@MrHooligan951 yea they have to do that now since some of the referees started to get really hurt during some of the fights, so they let them fight for a bit then the refs together break it up..but the players that fight get hit with a HUGE fine

@watch4ever Spontaneous fighting is allowed in the NHL. It is a 5 minute penalty for both players who engage in the fight and the referees will break up the fight if one of the players is at a disadvantage. Example : if a player falls to his knees and can't regain control, if both players fall to the ice, or if a player has his jersey/sweater pulled above his head, etc. There are added penalties if a player taunts the other player or will not stop once the refs break it up.

@spud2125 I'm only a casual hockey fan, but by way of explanation, skill players usually don't fight. Instead, players who usually fight get into fights regularly if they don't like each other. Then players will occasionally fight because their team is down like 2 or 3 goals and they need to get fired up.

@spud2125 if a player says something to another player or if there is an uncalled for move by one player or whatever the case is that cud get someone mad there is usually a fight and where it falls into the game is whoever wins the fight, their team will have a faceoff closer to the other teams goal. but the refs do try to stop fights only when its the playoffs

@spud2125 fights are a part of the game for many reasons, the main being you don't want your team getting thrown around physically which would allow the other team to build momentum. Coach taps the tough guy or 'enforcer' (as some like to call it) on the shoulder and gives him the signal to do work. Their job is to shift momentum or build momentum for their team, whether a fight, scrum or whatever..

Example: if someone looked at wayne Gretzky the wrong way they were going to get slugged. Its the players way of getting across to other players and it really isn't senless violence. USUALLY one of the two guys legitimately deserved to be hit. The refs simply allow the two to resolve the problem themselves so they can get on with the game safely.
