" made the >dumb< understand ". The lyric isnt a fit on this. Love the song over all. Prince absolutely was a musical monster 84-88 don't care much about anything before & after that time span.
i've read hello,it seems prince doesn't want fame ,he was famous sp he could've used it to help people.he was selfish.it seems hypocritical after he sang ; baby,i'm a star'. am i wrong and he doesn't like publicity but realises he must play up to the media to get his songs out.
@gailmckennag Ah it's a tough world out there. :) Isn't Hello one of those gossip magazines that write that Oprah is getting married and such? Take it all with a grain of salt...
Classic Prince song that should never be forgotten. I remember when my parents would play the original cassette tape as we traveled in our station wagon. Why dont radio stations play this song nowadays along with all the other songs that were on the USA for Africa album?
@MESchiffer4 DEAR FRIEND: I STILL GOT THE CASSETTE WITH THIS NICE SONG. I REMEMBER THOSE DAYS IN THE 80s AND IS WONDERFUL TO GO BACK IN THE PAST. VERY VERY VERY VERY BEAUTIFUL SONG. LOVE, PEACE AND FAITH ON JESUSCHRIST!
I remember seeing the video at a friend's house, his dad gave a BBQ and us kids were watching the USA for Africa concert. When prince came on someone turn on the stereo receiver and we could hear it on the big speakers it was real quiet in that room. I have seen that vid posted here and other spots, awesome.
I remember my dad buying this record in 1985 and me playing this song so much I put scratches on the vinyl track. Wish they had this version on iTunes instead of that lull-me-to-sleep version they've got.
@eefjeeitje If it's true, it wouldn't be the first time. He was sued by an Italian songwriter for stealing the chorus of his song and using it on The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.
MTV did a one-time airing of Prince's video for this, as I recall it the video was done in amber lighting and shadows, with Prince on acoustic guitar. The pace of the song was slower than the version playing here, which seems a little sped up. It was a slightly more somber song, basically, not an upbeat tempo. I'm sure if somebody does voice harmonics and register correction they could confirm this fact against Prince's other work.
@lavideomania I just found that video on Betamax (NTSC) in my collection. would love to put it on the web 4 others to see butttttt the Betamax has died.... (it was also aired during the live aid show)
This is a cool version, Prince was cool for contributing a song to the ablum, since he didn't feel comfortable singing with everybody else on We are The World. This is a cool song, but I think I like the slower version, but I still like this one!! Thanks for posting!
@paducahgirl It makes you wish Prince did his own "We Are the World" type song back then with some of the more edgier acts of the mid 80's. The guy was such a great songwriter/performer.
The bit about "and the dumb understand" is risible. In proper context, which I know is irrelevant to many, Jesus make the dumb speak, since dumb meant mute, not stupid.
@catchersmitt0 Shut the fuck up. No one needs you to explain or expound. We just want to enjoy the music. Too bad your ass isn't dumb and fingerless. Maybe we wouldn't be subjected to your unsolicited analysis.
This version have a much faster tempo versus the other version. Although I admire and appreciate both.....I must admit that the live version reigns supreme.
@purplexxe8 you can hear the harmony betweeen lisa, wendy, and prince's voice better on the other verison on the part "4 the tears of ur eyes, the tears of sarrow".
@ pearlplayah - i couldn't agree with you more. Prince was, is and will always be the best. PERIOD
@ raswakeup - you are so full of shit. There's lots of original stuff the man has done in the last 20 years. Why must everything be like fucking Sign O The Times? Kick rocks man.
@pearlplayah And "The Devil is a lie". ... How quickly they forget... Prince is amazing, indeed (no debating it). But the "Greatest"?? ....Dream on; Aerosmith...
@pearlplayah YEAHHH!!! 4 ME PRINCE IS THE GREATEST PRODIGY IN ROCK HISTORY!!! 33 YEARS OF WONDERFUL MUSIC: MORE THAN 60 ALBUMS AND MANY, MANY, MANY AWARDS INCLUDING 1 OSCAR, 7 GRAMMYS, 1 GOLDEN GLOBE, ETC
The thing I love about Cing Prince live is that he frequently does songs live with totally different arrangements than on the albums. The thing that frustrates me is that sooo many of his songs R amazing & would B smash hits as rock/pop songs, but the funk/soul arrangements overpower the songs sometimes.....
Good song shame Prince has done NOTHING new or original for 20 years!!!! Now does same old tedious tired funk crap as on 3121, etc. What happened? He lose his majic mojo or something. His last great album was Sign oof the Times almost 25 years ago!!!!!!!
@raswakeup I gotta agree & disagree with U...I'm just as pissed as any1 about the "tired funk rut" he seems 2 always fall back in2, but he's never stopped writing brilliant songs--4 some reason, he seems 2 prefer producing his albums & arranging the music 2 showcase the funk elements, but he'll usually throw in 1 str8 rock song. I wish he'd go back & re-record/rearrange all his albums as rock albums...That would b slammin!!!
Urlovelyman still stands by the lyrics to this song and has never been on more stable theological ground! The meek SHALL inherit the earth and Jesus is our King and redeemer, He did die 4 the tears in ur eyes.....
A time when he was on more stable theological ground. A beautiful song. The video of this with Wendy and Lisa is gorgeous, they had a unique chemisry with him as the revolution. Personally, I don't think he has ever since reached that, simply beautiful synergy. Go well people...........
If by "B-Side" you mean the version played during the Live Aid telecast - just Wendy, Lisa & Prince - then yes, that version is far superior. Slower, spacier, more coherent instrumentally, and with a better vocal performance by all concerned. You can pick it up on I-Tunes (it's labeled "4 The Tears In Your Eyes (Live)"...
How come Priss didn't have this blocked like most of his songs? He did not sing on "We Are The World", but did contribute this song to the album. He is also the world.
so powerful!!! the artist, prince, is the greatest artist of ALL time. no one can beat him.

The video was shown once during the live aid concert as a one off.
As far as i know its never been on air again.
On video it's a bit slower, and in black and white.
Explanation on how and what happened during WATW recording is in the song "Hello"
