I like this ending better than the 2007 ending. I just can't watch Anne running up and down the street and the final kiss takes too long to get there.
This movie had me sitting on the edge of my seat just wondering when these two people would FINALLY speak their hearts/minds. I'm so delighted to see they did get around to it and saved their future happiness. Thanks for sharing this great movie.
The transformation of her character is great, as is the vileness of those small, mean, nasty snobs. I think this is the 3rd version for me...I keep thinking I'll tire of it but I don't. Austen's dialog and sense of pathos is fabulous.
My son is dating a girl whose family is pernicious and I told him to watch this 200-year-old story. Some things never really change, do they?
Absolutely flawless final scene. I have two favourite lines: the father's incredulous remark "You want to marry Anne? Whatever for?" and her sister's myopic "You must stop monopolizing Captain Wentworth--it's a very bad habit of yours" followed by Anne's brisk but polite little nod. This brilliantly captures the spirit of the novel and is a charming conclusion to a wonderful story. Thank you so much for posting.
Thank you deeply to have provide us with such a treat, my mum and I have a copy but am afraid there is an ocean between me and it, and being reunited through your upload is so so fantastic...
well I like this version better as far as story and accuracy to the novel and characterizations, and in fact the actors do an adequate job, but I just can never get past how homely they are. I am usually attracted to unusual-looking people, but these two are just beyond the pale, and too old for the parts! That may make me sound shallow but Capt W is supposed to be absolutely handsome in the book, and Anne is pretty too (even if she lost her "bloom", but regained it later in the book).

I like both adaptations, but what bothered me the most about this one, is Elizabeth's portrayal. It was overexaggerated. As far as making her look too uncivil for a lady of her importance in the family.
I didn't like this movie when I watched it some years ago mainly because of Anne and the actress playing her (the staring). I just watched it a second time and loved it! I think I just wasn't getting it the first time (my poor English skills might have been a side-effect). Brilliant acting!
just an FYI, I've met Sally Hawkins several times in Notting Hill. She is such a grumpy cow. Every time I've seen someone recognise her, she rolls her eyes and pushes past them.
Personally, I think people are being incredibly shallow. Not everyone can be your Hollywood beauty; these are real people, doing a fabulous job! I love Anne in this one; she's perfect.
The designation Masterpeice must be used very sparingly but surely this qualifies. I love this version much more than the 2007 version. Amanda Root did a wonderful job as Anne Elliot. One thing I would have love to see would be the reaction or Mrs. Croft and Admiral Croft .
These actors are PERFECT! And they can actually ACT.
As for Anne being plain, she is far prettier than a lot of so-called hollywood beauties (all make-up and silicone). @hadtosay1 or you COULD say the reverse- a little grey-tinted make-up, a few artfully sketched pencil lines, unflattering eyeshadow and voila! An attractive 32 year old woman is made to look old, tired, and defeated!
I love both 1995 and 2007 versions for different and various reasons and wish they somehow could have taken the best out of each version and combined them into one version. I don't know what it is, although this version is technically the better version (more complete and true to the book, better supporting cast and better outfits for Anne), I enjoy watching it but don't get emotional about it. The 2007 version is more moving and it always makes me cry no matter how many times I watch it.
Doe anyone know the name of the last song? In the ending, the one with the opera singer? It's so pretty. If anyone can give me the name it would be greatly appreciated.
I just finished reading Persuasion and I am convinced that it is Jane Austen's best love story (I have yet to read Northanger Abbey). I enjoyed this adaptation very much. Thanks for uploading! I am wondering however why Captain Wentworth in the end expresses his happiness much more so than Anne does.
Love this film! I'm kind of flummoxed by those complaining that CH and Amanda Root look old or unattractive. That's kind of half the point of the story - it's 8 years on and Anne has lost the "bloom" of youth, as many average looking people do as they age. She's an old maid. Wentworth, OTOH, as a man, is still considered desirable. Yet, his love is constant, and her inner beauty is exactly why he's always loved and wanted her above all others. That's the romance of the story. Geez.
@blondecat666 that's true, but I think her looks work in this adaptation because, well, she looks more 'old maid-y'. at 27, Anne's basically middle-aged by Regency lady standards, but that's a fact that's easily lost on modern audiences because to us 27 is young. Obviously, we do still have the old maid stigma, but it doesn't really start til much later in life. And Anne as spinster is key to the plot, and (sadly) having an older looking actress works as an instant visual cue for that.
I didn't dislike this adaptation, but since it is rather faithul to the book, the few unnecessary changes they made do bother me. And the kiss on the street is absurd, this never would have happened in those days. So if they did have to kiss for the audience's sake, they should have showed them kissing in their cabin after the wedding. ;-)
this is the best interpretation I have ever seen, and I think the closest to the book of Jane Austen as she saw the characters..they are not young and pretty, they are end twenties in their thirties, which in those days was considered "old" especially for a woman. Beautiful.. thank you!!!
I watched the 2007 version first.. and although this is based more on the book and its a good one; I still prefer the 2007 version. Maybe its modern.. or the actors younger and attractive.. I guess I'm shallow that way.. :-(
@wubawubas acting is the key. looks are no the issue, jane austen never mentioned looks. love is love they are later in life not 20 gossip girl get a life we can' all look like Gywneth. boring.. unrealistic is your shows today where everyone is pretty and shallow
@Aprostime123 Please don't assume that I'm an idiot who sits around watching Gossip Girl and needs to "get a life." If you enjoy this version, that's just fabulous. I personally prefer the 2007 version. Please don't attack me because I don't share the same opinion as you- goodbye!
Wentworth is always lurking in hallways and smoking rooms and the Grand Pump Room....loitering on streetcorners....delivering superfluous messages laced with dramatic ultimatums....romancing silly young things with tales of his various berths (maritime, of course)...swooping that tricorner off his soon to be grizzled head...I don't remember Anne heading out to sea..did she?

I love watching the circus performers go around the corner. I keep wondering what the reaction would be if that flame blower's fire had gotten a square inch closer to the tall man. I mean, I know it's not really THAT close, but still.....
I prefer the 2007 version. I enjoyed it so much. This lacks the tension I experienced when I read the book. But the ending of this is better. Nonetheless, Persuasion is my favorite book of Jane Austen.
Wentworth looks like he's kippered in nicotine, and Anne has lips made perhaps thin by laudanum, but it was fun to watch anyway. Thanks for posting this!
I very much like the '95 and '07 versions; both offer a different style of interpreting the story, which is why they continually make new adaptations. Both are lovable in my book.
Oh happiest of me's... Anne is away from her odious family and with the man she truly loves... Wonderful indeed... *sighs and goes sleepily off to my bed..Well it is after 11pm* :0)x
I loved how the way the Captain watched Anne throughout this whole movie, such love and pain. That letter melted my heart, and the scene where they are walking away...in their own world was more than sweet. I find it so romantic when a man writes a letter. <3 I loved Persuasion, my second favorite book of Jane Austens, and this adaptation was perfect, the characters all perfect in each role.
I don't see how he can brag about men loving more faithfully than women when Captain Bennick proves the opposite and he talked about how his sister Phoebe wouldn't have forgotten Bennick so quickly as he forgot her.
I'm thinking of "The Odyssey" by Homer. In it, Odysseus gambols with other women while his faithful wife Penelope holds down the fort at home, fending off the greedy suitors trying to win her, taking care of her household and protecting her son Telemachus from men who would kill him. There was a faithful woman indeed, especially when compared to her philandering husband.
I adore this version Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root are amazing.. isn't the end lovely where just a look says a million words... Both are happy and away from Anne's awful family... Wonderful indeed...
And we also have the wonderful Sophie Thompson (EMMA/Eastenders) and Victoria Hamilton (Larkrise to Candleford)
I read the book and I watched the two films. This 1995 version is very faithful to the works of Jane Austen.
In the 2007 movie is meaningless Captain send the letter to Anne through a friend. At that time, a man could never send a letter to an unmarried girl if he had not commitment to marriage or engagement. And their kiss in public is completely absurd.
@gauchatche, it seems the Advent Of The Blessed Kiera Knightly provoked more than one production company to break faith with the novel-reading public during the 2000's. Whole sections of Miss Austen's books were..I blush..violated. Darcy has a spat with Liz in the pouring rain, and then lopes over the marshy tussacks to coo to her at dawn. People kiss in the most extraordinary places. You're right....a man could be prosecuted for making such sleazy advances to a chaste gel.
I have no idea why the people who scripted and directed the 20007 ITV version butchered it.....it's got nothing to do with their limited budget, I'm sure. This version is amazing.........!!! We need another adaptation of Persuasion, preferably by the same people who made BBC's North and South.....Imagine Richard Armitage as Wentworth...oooo er! ;-)
@simkunni I did that several months ago, right after i had re-read persuasion. I started this, and thought "oh amanda root isn't as pretty" and didn't finish. I'm so glad I rewatched it now! Amanda root may not be as conventionally pretty, but then again she isn't wearing make up or anything, but she is a strong actress who makes her character very attractive! This adaption is wonderful!
...since it was the only Jane Austen adaptation remaining for me (I have watched every single movie adaptation made from her books). After the first 30 minutes, Root's looks didn't matter at all...I hardly gave it a thought. As the movie went on, I realized how much more superior her acting was compared to Hawkins and she was Anne for me! The entire movie, the cast, and the acting were much better in this version!!
I feel quite ashamed of myself now for having been so shallow as to initially tu
Good lord! I really really like this version!! I decided not to watch it couple months ago when I had my first glimpse of Anne in the very first 10 minutes or so of the movie. I thought her quite unattractive and old...she looked nearly forty! So I watched the 2007 version instead and although I enjoyed it, I didn't like Sally Hawkins as Anne - she had the look but her acting wasn't satisfactory. So I decided I might as well watch this one since it was the only Jane Austen movie adaption remain
i did enjoy this version, however i think i liked the 2007 one better. i felt more connected to that story. however i like the ending with them on the ship better than the ending in t he 2007 one.
ahh, thank god! unfortunately, i just finished watching the 2007 version, and was terribly upset that a bbc adaptation could ever disappoint, but This one... beautiful! so much more believable, not at all stilted or awkward except when necessary. i thought the direction of the 2007 one was just not what it should have been, and i had trouble seeing any actual chemistry there. in THIS one, you can actually see all that anne has to offer, and i love how they did the scene with his letter! lovely:)
06:52 - has anyone noticed that some of the characters in the circus are also the characters in the film. I noticed the admiral ar 06:52 ... or are my eyes deceiving me :)
It's hard to believe that the lady playing .Mrs Musgrove.... also plays 'Daisy Bucket' in 'Keeping Up Appearances' on the BBC... what a fantastic actress Judy Cornwall is... I have enjoyed this version of Persuasion very much indeed... Infact my deportment and manners are much favoured and improved..hee hee...
Mind you I do hope they were agreeable before watching... Many many thanks @mansfieldparkmovie for posting all the parts for us to enjoy.. :0)x
I love Jane Austen. This book is very different from all the others, and that's why it's my favorite. Even though Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy or Emma Woodhouse and Mr. Knightley have these classic fairy tale stories. I believe Anne and Captain Wenthworth have something more. Often I wonder if Jane Austen reader's like me will ever experience something like them. I can only hope...
Sooo cute, but... don't they look kinda... old? I mean, to me they look about 40 or something, it's just weird because most movies show them young...other than that perfect
11 dislikes?! GET OUTTA HERE! hahaha. This version is <33333333 My constant reaction to this scene is "oh my gah... how romantic.." Could it get any better? sheesh, no!
though a very artfully created film, i cannot even compare it to the later version. the old one simply does not give the emotion or create those butterflies in your stomach type of impression for love as the acting of the later adaption portrays.
@djallusha I have seen both, and have to say that the 2007 version is the one that includes more love moments. However, this version portraits the real essence of the book so well, that I have to disagree and say that this is the better.
@djallusha Well I dunno, this created more butterflies for me than the new one (although I quite liked that too) simply because of all the anticipation. The emotion is an undercurrent - I feel Anne's heartache, knowing her situation, but find it possible to admire how stoic she is, and how she has borne it. The whole movie, I feel, builds up to this very last scene, when she can finally express her feelings.
@JuuMasen Anne's 27, Frederick's some years older.. they're really not terribly young.
I love the look on Captain Harville's face when Sir Elliot says "Marry Anne? Whatever for?" Priceless!! ^_^ Wonderful ending! I know people have their favorites, but I do after seeing this version, I must say that I like BOTH versions. Then again, I've like just about every version of all the books that I have seen so far. ^_^
This is by far my favorite of Jane Austen's stories, and this version of Persuasion is the best in my opinion. I love the subtle but lasting chemistry between Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root as Captain Wentworth and Anne. Such a wonderful second chance at love story. The Captain's letter always makes me melt.
The buildup of the audience´s loathing for Elizabeth´s maltreatment of Anne throughout this film is finally vindicated in this scene. Elizabeth´s lip trembles ever so slightly as her whole face balloons with rage, jealousy and disbelief that her modest sister Anne has won the handsome, rich and loving husband - and she, Elizabeth, is left the oldest daughter, unmarried, with no foreseable prospects.
God, what a well done scene. Anne's reading of Wentworth's letter and the change in narration from him to her confirms what the viewer has seen all along - that the feelings of love long encumbered by his bitterness at her refusal of him have finally made Wentworth face the truth. Love will be denied no longer.
@Uphadis I think I wrote somewhere that the letter is not in the original ending. Jane Austen --as she was dying-- decided to revise the ending--and the letter is moving, superb, the pinnacle of her genius--and the ground of the second ending.
@Uphadis I agree!! the film sort of combines the two versions but mostly the second. The letter-(not in first version) -well you are right--it can bring you to tears.
i quite like this adaptation for its representation of Anne ...i find the newer version very annoying with Anne crying all the time looking at the camera just asking pity
It is not a matter of Anne's age. A woman of 27 in that time is like a woman of forty today. It is more her looks. JA's book does not portray Anne as a unattractive girl. I agree with what has been said......she looks more like a parlor maid than a lady.
For me, this is a perfect rendition. The book is like a script to this (a bit abridged, but not in essentials) Brilliant actors all around, it´s a treat watching this. Thanx for posting!
HAHAHAHA i love how his answer to 'whatever for' is a giant grin :)

Have you thought any further about my offer?

My offer to flatter and adore you all the days of your life.
-I haven't really had a moment, Mr. Elliot, to turn my mind to it.

I am wondering however why Captain Wentworth in the end expresses his happiness much more so than Anne does.

me encanta esta interpretación. El que hace de Captain Wentworth es tremendamente sexi... No es un rubio incipido como la mayoria de los actores.

Geez.
beatrixn 1 year ago 9
@beatrixn I agree, but she is supposed to be 27...and she looks about 40. It doesn't bother me, but understand the complaints :-)
blondecat666 1 year ago
@blondecat666 that's true, but I think her looks work in this adaptation because, well, she looks more 'old maid-y'. at 27, Anne's basically middle-aged by Regency lady standards, but that's a fact that's easily lost on modern audiences because to us 27 is young. Obviously, we do still have the old maid stigma, but it doesn't really start til much later in life. And Anne as spinster is key to the plot, and (sadly) having an older looking actress works as an instant visual cue for that.

I love this adaption with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds sooooo much!!

this version is more realistic to life not pretty and styled. like the 2007 version this si real life plain and simple
Aprostime123 1 year ago
I didn't dislike this adaptation, but since it is rather faithul to the book, the few unnecessary changes they made do bother me. And the kiss on the street is absurd, this never would have happened in those days. So if they did have to kiss for the audience's sake, they should have showed them kissing in their cabin after the wedding. ;-)

this is the best interpretation I have ever seen, and I think the closest to the book of Jane Austen as she saw the characters..they are not young and pretty, they are end twenties in their thirties, which in those days was considered "old" especially for a woman. Beautiful.. thank you!!!

QueenBoadicea 1 year ago
I'm thinking of "The Odyssey" by Homer. In it, Odysseus gambols with other women while his faithful wife Penelope holds down the fort at home, fending off the greedy suitors trying to win her, taking care of her household and protecting her son Telemachus from men who would kill him. There was a faithful woman indeed, especially when compared to her philandering husband.

But I love both movies in their different ways!
gauchatche 1 year ago 3
@gauchatche, it seems the Advent Of The Blessed Kiera Knightly provoked more than one production company to break faith with the novel-reading public during the 2000's. Whole sections of Miss Austen's books were..I blush..violated. Darcy has a spat with Liz in the pouring rain, and then lopes over the marshy tussacks to coo to her at dawn. People kiss in the most extraordinary places. You're right....a man could be prosecuted for making such sleazy advances to a chaste gel.
marginallymental 1 year ago
I have no idea why the people who scripted and directed the 20007 ITV version butchered it.....it's got nothing to do with their limited budget, I'm sure. This version is amazing.........!!! We need another adaptation of Persuasion, preferably by the same people who made BBC's North and South.....Imagine Richard Armitage as Wentworth...oooo er! ;-)

@simkunni I did that several months ago, right after i had re-read persuasion. I started this, and thought "oh amanda root isn't as pretty" and didn't finish. I'm so glad I rewatched it now! So I decided I might as well watch this one since it was the only Jane Austen movie adaption remain

ahh, thank god! unfortunately, i just finished watching the 2007 version, and was terribly upset that a bbc adaptation could ever disappoint, but This one... beautiful! so much more believable, not at all stilted or awkward except when necessary. i thought the direction of the 2007 one was just not what it should have been, and i had trouble seeing any actual chemistry there. in THIS one, you can actually see all that anne has to offer, and i love how they did the scene with his letter! lovely:)

I love Jane Austen. This book is very different from all the others, and that's why it's my favorite. Even though Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy or Emma Woodhouse and Mr. Knightley have these classic fairy tale stories. I believe Anne and Captain Wenthworth have something more. though a very artfully created film, i cannot even compare it to the later version. the old one simply does not give the emotion or create those butterflies in your stomach type of impression for love as the acting of the later adaption portrays.

@djallusha I have never agreed with anything more in my life! I love the 2007 version.

@djallusha I have seen both, and have to say that the 2007 version is the one that includes more love moments. However, this version portraits the real essence of the book so well, that I have to disagree and say that this is the better.
live4icecreamu2 1 year ago 3
@djallusha Well I dunno, this created more butterflies for me than the new one (although I quite liked that too) simply because of all the anticipation. The emotion is an undercurrent - I feel Anne's heartache, knowing her situation, but find it possible to admire how stoic she is, and how she has borne it. The whole movie, I feel, builds up to this very last scene, when she can finally express her feelings.
@JuuMasen Anne's 27, Frederick's some years older.. they're really not terribly young.

This is by far my favorite of Jane Austen's stories, and this version of Persuasion is the best in my opinion. I love the subtle but lasting chemistry between Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root as Captain Wentworth and Anne. Such a wonderful second chance at love story. The Captain's letter always makes me melt.
complexkitty 1 year ago
The buildup of the audience´s loathing for Elizabeth´s maltreatment of Anne throughout this film is finally vindicated in this scene. Elizabeth´s lip trembles ever so slightly as her whole face balloons with rage, jealousy and disbelief that her modest sister Anne has won the handsome, rich and loving husband - and she, Elizabeth, is left the oldest daughter, unmarried, with no foreseable prospects.
mannixisle 1 year ago
God, what a well done scene. Anne's reading of Wentworth's letter and the change in narration from him to her confirms what the viewer has seen all along - that the feelings of love long encumbered by his bitterness at her refusal of him have finally made Wentworth face the truth. Love will be denied no longer.

@Uphadis I think I wrote somewhere that the letter is not in the original ending. Jane Austen --as she was dying-- decided to revise the ending--and the letter is moving, superb, the pinnacle of her genius--and the ground of the second ending.

vivascargill 1 year ago
It is not a matter of Anne's age. A woman of 27 in that time is like a woman of forty today. It is more her looks. JA's book does not portray Anne as a unattractive girl. I agree with what has been said......she looks more like a parlor maid than a lady.
