ok heres what my dreamcast does. evry once in a while it just stops reading disks and if i just open it up blow on the laser and move it all the way up it works perfectly agian and somtimes just removing the modem will make it somewhat work like it will work but the load times are twice as long as normal and it will randomly freeze for a few seconds
ps i havnt moded my dreamcast in any way shape or form
@roosteemon I found the real problem. The flimsy lid switch fails on all these machines. Your machine is thinking the lid is open or semi-open. It happens while loading a disk and the load fails. I found keeping the lids open 100% of the time while not in use relaxes the pressure on the switch so it keeps working. Or you can open up your DC and bypass the lid switch.
I tried it and it somewhat worked. It made it recognize that the discs were there, and that they were Dreamcast discs, but it would stay in the "SEGA" copyright screen. I tried tweaking it again, and after the sega copyright, it went to a black, buzzing screen with no sound. Tweaked again, didn't work, so I kept at it and found the minimum and maximum it reads at, but I can't get past the black screen. It reads CDs though, and both games are pretty scratched, but not horribly. Is it the games?
@LurchenGamer Could be a bad pressed game as a lot of early Dreamcast games had bad presses nothing that can be done its just pot luck its something sega did fix early on do later games are fine, I have a brand new Chu Chu rocked that was sealed and the disk had no scratches on but wouldn't boot in 3 Dreamcasts I tested it with.
Thanks for the tip! Just about died today when my Dreamcast stopped reading disc, but this fixed it up real quick..and on a side note, I literally twisted it a hair because that's about all it would budge
thank you so much your tip on adjusting the screw worked and i don't even think i moved the screw but once i turned on the console it worked awesome thanks again
This might work for a couple minutes and then stop reading some games again or it will only read a few more games but be temperamental with others. I recommend just downloading backups and playing them as backup copies. The DC reads Cd-rs better then Gd-rs. I had this problem with my last DC so i got another one. It worked fine for a few months and now i'm having the same issue again. I'm gonna stick to backups. Anyone who is anti emu should be kicked in the face in the name of the Dreamcast!
@TheUnbiasedGamer Um you do no that it is CD-R's that damage the dreamcast laser because GD-ROM data is placed different to that on a CD-R so the dreamcast is put under more stress when playing backups thats the main reason for burning at slow speeds like 2 or 4x to try and minimize data scattering on the disk so that the drive dose not have to work as hard.
@arranmc182 I've never used a cd-r in my Dreamcast and seeing as it already stopped reading games and it reads copies I can either buy another Dreamcast which could also fail or just burn games to prolong the usefulness of my Dreamcast i have now. Also if you get uncompressed files the games don't strain like that. Of course that is if you can find those files.
awesome. i worked this one out for myself. did the same to my pals ps2 and they were amazed!good to c someone showing how its done in such a simple way. mega console, also cd players benefit from same fix when they dont read cds. worth knowing. respect!
When I put a disc in my Dreamcast it says please insert a disc. How do I fix this? does this video apply to my problem? The consloe doesnt say ERROR it just says "please insert a disc" Would this video help me fix my problem? plz someone help!
My Dreamcast hasn't played a disk in about a year, and is over 10 years old. It wouldn't get past the main menu, but I turned that little screw like this video shows a quarter of the way counter clockwise, and it now works perfectly. Thanks a ton, time for some Sonic Adventure hah.
I found its alot easier to burn fresh backups onto new , good branded cd's and 1: The laser has less strain, and 2: you'll find it'll read alot better. Main reason the dreamcast stops reading the disks, is because of scratches and damage, aswell as wear and tear and the general oldness of the disks. I still use my dreamcast now, using memorex cd-r's I got 3 dreamcasts that work perfectly.
@ROOKTABULA Don't put pressure on the case, you'll just damage it further. If it's only one disk, then it's more than likely the disk, and nothing to do with the case. So therefore, just download a backup of the game you have, and burn it using Disk Juggler to a normal cd-r. You shouldn't have any further problems, if you do contact me and i'll help you. I had a problem years ago with an old dreamcast, the disk stopped spinning when I closed the lid. Now i realise it was easily fixable :S
Wasn't putting enuff to do damage actually. And it was all discs-all my originals and some cd-r discs.
Weird thing: Once I put lithium grease on the sled rails, it worked tits!
Which is great, but I'll be DAMNED if I can explain why having the upper half of the case removed, or pushing on lid, would make a diff for lack of lube!
Wish I'd noticed that sooner!
Gave the laser a 1/8 turn (Clockwise to increase intensity) and that made it good as new.
@ROOKTABULA Very strange lol, but giving it a bit more power the laser (turning it) and greesing the rail probably allowed it to move alot more freely, maybe the pressure on the lid eased the rail a bit hence why it worked when you put pressure on it. Anyways glad its working now :) long live the dreamcast! \o/
@havindatpaper Take the dreamcast apart and take the lid off, look what happens when you close the lid. You will notice that it's on a cog type mech (not looked at it deeply myself) but I think that when the lid closes, it puts pressure onto a button. It's just the button that needs pressing to make it spin, for instance the playstation had one inside you could just press. Its the same I think, just try and re-calibrate the lid or stick the button down with something inside the console.
ok guys i have a question i recently got a over clocked dream cast of ebay pretty cheap it works fin but when its in over clocked mode it corups the VM data but only when its over clocked
@zachthezombie Why would you need the dreamcast overclocked? It's not like a PC where you can actually push it harder by doing so. Keep it in the stock settings. Overcloacking is pointless on a console. Especially older ones like Dreamcast.
@zachthezombie But the games are made with the sstem specs in mind. So, they already run at a fairly high FPS. If you have frame rate issues on games that are not poorlly made ones, it's a sign the Dreamcast is on it's way out. Plus, the only way to overclock this thing is to add a couple chips to bypass the BIOS. Max gain on such slow hardware, maybe 5%. Since it normally pumps out about 35fps, you will gain maybe 2-3gps. Not worth the time and effort. Again, save overclocking for PC's
@zachthezombie I looked into the overclocking before on google, If I remember correctly because the systems overclocked, the vmu's have problems and need to be overclocked too to work properly. - Personally overclocking a dreamcast is a bad idea, will wear the console out alot faster. And wont actually help the gameplay much if at all.
Here is an odd one for you. I only have issues playing Shenmue. I've tried two different copies, both not working. If I let the console sit untouched, then fire it up it will get through the opening movie. Then it locks up loadign the first gameplay bit or shortly after. I can hear the disk drive moving around searching. Restart and it wont get past the SEGA logo. Again making the "searching" sound. If I let it sit for an hour, it works up to the lock up point. Any idea?
@alexfart67 I've gotten it to where it will play for about 15-10 min and then locks up at the next load screen. No idea why but it's like clock work. As soon as I hit 15 min in, the nexet area I enter it will most likely lock up. Very strange.
I have the exact same problem. I burned a copy of the first disc, and thankfully the other three worked fine. I think that the first shipment of Shenmue must have been pressed incorrectly, because my disc didn't have any scratches when I got it. Just bad luck, I guess.
SOunds like you've got a blown fuse. Check out Lukemorse1 here on youtube. Go to his page and in the search bar type dreamcast repair and that should take you to a video that shows you how to fix your problem. Hope that helps.
@reload95 I take it you mean the laser if so cotton bud/ swab and rubbing alcohol and be very careful use one end to dip in the alcohol then the other side to dry off
i dont kno if im turning the dial thing or w/e its called im about to test it but i doubt it will work... i dont know if this is even my problem because i think the thing that spins the disk isnt moving ...
My Dreamcast dident read any discs. Tryed that thing u told and it just worked, right away!!! It fealt like my DC was like new! I finaly can play Shenmue 1 and all the other stuff i got and i got alot for it YEY! THX MAN!!!!!!!!
I was just about to give up on my DC when I thought "maybe someone knows how to fix one". Thank you my friend, you just saved one of my favorite things in the world, it works like a charm now!
my dc boot up for 10 seconds and shut down once it starts i put a cd which do not turn at all any help for making it work again would be really appreciate thanks!!
this has helped my dreamcast last a lot longer! i think i ruined my old ps2 by a similar method, but i plan to buy backup consoles for both eventually. I want to be able to play these things when im wrinkly. :)
The problem i'm having is that its only loading some games, it'll load house of the dead 2 fine ( i have 2 copies and they both work) I also have sonic adventure, virtua tenis and a load of other games an none of these load) Sonic adventure has loaded a couple of times when I've tried it over and over and over like 15+ times and then normally it'll crash somewhere in the first level. Can anyone give me a hand with this? Btw house of the dead runs fine throughout and never crashes.
hi, firstly, this is a great video! but can u help me please!! i took my dreamcast from czech republic back to england in the suitcase, but it stopped working ., basically right, when u put a CD in, the disc doesnt spin anymore, even when u try to move it with ur hand, like it sort of stiff.... do u know why this is happened or what i can do to rectify it!??? ? u seem to be a clever engineer!! please let me know, thanks
@Zerowii64: You can not even comprehend how hard that made me laugh just now. I'm like doubled over cracking up! And every time I imagine somebody trying to play the dc with this big hairy toe on the power button it starts me up again. Thank you!
i really need help. i have the original shenmue game 4 the dreamcast and for some reason disc 2 wont load it has no scratches and disc 1 3 and 4 work but wen i put the 2nd one in it always reads and shows the sega corp logo then goes bak to the home menu I REALLY NEED HELP!!!
hahhaha omg im a fucking idiot.. haha ok.. so what if i broke it while attempting to turn it? .. i mean.. it broke partially but not all.. infact i was able to turn it counter clockwise.. but i wonder if this will bring me a bigger problem..
I am having the SAME goddamn problem, it boots to the loading screen, where it says Sega in blue letters.. then goes back to the DC menu... but it reads the music portion perfectly fine. And I can play my other games just fine...
Hey, did you ever figure it out? My Shenmue is doing the same thing. Disk is good, but it only loads to the loading screen. Yet othger games work fine..
Gahhh, I have this exact same problem! The first time I inserted the disc however, I managed to play it until it was time to exit Ryo's house, but it was taking in upwards of 10 minutes to load so I turned off my console.
Hey, can I ask if this is a symptom of the disk read error? My Dreamcast rattles when it tries to play a disk, if this is what is wrong with it, would your guide help?
hey. excellent, excellent work. by turning the dial clockwise I am able to get past the Dreamcast loading screen and onto the primary screen for the game...but that's it, any suggestions, or should I just keep fiddling with it?
its just perfectly worked, i like your instructions, i used to do that but i removed the ribbon, this is why i damaged some and forced to replace them, with your tutorial i will never have to replace another ribbon anymore, thanks a lot......
Thanks for the video. I accidentally turned the screw all the way clockwise because I read another tutorial that wasn't very clear. So now, I have to start all the way at maximum...and try to slow it down a bit. The laser lens itself seems a bit wobbly and moves in random directions sometimes. Anyways, hopefully this will cure it.
lol steven3x u can watch the videos as meny times as u like im not gunna take them down only way they will come down is if i make better ones or youtube block me ok
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!!!Shemue is the only game that does this for me on 2 separate systems and both Shemue games. did you find anything? thank you!!
Hey, let me know if you figured it out or if this trick works, my dreamcast will not load shenmue either, only to the loading screen, yet other games play fine.
I find that GD-Roms are not the best disks if you have something like a disk doctor you know the disk cleaning tools try that or if your local games store offers a disk repair services try that out but it could be the fact that your laser is on its way out on your dreamcast
Just one question. When you refer to the direction the dial must be turned, do you mean with the front of the console facing you (pad ports)?, or the other way around?.
im on my second one just because i sold my first one to my friend and he still has it and it works and i have mine and it still works u just have to look after the console and it will last years
Thankyou so much for this. I got my dreamcast working again today thanks to this. Very easy to do and your explanation was perfect. Now, back to Soul Calibur!
0uas its not tolate to own another dreamcast and the games are cheap or you can play CD-r backups on the system with no mod chip £30 on ebay in the UK if you look round can normaly get you a Dreamcast with 4 controllers some memory cards and about 5/6 games some times you will get better bargins but make sure you get the S-Vide or RGB cable
so ,before you start insulting me again & throwing your toys out of your pram cos i dont 100% agree with your D.i.Y repair instructions ,what size screw driver should be used? plus is it a phillips or flat head? also that little "dial" you turn or did you say diode? (cant tell cos of your accent,)is actually the pedometer...btw people when you turn over the laser eye holder be very carefull not to pull out the ribbon connector as it can just slip out..
paulspydar if fixed over 100 dreamcast and this has all ways worked and i wouldn't have a go ot you fore not liking the way i do it i said dial btw and i tend to use a small flat head to turn it but long nose pliers can be used and i didn't know it was called pedometer and the ribbon cable will only come out if u dont move the laser to the back of the drive thanks for the comment
no problem mate , i do like your vids btw ,i just tried to be helpfull by adding a tip as people who fix consoles etc tend to forget the obvious,I had a ribbon slip out on me and it was a big pain getting it back in! also I cant seem to find a tool small enough that fits the dial(pedometer) well enough to turn it acuratly ,do you grip it on the outside or slot in the middle? I have manafed to alter the speed but its very hit an miss, no hard feelings , Baco
Zakaroony why did you even post a comment of all your going to do take the piss take it you have never owned a Dreamcast or that comment would not have been said
You guys have helped fix my boyfriend's Sega Dreamcast, and now he's playing it all night! xD
Thank you for making him happy by teaching us all how to fix that darn error on such an underestimated game system!

@roosteemon I found the real problem. The flimsy lid switch fails on all these machines. Your machine is thinking the lid is open or semi-open. It happens while loading a disk and the load fails. @tehNach0 Or could it be that the laser's almost dead and can only read CD-ROM and not GD-ROM? I wish I had a clean new game to test it with.

so is this permanent?

@jeremie14loo No it is not if you are having to do this then the laser is getting weak and might stop working at any time

SOunds like you've got a blown fuse. Check out Lukemorse1 here on youtube. Go to his page and in the search bar type dreamcast repair and that should take you to a video that shows you how to fix your problem. Hope that helps.

iorel1982 2 years ago

1.cry and complain
2.watch some tutorials you dont even understand
3. take it to a game store and get it fixed!

@NCWEntertainment most places will not fix any console pre PS2 now unless they happen to be able to get the parts then they will just rip you off

also Where Can I get Laser parts for it?
oujisan 2 years ago
The problem i'm having is that its only loading some games, it'll load house of the dead 2 fine ( i have 2 copies and they both work) I also have sonic adventure, virtua tenis and a load of other games an none of these load) Sonic adventure has loaded a couple of times when I've tried it over and over and over like 15+ times and then normally it'll crash somewhere in the first level. Can anyone give me a hand with this? Btw house of the dead runs fine throughout and never crashes.

reactor4music 3 years ago
I broke mine by gripping the screw too hard with pliers, still turned it enough to make it work though
hokman1 3 years ago
Me too , it's hard to find a screw driver the right size and i keep all sorts including a watch makers set.
lordsofkoble 3 years ago
hey me dreamcast is only reading music cds and not game cds can sum 1 give me advice or tell me how to fix it
panjr0809 3 years ago
ADVICE:
Play it upside down. My Dreamcast now reads every single disk perfectly because I play it upside down. Try it.
LennyTheLeper 3 years ago
that's gay, dc is designed to be played sitting up, i don't mind tilting ps1/2
hokman1 3 years ago
Do you know between how many Ohms is the laser set at?
kohan69 3 years ago
my shenmue only loads upto the loading screen... ive been fiddling around it for a while and still no luck. anything can help, thanks.
TopHat 3 years ago
Mine does the same...but it plays the rest of my disks...I think it has something to do witht he laser mechanism.
Steelix123 3 years ago
I am having the SAME goddamn problem, it boots to the loading screen, where it says Sega in blue letters.. then goes back to the DC menu... but it reads the music portion perfectly fine. And I can play my other games just fine...
turducken321 2 years ago
Hey, did you ever figure it out? My Shenmue is doing the same thing. Disk is good, but it only loads to the loading screen. Yet othger games work fine..
Let me know, thakns
turducken321 2 years ago
Gahhh, I have this exact same problem! The first time I inserted the disc however, I managed to play it until it was time to exit Ryo's house, but it was taking in upwards of 10 minutes to load so I turned off my console.
Volkolak 2 years ago
some game stores chuckled when i asked for help on getting dreamcast fixed... thats how ancient it is..it didnt work 4 10 years...yay memories!
bloodydragon 3 years ago
Hey, can I ask if this is a symptom of the disk read error? My Dreamcast rattles when it tries to play a disk, if this is what is wrong with it, would your guide help?
xela12345 3 years ago 2
hey. excellent, excellent work. by turning the dial clockwise I am able to get past the Dreamcast loading screen and onto the primary screen for the game...but that's it, any suggestions, or should I just keep fiddling with it?
atranos 3 years ago
I tried to turn mine and it wont turn..what are u using to turn it?
ethemuss 3 years ago
hey, great video! very helpful... got any tips or a video tutorial on how to fix busted up dreamcast controller ports???
zomboy656 3 years ago
its just perfectly worked, i like your instructions, i used to do that but i removed the ribbon, this is why i damaged some and forced to replace them, with your tutorial i will never have to replace another ribbon anymore, thanks a lot......
KONGNO2000 3 years ago
Thanks for the video. I accidentally turned the screw all the way clockwise because I read another tutorial that wasn't very clear. So now, I have to start all the way at maximum...and try to slow it down a bit. The laser lens itself seems a bit wobbly and moves in random directions sometimes. Anyways, hopefully this will cure it.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!!!Shemue is the only game that does this for me on 2 separate systems and both Shemue games. did you find anything? thank you!!
rx321j 3 years ago
Hey, let me know if you figured it out or if this trick works, my dreamcast will not load shenmue either, only to the loading screen, yet other games play fine.
turducken321 2 years ago
I find that GD-Roms are not the best disks if you have something like a disk doctor you know the disk cleaning tools try that or if your local games store offers a disk repair services try that out but it could be the fact that your laser is on its way out on your dreamcast
arranmc182 2 years ago
Just one question. When you refer to the direction the dial must be turned, do you mean with the front of the console facing you (pad ports)?, or the other way around?.
linkyshinks 3 years ago
I'm on my third Dreamcast now. Great console but built like shit
SegaNextGen 3 years ago
im on my second one just because i sold my first one to my friend and he still has it and it works and i have mine and it still works u just have to look after the console and it will last years
arranmc182 3 years ago
Thankyou so much for this. I got my dreamcast working again today thanks to this. Very easy to do and your explanation was perfect. Now, back to Soul Calibur!
solidsnake784 3 years ago
I wish I would of knew about this about 6 years ago, I had at least 50 games. Mostly fighters too.
0uas 3 years ago
0uas its not tolate to own another dreamcast and the games are cheap or you can play CD-r backups on the system with no mod chip £30 on ebay in the UK if you look round can normaly get you a Dreamcast with 4 controllers some memory cards and about 5/6 games some times you will get better bargins but make sure you get the S-Vide or RGB cable
arranmc182 3 years ago
so ,before you start insulting me again & throwing your toys out of your pram cos i dont 100% agree with your D.i.Y repair instructions ,what size screw driver should be used? plus is it a phillips or flat head? also that little "dial" you turn or did you say diode? (cant tell cos of your accent,)is actually the pedometer...btw people when you turn over the laser eye holder be very carefull not to pull out the ribbon connector as it can just slip out..
paulspydar 3 years ago
paulspydar if fixed over 100 dreamcast and this has all ways worked and i wouldn't have a go ot you fore not liking the way i do it i said dial btw and i tend to use a small flat head to turn it but long nose pliers can be used and i didn't know it was called pedometer and the ribbon cable will only come out if u dont move the laser to the back of the drive thanks for the comment
arranmc182 3 years ago
no problem mate , i do like your vids btw ,i just tried to be helpfull by adding a tip as people who fix consoles etc tend to forget the obvious,I had a ribbon slip out on me and it was a big pain getting it back in! also I cant seem to find a tool small enough that fits the dial(pedometer) well enough to turn it acuratly ,do you grip it on the outside or slot in the middle? I have manafed to alter the speed but its very hit an miss, no hard feelings , Baco
