Alas, I didn't trap him. He only goes once a day, which is why he lets a lot out at a time. UPDATE: Neo is doing great. He uses the toilet consistently and I no longer fill the tub with water.
Oh! And he also gets a treat (Whiska's chicken flavor treat) when he poos in the toilet. Again, this is only for pooping and he only gets one treat, which he loves!
Eventually I had the bright idea of putting a healthy layer of water in the tub so he wouldn't get in it and I used it as a bargaining tool. Now, once he poos in the toilet (and this goes for pooing only), I let the water out of the tub so he can play in it. That works! Eventually I won't have to put any water in the tub at all, but I have to work at his pace.
OMG I am such an idiot for not thinking of this. My cat is training with a CitiKitty right now and has been taking dumps in the tub for the past three weeks. Now instead of watching her like a hawk I can just fill it with water. Thanks!
He is very curious so he would always stick his head in the toilet just to see what was happening in there. Also, although he didn't mind peeing in the toilet, it took a while for him to agree to poo in there. There were times when he'd rather use the bathtub. I tried putting slats of wood on the tub to keep him from getting in there, but he'd always find a way because he loved playing in the tub, and the obstacles became a game.
I tried using the disposable tin pan trick. I placed the tin pan into the basin and bent it so that it fit snugly inside. I put litter in it. Then I put a small hole in the middle of the basin. Over the course of a few weeks I increased the size of the hole so Neo would have less to scratch and get used to eliminating inside the toilet.
Once he was using the bowl with no litter in it, one is supposed to start filling the bowl with a tiny amount of water so the cat can get used to relieving himself into and over water. Neo was having none of it. On to plan B.
Then I replaced the litter box with a steel bowl that I placed under the seat inside the toilet bowl basin. I filled the steel bowl with litter and let Neo use it like that for a while, but each day I would add less and less litter to bowl so he'd get used to not having something to scratch. (As you can see, he still likes to scratch though!)
Neo and I started by using the "Bowl in the basin" technique. I moved his litter box beside the toilet, and each day I put another telephone book underneath the litter box to raise it higher in the air. Neo would have to jump onto the toilet to climb in the box. Once the litter box was taller than the toilet, I moved the box over onto the toilet seat and let him use it like that for a day or two.
Here are a few Web sites that explain how one can toilet train one's cat. Neo refused to continue past a certain point with one technique and I had to switch to another. I'll explain.
That's Cool, teaching a cat to potty in the toilet. How did you teach NEO to do that. I think other cat owners would like to know how to do it. Are you teaching him to flush? Yes I know, he dosen't have the upper body strength to do that. That's one cool cat.
Amazing...But I would be more amazed if the cat would have the courtasie to wipe it's but with some TP

I think that was a human reincarnated as a cat. First, it uses the toilet, then it gets bathtime.

You are right! Neo has thumbs. He's polydactyl (which, you might be surprised to learn, is acutally a dominant trait in cats).

why was the cat digging in the corners? Was he doing last checks to make sure he still had to use the toilet?
Not sure about cat toilet training. Sure is useful, especially in urban areas, but seems a little odd, I suppose.
On the other hand . . . if I had a cat and it shat all over my face when I slept, say, I would be quite keen for it to learn this.

Does your cat have to be a certain age to do this? I was going to train my 6 month old kitty to do it, and I'm wondering if that's a good Idea.
