perfect tempo for the room you're in! Some go too fast mushing it all together and some go too slow making it sound remedial. You were GREAT!!!

I was somewhat taken aback by the "Queen of Instruments" thing, too ;-) But I operate on the basis that any ink about pipe organs is welcome......

What is it with Americans? They have a great instrument, so what do they do - throw it away and get another (two!). Too much money I guess!

That's some hot voicing and easy coordination.
This is why everyone falls at Nicholas White's feet. *swoon*

Nicely done. Reminds me of E Power Biggs. I look forward to returning to this cathedral and have another listen.

Played very well but I wish there was more reeds in the manuals and less 32' bass in the pedal. Oher than that it sounds very musical. 5*stars! :)

Looks like a young Bryn Terfel but I'm not aware that he plays the organ.

Yeah, he does, doesn't he? I expect he sings better than Terfel plays the organ ;-)
