  • Karen Walker !

  • As a rabid immortalitist, I still think de Gray would be more...successful, if he looked less mental. And the ums are starting to get right up my left nostril.

  • I'm not a biologist, but my only fear is that De Grey puts too much emphasis on what is "inevitable" and "likely"

Advancement does not just drop in our laps. It takes place when people really strive to get it done. The Pyramids, the space programs, human genome project, etc. We have to make people strive for curing aging!

  • @Nightmonkey17 If you were wrking for something that you had a passion for and were presenting it to investors and leaderships you wouldnt emphasize the hard work part of your future research

  • Interesting ideas, shame he has the look of an alcoholic. A functional alcoholic, but an alcoholic none the less...

  • beer?

  • He just wants to have an infinitely long beard.

  • i hope he dusnt die in a car crash or something then we really will be fucked

  • I love Aubrey... he is totally at the forefront of his field... although, I do think that some show or youtube skit should poke fun at him alittle.. nothing too outrageous, just get somebody to speak in his accent with a lisp... and just say what he is talking about in this video... Nothing more than that, and the dialogue will make it funny as hell...

  • Certainly the smartest thing I've ever heard from a guy with a beer in his hand.

  • Identify. Cleanup. Repair. and/or Renew.

  • They were right. Jesus has indeed returned.

  • @Llortsaccount You should now what exactly are you in?

  • @Llortsaccount Well I actually work for the seasteading institute as an ambassador for them. Really this is what it's all about. Although it'll probably all begin with factories escaping minimum wage laws for immigrants who couldn't get visas. We'll move into growing algae for energy and domesticating animals. With that crops will be grown on seasteads in the ocean. Than you can have lower levels. Seasteading can make the earth hold literally a hundred billion people.

  • @Llortsaccount I'm assuming you've looked at Bangladesh and how they use to have 7 children per household and now it's 2.7? Also if overpopulation ever became a real issue "it wont" than it's time for Patri Friedman and the seasteading institute. 73% of the worlds unused space will be used to build cities and grow crops on.

  • genious

  • i wish aubrey to sucseed in his career his the best scientist known to man god bless aubrey de grey

  • 31:32 made me cringe.

Come on Aubrey, don't drink on the job..

  • Is that grey hair on Aubrey de Grey's long mane? Is he aging? Ummm . . .

  • I don't know, but i think Aubrey forgets about one important thing: once we're close to doing all this or once all people are really aware of it, there'll be a race, one hell of a lot of attention to this issue as never before. Much more scientists will get envolved, much more money will be dedicated to it, and the PUBLIC EYE will be starving for answers. Hence, after the first therapies, we might witness an even faster progress that the one he's talking about....

    LONG LIVE THE MICE!!

  • @TheDarkFenix Well to that idea it's really something I believe De Grey and others recognize, but it's something they simply cannot count on.

  • Is it just me, is it a coincidence, or he happens to look a lot like jesus christ???

  • Sounds like fun!!!!!!!!!

  • This is just too serious, this man should get all the money he needs, we spend so much on stupid things, like war. If we continue to take death for granted, it's gonna delay a possible solution even more. We must hurry, this is definately the most important issue for humanity, actually it's always been. I mean, if death dies, all other things can wait....

  • From what i understand, the only question that there is, according to Aubrey, is wether or not we're gonna make it, middle aged people. I'm 30 now, maybe i'll make it. The way he puts it, seems that it's obvious and not a question at all that my 2 year old daughter will DEFINATELY live up to a couple of thousand. A hundred years from now, this will be simple, easy to do, trivial. Maybe i won't make it, but the thought that we'll eventually be able to do it is already amazing.

    LONG LIVE THE MICE

  • @TheDarkFenix

You're 30 now, the nanotech golden age is 40 years away so, you might just make it if you can live to 70.

Go on a calorie controlled diet - 2,500 calories per day, 1 meal per day - also take the vitamin supplements used by Ray Kurzweil, almost all of whom are named in one of his books. Using these methods and regular exercise I don't see why you wouldn't live until 90 or 100.

I'm lucky, my gene history indicates long life. :D

  • @OntDinRS how old are you?

  • @joeyabbs87

    18, and yourself?

  • @OntDinRS im 23, i was also curious about your gene history? i personally have the same feeling about my gene history. for example i think that at least 4 out of my 8 great grandparents lived into their 90s which is quite good for that period of time (approx 1880 - 1970). is this a similar idea to which you are basing your own potential natural longevity?

  • @joeyabbs87

Yes I base my potential natural longevity on My grandmother's parents (both died in their 90s) and my grandfather's parents - 90 and 78 - typically 70-90 are my great grandparents on my mother's side, I can't remember their ages offhandedly.

My grandfather is still alive now at 89 and his parents live until 66 and 72, my grandmother died at 64 and my great grandmother died at 101, my great grandfather died in ww2 as a pilot so I'm unaware of the age he may have lived to.

  • @OntDinRS

I worded that poorly in a failed attempt to keep information to one comment - the second time I mention the word "grandfather" I am referring to my fathers parents as my mother's parents are still alive at 66 and 69.

  • The only absolute left... is now taxes... If only he could take care of that one...

  • Longevity escape velocity isn't unique to this form of treatment. The difference here I guess is that it's at least theoretically reachable with this method.

Also, I think he shouldn't rule out the possibility of combining this with aspects of other forms for treatment. Eg. treating alzeimers might be easier if the rest of the patients system is healthier due to this method.

  • Honestly, I'm not seeing the difference between LEV and immortality. What he explains, is kinda that LEV is NOT "invincibility". But I'm guessing the method won't be so effective that it simply eliminates aging, but considerably reducing it. I'm sure he realizes that.

  • Aubrey de Grey is a creative genius.

  • beerd

  • Perhaps death is just a self fulfilling prophesy. As far as I know meat kills and fruit and vegatables promote a good and healthy metabolism. Experimenting on defencless animals in a lab is pointless and cruel. Veganism is the key to the New Age.

  • I've been watching this for a while now, and I just realized something. Is he holding a beer? lol

  • didnt aubrey work as a computer technician at cambridge?

  • Wow science IS aweeeesoooomeeee!

I wish they taught about the cool things you could do with science in school, rather than analysing basic leaf cells and drawing boring conclusions with no end result in mind...

  • @elczrilo i felt the same thing!!!!

  • @elczrilo we didn't know these things when you were in school, that's the reason why you weren't taught it... However there is no reason why the students in public school now aren't learning it...

Oh... Right... It's because public schools can only afford 10 year old biology books.

  • 20th century is the last century of the human condition

  • U can't make a needle secterian. Shame for the jewish. Aging has been already overcome, its' the rna and cell division, u're again represented with fake mask to work on. And of course important data are removed from the genome project. But considering the black projects, those might have cracked it even earlier, I'd say in the ninties. Since aids is man made they let it in the nineties, and it's very close to breaking the aging issue. Enjoy the fiasco :D. Soooo fake. Shits. Liers. Deceived many.

  • @SomeUser9753

    your post is just silly!

    you're a silly man!

  • @n1bigdaddy U'r silly.

  • @SomeUser9753

    thank you!

I try really hard and it's always nice when someone recognizes my efforts and compliments me on it!

  • @n1bigdaddy u think that beer holding pervert can stop aging ? Do u believe it should be stopped at all ?

And do you think we should go with this materialistic approach stopping AGGING ? It's aging it's not so material I guess. This is lame, we must take down this wholw shit. I'm gonna enjoy 2012 when G-d fuck them up, cause they think it will be good , it's hell coming for them.

  • @SomeUser9753

    haha you're hilarious!

I can't make sense of about half of what you write.

It feels like I'm communicating with a half retarded child of some hillbilly named Billy Large.

  • at the risk to sound insulting wich I realy don't mean to do, I believe it would be beneficial for him to get some decent dental care

  • If I was working on the most important issue known to man/woman, aside from cryogenics. I would have to odd beer as well :-)

  • Smrndoff. Many other scientists have been ridiculed by biologists -Charles Darwin was heavily criticized. Just the basic premise that not very much is spent on this type of research is sad. But at the same time eye opening. I have come to many similar conclusions as Aubrey just doing basic longevity research. There is nothing in the least bit that is off the wall about his ideas -the fact that he is ambitious enough to pursue this is very positive. The science is very near to seeing some 130 y

  • holy crap @ beard. Viking King.

  • unc0nnected shut the fuck up you ponce.

  • Jesus, you want me to take you seriously or even pay attention when you are gulping down beer like a primate with a microphone right next to your mouth so that we can hear every decibel of it? I would be very doubtful if TED would have put this man on stage if they would have seen a talk like this first.

  • @unc0nnected who gives a shit if the guy is drinking a beer.

  • @unc0nnected you sir, are a guy with a lot of prejudices. What does the fact that his drinking beer have anything to do with the talk he gives? Does it say anything about his arguments? Does the fact that he drinks beer makes his arguments about pro-longing life invalid? Have you ever gave a talk? Have you ever gulp water during that talk? Well, it's the same thing, and we should steer away from people like you who are such judgmental without even having a good reason for it.

  • @unc0nnected who cares you idiot

  • I wanna go to conventions where I can lecture with beer in hand!

  • Nice Speach, there is one case i heard of where damage was repaired, actually it is the only documented hiv cured patient. the damage was an impaired immune system, so the patient had the luck and was given a new immune system (bone marrow transplant with an hiv resisten system) the effect was a healthy cured person.

So if this approach can cure hiv

    what else can we achieve?

By the way i would be interested in doing research in this area, replacing the immunse system with stemcell therapy.

  • I love watching this guy, would be awesome if his mission comes to fruition. One of the most entertaining scientists to watch. Ahhh to be alive 500 years and enjoy all the great beers~~~~~

  • I'm utterly amazed that people didn't walk out of this bullshit fantasy ''lecture'' by this obvious charlatan. In the UK he is ridiculed by respectable biologists.

  • @smrndoff If You feel this is all fantasy bullshit (very blanket statement) and he is not a respectable biologist, then could You enlighten us as to what is "not" bullshit and what IS "respectable", or are You going off the opinions of others without much grounds for Your own opinion, can You even spot "bullshit" in this area? I mean if Your gonna talk shit about someone can You back up why You think that in the first place? I'm genuinely asking You, show me the real deal.

  • @smrndoff I'm utterly amazed Ur "not" into listening 2this lecture, Are U interested in Life extension, or Biology? Even if this was bullshit he's an entertaining guy 2watch, if U don't like something why would U spend a whole hour. He admits numerous times how "we" are all quite ignorant of metabolism in general, and freely admits his own lack of knowledge, doesn't sound like a "know it all" or a "charlatan" he sounds like a very honest & self critical person. Did You even watch?

  • @Myflesh101 I spent a whole hour waiting for him to say something vaguely credible. It was nothing but a wish list with nonsensical graphs about escape velocities. He didn't propose a single idea of how to actually achieve his preposterous claims. Hey, wouldn't it be great to live long? yeah. Well I think we can manage it. Oooh Yeah, I need research funds. Oh Because it really could happen. Wooooh Yes, because aging sucks Yeah Cells get damaged. Mmm I can repair them. OH? But I need cash. zzz
  • @smrndoff Thank You much for being more specific, helps me appreciate where Your coming from:)

  • @smrndoff What are your preferred leading scientists in the area of Longevity research? I'm very interested, any sites You'd recommend?

  • @smrndoff Francis Crick deduced the double-helix structure of DNA while on LSD. How respectable is that?

  • @guysmy well J Craig Venter never thought abut being a biologist until the Vietnam War ended and he flunked High School. But once he went to be a corpse man and a student at a Community College and a PhD of UCSD he became to most respected biologists of the last 10 years. I noticed the most respected scientists we hear today came from backgrounds you never thought of.

  • @guysmy Damn, I want to do LSD now!

  • What an awesome guy, giving a talk with a beer in his hand...

  • aubrey rules

al those int eh fields of genetics biology should join his reasearch

  • I'm sold. I'm going to devote my life to this.

  • 1 person doesn't want to live forever.

  • I estimate that some time near the end of this century, the average person can have their bodies enhanced through nanotechnology enough that we could literally halt the aging process. The good thing is, most people under 35 have a chance of seeing this happen.

  • So this guy is basically saying that anyone who's relatively young today will have a good chance of living tepidly longer than 100 years of age?

  • The good news is that a lot of scientists in the normal science community is starting to pay attention to this as a very effective cure of a lot of diseases.

  • f(beer,beard) = bear ???

  • Please donate as much as you can to his organization. If we want to make this a reality in our lifetime his organization needs all the help it can get. :-)

  • Listen Aubrey if you're going to talk about living forever get your teeth fixed buddy, they've had that tech for centuries.. you can't tell us you want to promote health with teeth in your head.

  • @JuggernautJeep so some1 has to be perfect to be a genuis? get the hell out of here ..pls~ its his choice to be like that, who are you to judge any1 really?

  • @dishy200 Endorsement is qualified mostly by presentation Dishy, and Aubrey has his genius to thank for overcoming that need. He has however changed his tune from the extremity to a more socially acceptable one to accomplish recognition ini the short term. As far as the rest of your nonsense w/e cuddy.

  • @JuggernautJeep you made a comment based on his looks. What nonsense yur talking about? Anyways~ Thanks 4 the xtra info

  • I'm willing to be a guinea pig if they can guarantee that they can extend my lfie to a millennium.

  • @1Nanalo I'll volunteer if they can extend my lifetime by a hundred too.

  • @BioShockxx regardless he is more intelligent than that monkey inbred in the white house trying to convince us to pay for inner city minorities health care

  • Very cool stuff... very exciting!!

The guy obviously loves his beer though, he might want to avoid drinking during a presentation or interview if that is in fact a beer he is drinking.

  • @atraherne drinking beer is what makes it all worthwhile!

  • Hes epic beard man crossed with god if he was real

  • The beer aids in the cells toughness of decomposing junk in his body :) One day when all that is left is fermented fruit, his species will grow and find it's niche. :)

  • Every day before I go to bed I pray to Aubrey.

Cause unlike religion there's an actual chance that he can keep his promise ;P

  • why is he holding a beer??

  • @drbuddha exactly my point - discrediting him, innit

  • Apparently this video is popular in Afghanistan. lol

  • the greatest man who ever lived

  • if he does what he set out to do he pretty much will be

  • i would like aubrey to talk in more detail about his reasearch, his articels and the such. im reading his book and its far better than his talks. ferthermore he seems to utter the same retoric all the time (joks and all).

  • He is always drinking beer lol !!

  • @ratm2112 ahhaha i dont get it, hes just gettin plasterd yet talking so smart

  • this guy has almost the greatest beard ever!

  • Very interesting. I have confidence in man. All we do is improve. Lmao I wonder how religious groups will feel if we actually defeat aging?

  • @JDSproducitons How would they scare people into following them with no risk of eternal damnation?

  • @MrRhetorikill All I know is if you defeat death you defeat God.

  • @JDSproducitons More like create him.

  • @JDSproducitons and you become almost what is deemed godlike

  • @JDSproducitons blow up the hospitals where they do rejuvenation therapies

  • @sondano Why would I do that?

  • @JDSproducitons well i guess they should have the choice not to live forever if we are eventually able to defeat aging.. if their was proof of spiritually, i wouldnt want to live forever on this earth, but yeah for a long time because its always gonna be hard to say goodbye.

  • IS he drinking a beer on stage? De Grey is the Man.

  • Its like god in human form.

  • Thank you so much for posting such hard work for all us to hear! Very nice talk and valuable information. Thank you for working on this Dr Grey.

  • One of Aubrey's best talks if you ask me. Doesn't get distracted, stays on track and is very quick, confident and clear in his explanations. Thanks for posting! For some a talk like this can be a real eye-opener.

  • fascinating. Although im no scientist, im going to read up about his reseach and maybe donate.

  • This is fascinating. I'm def gonna go read up on his research now.

  • Amazing direction:)

But why drinking alcohol? isn't it ironic that someone professing longevity is at the same time partaking in a degenerative activity.. if indeed that was beer?

  • Often wondered about that too. It either belies a deep-seated fatalism about his crusade, or he believes the time lost to alcoholism will be gained in increased productivity/ excitement.

see 31:30 for mid-lecture guzzling. Awesome?

  • I'm twenty now and I hope that I'll stick around long enough to benefit from the things mentioned in this video. With my luck It'll probably be too expensive...

  • One of the most fascinating videos I've ever seen. This needs to be seen by as many people as possible.

  • I can't decide.

    Wizard, or dwarf?

  • @richardmaudsley77 wizard

  • epic beard

  • @Pull0utBoy Epic dye job on the beard.

  • How do you spell autofagasitozed?

  • I guess it comes from the word: phagocyte

    So... autophagocytozed?

Google gives thousands of results for autophagocytosis. So I'll go with autophagocytosed or -cytozed, depending on which side of the pond you're on.

  • I just hope such therapies will become affordable to most people by the time they'd matter for most of us.

  • Why are persistent viral infections not considered to be an 8th type of cumulative damage by Aubrey (or which category is he shoehorning them into)?

  • Because viruses are not a result metabolism's wear and tear, but the level of susceptibility to infections is a direct result of metabolic damage i.e. the collapse of the immune system.

  • Metabolic activity results in viral infections as an unintended side effect.

Persistent viral infections accumulate and contribute to age-related pathologies.

Without curing persistent diseases, elderly organisms will continue to gradually transform into a walking collection of warts, spots, and STDs that nobody will want to go anywhere near.

  • Young people don't get those diseases, they mainly target older people. If the body were maintained in a continually youthful state then you'd constantly have the same chance of getting those diseases as any 20 year old has, which is precisely what SENS is all about. The older you get the more susceptible you become.

  • Checking with the list of persistent infections: Papillomavirus, AIDS, various Epstein-Barr virus, Herpes simplex, Varicella zoster - you will see many of them are not too fussy about the age of their victims. There are other non-viral persistent infections as well - such as the infections that cause tooth decay. These are deleterious things that accumulate and eventually cause pathology when the individual is sufficiently burdened with them.

  • Looking at Aubrey's categories, pathogens could probably be shoehorned into 1) and 2) - provided a sufficiently wooly definition of "junk" is used. However "crosslinks" gets its own category. Pathogens seem at least as fundamental.

  • Again, they're not included in the types of damage because, as you admitted, they are not directly caused by aging, they are caused by other outside forces that cause infection. Certainly, susceptibility to them is increased by aging, but again, not DIRECTLY caused by it.

  • It sounds as though you have a misconception about Aubrey's list. It is not a list of problems caused by senescence. It is a list of problems that are side effects of metabolic processes that accumulate and *cause* age-related pathologies.

It is a list of things that *cause* aging - NOT a list of things caused *by* aging. See 6:00.

  • I think you're the one who needs to pay better attention because throughout all of Aubrey's talks, he always describes it as a deadly feedback loop; senescence causes aging which in turn causes more pathologies to occur, and the cycle repeats endlessly until irreparable damage is caused to the individual. And even if you were right about this, again, things like AIDS and Papillomavirus have no correlation with aging or causing it.

  • Re: "think you're the one who needs to pay better attention" - I see no evidence for me not paying attention.

Re: AIDS, Papillomavirus not causing aging - AIDS and Papillomavirus both -frequently cause *death*.

  • You're definitely in the wrong video then. SENS is about stopping death caused by aging, not other causes of death like cancer or autoimmune deficiency.

  • @tmtyler

No, it is a list of damages, not causes. The damages are, in turn, the causes of age-related illness. The damages constitute agedness, whereas the accumulation of the damages constitutes aging.

  • @inkstersco We already discussed that point: having your cells hijacked by pathogens is a kind of damage to it - according to the definition of "damage" given by Aubrey in the video at 06:00. The point should be fairly obvious - if you don't deal with persistent pathogens, they gradually accumulate, and are likely to eventually result in death.
