I also would like to point out to people that Paula fell into the singing part, that was not her dream, dancing was and she continues to be highly sought after for her talents. Yes, Paula had to learn to dance, particularly tap dancing but she honed her craft which made her a sought after choreographer. Sorry, but Paula was the best. I love the men and architecture. It's pretty sick how the backup dancers slowly un-weave themselves from the bars and join Paula. This was the same night Milli Vanilli won 3 AMA's, Anita Baker hosted, Bobby Brown was at his best, MC Hammer, Lenny Kravitz, New Kids on the Block, Tone Loc, Warrant performed, Prince was there. In this case, the student DID NOT surpass the teacher. Paula's moves were more daring, showing more athleticism and precision, more energy. I prefer Paula! But I agree, today's artists do not put on shows like this anymore. Today's artists act like they're dancing at the strip club.

Janets moves have always been super precise, crisp, and sharp. Paula's is more of a "jazz dance" type. Equally good - but Janet slayed Paula on the performance. I'd like to see an award show were they put Paula, Janet, Mya, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, all on stage together in a dance routine....that would be interesting to watch. lol
they both were wonderful and it makes me proud to know that this ever existed... especially considering we never get entertained quite like that anymore!

Of course Paula's performance was better. She WAS a better dancer than Janet. Paula's a choreographer who created her own moves. She did an amazing job choreographing those men, as well. Very polished and intricate. Janet did a great job doing a completely different style. They both did great jobs at being themselves. BUT, Janet had continually improved over the years. She did better tours, with great shows. AND she sang live, most of the time. Paula kind of fizzled out quickly.
Did you know that Paula had an accident that injured her back and made her have to step out of the spot light because she couldn't tour or dance like before. Not because she wasn't popular. She kept the injury to herself and only revealed what happen after she got on Idol

Poor Janet! Her dancing is so mechanical which is partly due to the mediocre choreography which, as lame as it is, shows her limitations as a dancer. She's a sweet person and fun performer, but Paula Abdul blows the roof off the stadium in every way!

Nothing Janet has done compares to her Rhythym Nation and Miss You Much videos. After those, her dancing is only pleasant and unoriginal, most always looking like the normal stuff you see all the time. As for awards, especially music awards, they mostly reflect what's popular, not excellence.
Well I think that it depends what you are basing the comparison on. Dance wise Paula was superior. Her routinues were much more complicated and she did a variety of mixed steps, including tap. Janet danced to choreography as well but you can tell that it is much less complicated. That being said Janet really shines in her performance because it seems to be more about her whereas Paula's is more about a spectacle. I call it a draw
Paula is a great dancer but Janet is much better, Paula attended dance academies and studied dance. Janet on the other hand NEVER did all of those things, NATURALLY talented she and her brother learned to dance just by looking at Fred Astaire in old Hollywood movies! Now that's what you call raw, natural talent.

Before Paula worked with her, Janet was not that famous as a solo artist if I'm not mistaken, and Paula's choreography probably did teach her a thing or two-- there are a lot of similarities in the way those two style their performances. Also, Paula would not probably not be as famous as she is without the Jacksons.

I LOVED AND IDOLIZED THEM BOTH when I was little (lol I was only 2 in 1990). However, it's a tie. I think Paula's performance had JUUUST a bit too much going on and Janet's performance as JUUUST a bit a the dull side; I wish they could've taken a bit from each other's playbook and found a happy medium. They're both talented though. Side Note: I liked Janet's outfit better :)

I completely agree with everything you said. But this is the 1990 American Music Awards, not MTV. My mother has so many tapes. I'm thankful to her for creating a video archive like this. This was the same night Milli Vanilli won 3 AMA's, Anita Baker hosted, Bobby Brown was at his best, MC Hammer, Lenny Kravitz, New Kids on the Block, Tone Loc, Warrant performed, Prince was there. Much more. This was a great show. They don't make em like this anymore.

In this case, the student DID NOT surpass the teacher. Paula's moves were more daring, showing more athleticism and precision, more energy. I prefer Paula! But I agree, today's artists do not put on shows like this anymore. Today's artists act like they're dancing at the strip club.

Janets moves have always been super precise, crisp, and sharp. Paula's is more of a "jazz dance" type. Equally good - but Janet slayed Paula on the performance. I'd like to see an award show were they put Paula, Janet, Mya, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, all on stage together in a dance routine....that would be interesting to watch. lol

Either way, I love this era when the competition was tight, all performers that made it to the top like Paula and Janet were uber talented. We had Madonna too :) But the strongest here is Paula.

If Janet wouldnt've gotten as far as she did without being Michaels sister SIMPLY because of her voice, then Paula wouldnt've gotten as far as she did either, and last time I checked Paula got pretty damn far before retiring from music, and her last name aint Jackson. Also, being Michaels sister got Janet a contract (just like it did Rebbie & LaToya) Being Michaels sister didnt help her sell over 100 million albums, ask Rebbie what it did for her.

Of course Paula's performance was better. She WAS a better dancer than Janet. Paula's a choreographer who created her own moves. She did an amazing job choreographing those men, as well. Very polished and intricate. Janet did a great job doing a completely different style. They both did great jobs at being themselves. BUT, Janet had continually improved over the years. She did better tours, with great shows. AND she sang live, most of the time. Paula kind of fizzled out quickly.

Did you know that Paula had an accident that injured her back and made her have to step out of the spot light because she couldn't tour or dance like before. Not because she wasn't popular. She kept the injury to herself and only revealed what happen after she got on Idol

Poor Janet! Her dancing is so mechanical which is partly due to the mediocre choreography which, as lame as it is, shows her limitations as a dancer. She's a sweet person and fun performer, but Paula Abdul blows the roof off the stadium in every way!

Nothing Janet has done compares to her Rhythym Nation and Miss You Much videos. After those, her dancing is only pleasant and unoriginal, most always looking like the normal stuff you see all the time. As for awards, especially music awards, they mostly reflect what's popular, not excellence.

Well I think that it depends what you are basing the comparison on. Dance wise Paula was superior. Her routinues were much more complicated and she did a variety of mixed steps, including tap. Janet danced to choreography as well but you can tell that it is much less complicated. That being said Janet really shines in her performance because it seems to be more about her whereas Paula's is more about a spectacle. I call it a draw

Paula is a great dancer but Janet is much better, Paula attended dance academies and studied dance. Janet on the other hand NEVER did all of those things, NATURALLY talented she and her brother learned to dance just by looking at Fred Astaire in old Hollywood movies! Now that's what you call raw, natural talent.

@LaTigraVioleta Nothing against Janet-- she's a skilled and fabulous dancer, but I would have to disagree only because I think Janet and Paula mutually owe each other. Before Paula worked with her, Janet was not that famous as a solo artist if I'm not mistaken, and Paula's choreography probably did teach her a thing or two-- there are a lot of similarities in the way those two style their performances. Also, Paula would not probably not be as famous as she is without the Jacksons.

She started to blow up after she took control of her destiny and fired her father as her manager...Her talent and dancing skills were always there I wouldn't say that Paula taught her anything...she grew as an artist and that's why I said that Paula never taught Janet how to dance because it's true Janet already had that

Look at Janet from COntrol to Rhythm Nation to Janet. and her other albums she's more versatile Paula has a particular way she dances...

I LOVED AND IDOLIZED THEM BOTH when I was little (lol I was only 2 in 1990). However, it's a tie. I think Paula's performance had JUUUST a bit too much going on and Janet's performance as JUUUST a bit a the dull side; I wish they could've taken a bit from each other's playbook and found a happy medium. They're both talented though. Side Note: I liked Janet's outfit better :)

Paula was great but her performance of the song was like a series of stunts that didn't convey the sensuality of the lyrics.
Janet used her choreography to bring the "Escapade" to life.
Paula did not teach Janet to dance, Janet was being choreographed by Debbie Allen on Fame prior to her work with Paula. Furthermore, Janet has choreographed her own routines including the legendary "Rhythm Nation."
