  • didn't you mother ever tell you not to run with a lightsaber...

  • 2:20 wait... burguer king? you kidding me?

  • Lol

  • Using the theater was a nice touch:D Not exactly Hamlet but it was entertaining nonetheless!

  • It would've been nice if you had blasted thunders in a Highlander style, after beheading king Claudius

  • lol Dragonball Z music

  • The fights were actually pretty decently choreographed. I can dig it! Good job!!

  • I thought this was very well made.

  • This ain't bad.....or good. Probably better if i went to your high school or helped make it or something. Don't stop rocking though.

  • Wow this was actually pretty epic

  • PLEASE change the name to Jack Black vs. Voldemort

  • ahahaha epic! if only they actually did use lightsabers :/

  • Dragonball music? instant thumb up !

  • lol

  • ps it's not a book xxxxxx

  • @toypadlock I apologize about referring to Hamlet as a book. Thank you for correcting me, nerd!

  • @Joe9185 dude, you made star wars-themed Shakespearean high school play. After that, calling anybody a nerd is pretty much off-limits.

  • @LadanBeton Star Wars-themed? What the hell is Star Wars? Dont go bringing your nerd jibberish into the comments section. I made a respectable version of Hamlet that truly honors the original material in the book.

  • @Joe9185 Right. My bad :-DD

  • @Joe9185 i think you are the nerd here

  • jambalaya!

  • lol. go crack one off to jar jar binks or sth [via relevant youtube links]

  • @toypadlock Crack one off? Jar Jar Binks? Sorry, I dont understand all of this lingo you internet nerds like to use. Perhaps you should get a refund on the money you gave your college for that English degree.

  • @Joe9185 wow your a douche....

  • @insainiac1 What's wrong with my a douche? That makes no sense. Next time you should use proper grammar when you are trying to say "you're." Maybe then I'll listen to you, buddy. ;D

  • yes. im the nerd. says the man who rotoscoped a lightsaber fight.

  • @toypadlock Rotoscoped eh? Thats a big word for you, nerd. Besides, I'm not a nerd, just a special effects artist. It's called work, not a passion.

  • well done at being patronising, but I have a degree in English. my point was that this is just two nerds pretending to fight each other. just because there's a fight scene in hamlet, doesn't mean this is related. there are also fight scenes in commando.

  • @toypadlock It's actually two actors pretending to fight each other. The only nerd here is you Mr. "Degree In English."

  • If this is what passes for an educational project, no wonder America has the stupidest youths of the planet.

  • @Robikus Dont be mad fella. You're just jealous because this is the best version of Hamlet ever seen by the world and you didnt think of it first. USA! USA! USA!

  • @Joe9185 Sad.

  • @Robikus it's ok guy, you'll think of something good next time around, don't let Joe's epic fight scene get you all depressed...

  • @Robikus I don't know if you should be making fun of America's youths lack of education while not completing a sentence properly. If you had wanted that sentence to read correctly then it should read, "If this is what passes for an educational project [then it's] no wonder America has the stupidest youths of the planet."

    USA! USA! USA!

  • gee,,a Star Wars theme...that has to be...I was going to insult the complete unoriginal waste of time this was, but I got caught up in a terrific yawn before I could finish it. weak.

  • @orchote Aw thanks buddy. The fact you took the time to leave a comment about how much you hate it shows me you do care. ;D

  • EPIC!

  • That was awesome!

  • what the fuck has this got to do with hamlet?

  • @toypadlock it's the fight scene between hamlet and laertes, didn't you read hamlet? It's one of the later scenes in the play...geez kids today don't know nothin about the classics...

  • @Sflem14 I know, I try and put what was in the book onto film and the kids get all pissed off because it's not what they imagined in their heads.

  • DBZ music ftw!

  • use the force Hamlet! I sure hope you guys got an A, that was some deep sh*t

  • Awesome.

  • I go to this school XD

  • the guy with the green light sabre reminds me of Al from home improvement.

  • Just this morning i was wondering what it would be like if someone took a hamlet fight scene with a starwars method and few in dbz music .... the internet really does have everything

  • I love the background music! and The Burger King Crown XD

  • men this sword effect was realy hard to make in the 70's haahahahahahah now anyone can do =P

  • FATALITY!

  • Great work on this! The ending made me laugh... :-D

  • Thanks! I usually get some shock laughs out of the head chop, just because people dont expect it.

  • It seemed really "Wile E. Coyote"-ish of you, especially with the "I Surrender!" sign. ;-)

Also, which fighter did you play: Hamlet of Laertes?

  • I was Laertes, the less attractive one. ;)

Yeah, the "I surrender" was a Looney Toon gag. Although alot of people have complained about that because the first half of the video had a "serious tone" and the second half involving the king was more comedy.

I do agree about that, though the two scenes were never originally back to back. They were probably like 3 min apart in the "project version", which had serious moments but was also intended to be silly at times.

  • What was the "project version" like? Did it involve the rest of the play's characters, as well?

  • The "project version" was all of Act 5 Scene 2. It's ok, not great or anything. Most of it was reading the pages with the book right next to the camera lense.

There were some serious parts, but It was mostly made to be funny. Half the people were good actors and the other half were bad actors that still had to play a role in the video.

  • Huh... I figured, since the video presented here is entirely without dialogue, that your challenge was to adapt it without the characters uttering a full sentence (hence, everyone just giving each other nasty looks and Claudius only getting to go "A-ha!" at the end before his head gets chopped off); guess I was wrong, but it was still enjoyable. :-)

  • King Claudius actually had more dialogue after he is stabbed by Hamlet in the book. But I decided to cut all of that out by suprising my class and teacher with Hamlet cutting The King's head off.

  • I know that... but was it really that big of a surprise? I'd have chopped his head off the moment he turned around... ;-)

  • That is amazing! Great use of Dragon Ball Z and Buu fight music. Whoever's idea it was to roll the camera with the character was a genius xD. Loved it!

  • I was watching DBZ everyday at that time, so it seemed like a fun idea.

If I made the video again today, I would probably pick a different song. Not because I hate the Buu song, but because I've heard some other pretty awesome songs in 7 years. :P

  • Well, granted that sort of thing happens :P. Still though a great piece of work. The Burger King Crown was especially enjoyable XD.

  • he looks like a fat jeremy piven

  • What's with the white gloves?

  • No purpose really. We found them and thought they might make us a little more Shakespearian......on top of wearing khakis and Nike shoes....

  • lol hamlet + star wars + dragonball Z....nice lol.

  • I'm sure not too many people have combined those 3 things into one. ;)

  • That's the coolest thing I've ever seen.

Please make more films like this.

    Many greetings from Germany.

    5 Stars

  • Better than the Phantom Menace

  • haha dragonball z soundtrack

  • My bravos as well. I love the BK crown on Claudius.

  • We liked it also because we didnt have to spend any money on that prop. :D

  • Best High School student vid project I've ever seen. Well done. I'm sure you're a director now and successful too! Bravo!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA to last post!

  • HAHAHA ACME I SURRENDER SIGN

    I LOVE IT!

  • very nice, adobe after fx?

  • Photoshop and After Effects.

  • A high school project? The editing, choreography and recording on this is great, a lot better than some college videos I've seen. Really nice work on that. :)

  • Thanks!

  • Nice Dragon Ball Z music? xD

    Bruce Falconer

  • this was more star wars than hamelt.... kinda gay but good editing

  • lol 4 burger king XD

  • this is amazing =] much better than reading the thing itself

  • lol Thanks. But dont tell that to the one guy who left comments a few pages ago calling this video "blasphemy" compared to the book.

  • Nice swordplay at 1:35, love the back block ^_^

  • There are some bloopers where I dont do as good a job at blocking and get a few fingers smashed...........again and again.

  • So again we ask... WHEN IS NUMBER 2 COMING OUT!!!!!!! : ) If anyone would like to see another one please say "Dick Do It" My friend will know what you mean and the pressure will be so much that he will have to!!!! lol thanks guys!

  • Gli effetti speciali e quelli sonori sono fantastici ma l'interpretazione fa pena

  • totally awesome! Mega creativity- the next filmmakers of a generation.

  • You Make Hamlet AWESOME.. lol ^.^

  • I like how you retained the switching of the swords.

  • Yeah, basically the red saber is the "poisoned" sword. Sure lightsabers do the same amount of damage in the Star Wars universe, but thats why I had the green saber not make contact with anyones body parts.

  • Holy shit, I remember watching this! I can't believe I found this on YouTube. Ahh, D-Mas memories.

  • Hey Joe... when are you going to bless us with Hamlet Vs. Laertes 2? !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I have been out of work since Hamlet Vs. Laertes part 1!

  • Dont worry, we'll have another saber fight, even if we dont make it about Hamlet.

  • Is this music from Dragonball Z?

  • Yup, but only when we are fighting. The song played during the King's part wasnt a DBZ song.

  • This is actually pretty nicely done! The choreography is great, the acting is really good, the lightsabers are both well rotoscoped and well composited . The only minor details this piece lacks would be some color correction to give it more of a mood, as well as some (more) artificial lighting from the lightsabers on the actors and set. But these are very minor things, and it doesn't take away too much from the overall feel of the video, so you get a 5/5 from me anyway.

  • Thank you. I did eventually go back and do some minor color correction, aswell as a few other small things. I'll probably upload that version sometime in the future.

  • Sounds great! Can't wait to see that version!

  • We filmed this 2 1/2 years before ROTS came out, but it's kinda interesting how we sort of resemble Anakin and Obi-Wan. Atleast in appearance.

  • What program did you use for the special effects? This was fantastic.

  • Photoshop and After Effects.

  • Ryan vs Dorkman is one million better. 1/5

  • Good to know.

  • No it's not a critic on the video. The quality is very good. But video's subject is bad(1/5). But i vote 4/5.

  • YESSS!!! THIS SHOULD BE HOW ALL THE HAMLETS END!!!!! No jokes either.

  • SICK SICK SICK

    5/5

what program did you guys use?

  • SO AWSOME

    you guys are really good.

what program did you use to edit the effects?

  • XD BURGER KING!!!!!!

  • lol burger king crown

  • That might've been the 2nd greatest thing I've ever seen in my life, make more videos dude.

  • Were you in Fiddler on the Roof?

  • lol yeah I have been able to grow a beard since 8th grade lol... I was growing it out for a play there... not one of my better looks lol

  • That guy has got quite the beard for high school

  • It had absolutely nothing to do with Hamlet. According to the play, Hamlet and Laertes entered the play duel based on a wager. It was not supposed to be serious or to the death. However, Laertes blamed Hamlet for the death of Ophelia, and the King, scared of Laertes revenge, offered to Laertes this plot to kill Hamlet. The sword was poisoned, and the plan was to scratch Hamlet to his doom. It backfired however when Hamlet was cut, and during a skuffle, took the venom'd blade and wounded Laertes.

  • Also, the King had poisoned a cup of drink for Hamlet in the event that he won the wager without sustaining a wound. This backfired when the Queen drank of the Cup and died. With Laertes confessed to the plot and repented, Hamlet did in the "treacherous lesestous" King with a stab. Laertes died, the Queen died, the King died, and lastly Hamlet died. A real tragedy, and a very brilliant work of art.

  • Well duh! This is a short version. And Red Lightsaber = Poisoned. You'd know this if you read the book. :D

  • I have read the book. I've even watched the play. And I guarantee you, this video is an idiot's version of it. Still, it was good for its action and its creativity, but to compare it to the actual Hamlet is downright blasphemy.

  • The X-men movies were a bastardization of the comics. The movie I am Legend totally fucked the story from the book. It's a different interpretation of a classic story. We took a lot of liberties with the story to make it cool, but we did work our asses off, so please, don't call it an idiots version.

  • To call it an interpretation would frankly be an abomination before God. Prepare yourself, hellfire awaits all ye who make such statements! 'Interpretation"!? Must have been an interpretation of someone's hairy butt. On the other hand, if you ignore the idiocy, it was good from the standpoint of acting and special effects. Now for that, you deserve a standing ovation. You see, it's just pretending that it is Hamlet that is insulting. Everything else you should be very proud of.

  • That is the most professional head falling off I have ever seen. That guy should get awards for that part. I mean, it's not every day that you loose your head.

  • nothin like dbz music with light sabers nd based on william shakespeare, lol, funny shit

  • Ha, that's a good one. I prefer the old fashioned version, but it was funny :D

  • wow...this is awsome x

  • wow, lame...

  • too bad it didnt go like that in the book. at all

  • The only thing different was Hamet chopping the kings head off without the additional dialogue from the king...........oh, and the lightsabers.

  • I guess you haven't actually read Hamlet.

  • owned!

  • haha, that was amusing

  • fuglys

  • for a bunch of fukin nerds the effects were FANTASTIC

  • This is an interesting interpretation of Hamlet. LOL!

The fight coordination, and the special effects were amazing! All in all this was awesome video! Great work!

  • Thanks!

  • nevermind dbz cell theme

    god that drove me crazy

i love dbz great vid guys

  • what was the song played during hamlet and laertes' battle it sounds so familiar but i can't quite tell exactly what it's from?

  • LOL. Burger King ftw.

  • has nothing to do with the story of hamlet.

read the book or for the lazy ones look up "wikipedia".

  • The king getting his head chopped off doesnt happen in the book. I merely did that to suprise the rest of my class.

  • LMFAO TO THE LAST SCENE

  • erm.. but wt has it got to do wif hamlet

  • its the final battle in Hamlet

  • How did you create the special effects? What software?

  • probably, adobe after effects

  • Yup, After Effects and PhotoShop.

  • beautiful and well put video by the way. kudos to you =) hope you got an A! your HS auditorium kicks my HS auditorium's ass =(

  • We got like an A+++. I'm told by current seniors that my teacher still shows a copy of my whole project to all her new classes every year.

  • yup, Mrs. McGrew just showed it today, except she doesn't have the version with the sabers until you chop off the king's head. The rest of the fight scene (identical) appears to be with wooden rods?

  • I'm actually putting together a complete version right now that has all the lightsabers in the regular project. I didnt originally have a good copy of the one you guys saw in class, but luckily I found it on a tape that I hade buried in a box, so I'm gonna make the "special edition" to give back to McGrew and Riley.

  • Sounds good, hopefully we'll get to see it this year. Our group is also doing the duel scene, and you provided quite a bit of inspiration as far as how to do the actual fight scenes.

  • Thats cool. When is your project due?

  • March 20th... I was going to be Laertes but just had foot surgery, so the duel is out for me, I'll probably take the king's role or something, maybe even Fortinbras at the end.

  • beautiful and well put video by the way. kudos to you =) hope you got an A! your HS auditorium kicks my HS auditorium's ass =(

  • that was corny but funny.... off with his fuckin head.... Whopper Beeeeeeeeeeyotch!!!!

  • awesome but funny in the end

  • OH MY GOD. That was 10 shades of awesome, and I love the humor at the end.

  • The one who killed the king...

  • which one is hamlet?

  • Nice work.

  • this is brilliant, i love the special effects

  • Nice special effects

  • Haha... Man that was fun... When I get home we have to make Laertes Return...lol Miss ya bro!

  • Well done, but doesn't Hamlet die?

  • i liked the ending...

  • Nice. Very very nice.

  • Brillant. I hope you got an A.

  • Nice

  • wow sweet video that was awesome

  • yup, XD

  • The guy in the Red is really cute haha... All this video lacks is someone saying...MY GOD!!!!

  • I'm a primary school English teacher. I've just shown this to the kids after introducing Hamlet. They were stunned. So am I. You're great guys! The Hamlet one is absolute genius! Could you upload more clips of that?
