  • Posted nearly a year ago and his web site is now a holding page about Bras!

Teenage angst strikes again, stifling the early promise of a talented young musician?

  • Nah im still playing, lots, need to get some more videos up :)

Ha, i liked the Angst remark though, made me smile.

  • Happy New Year James Earl

  • Hello. First of all I want to congrat, nice song, nice play. But my question is: where can I find the tab/chords of this song? Or where do you learnt it from? Thanks.

  • Haha, "sound quality is shocking". It sounded pretty darn good. You're doing a great job, guy. So are you writing your own songs? Think it's time to do so. Keep it going.

    ~ Elliott (zerobio)

  • It makes me happy watching you play, especially this tune...it's so cool; i'm trying to learn it at the moment and loving it!!!! Textbook playing man

  • I come back to your videos regularly just to remind myself that there are talented young guys out there that obviously spend time doing the right things in life - music stays with you your entire life. I am moved every time I see these. I never get tired of them. You're amazing and I hope my boys will find their niche in music like you have~

  • Ah dude you're awesome. Apart from playing incredibly well, its nice to hear something apart from the dumb shredding that about 99% of people on Youtube play

  • Good job my friend, ignore these idiots. Classical guitars sound dull and soulless with their plastic strings, you made the right choice. keep it up.

  • good debate

i think that thinking realistically the greastest classical guitar players would be much more technically able than the best steel string players. John williams would murder tommy technically, but i think i like listening to tommy play the guitar over john or any other classical guitar player.

he put alot of emotion into it and hes got better rythmn than most drummers.

i think that phil should do what ever he wants with music, as long as he keeps playing.

  • Great job! Truly enjoyed that!

    Thanks for sharing! 5+Star's!

    God bless you and your's!

    GinMillBill

  • ☆☆☆☆☆❤ It's Outstanding ❤☆☆☆☆☆ ....your fans, j.austin ~&~ family

  • Awesome! very nice.

  • I think your playing is very good, and you should be so proud of yourslef. You are very talented!

  • Wow what an argument. However, 123dool has just been completely arrogant on his side. Part of being a great musician is to respect all types of music. He obviously does not. In my opinion, hes just a poor jealous soul that cannot see past the tip of his nose.

Btw Phil, bad techniques or not, its the soul in the music that you produce that counts.

  • OK i think its time to end this, Both classical and acoustic have there good points. I just prefer to play acoustic.

  • 123dool:

Classical music is great, but it is not the only good music.

I find it hard to believe that you are sincerely trying to teach Phil anything, or to bring any benefit to him, because your approach is so arrogant and insulting. It's safe to say that your motives are without honor.

The list of master guitarists who have used acoustic guitars is a long one.

Chet Atkins' friendship with Andres Segovia survived Segovia's discovery that Chet sometimes used an electric.

  • 123dool: With reference to one of your comments below, about Tommy Emmanuel:

Tommy Emmanuel did not make his way to the top of the music world, nor did he gain the respect of fellow musicians everywhere, by 'failing,'cultivating 'bad habits,' and playing simple and insipid music.

The great classical artists are among the best of professionals, but that is partly because they know better than to disparage their fellow musicians. They are secure enough to have no need to denigrate others.

  • There is no body cares about tone more than a classical guitarist! Acoustic players are hiding behind amps or steel strings which covers their mistakes but let them play without it or apply their songs on a nylon string guitar and look how vulnerable they will be

  • You're just wrong! Amps and effects pedals may cover up a certain amount of mediocre guitar playing, but if you're not really good, you'll never gain the respect of fellow musicians. You're comparing apples and oranges here.

  • Pkw, and what repertoire do you have? Except those low level easy songs you are playing. This cannot be called a repertoire! Your best dream is to have a good voice to support your instrument or to stick behind a band and play two or 3 notes or 2 to 3 chords the whole song. Your statement shows nothing but ignorance about the classical repertoire which includes thousands of beautiful songs which you cannot even dare to play one of them.

  • You know what? You are far more arrogant than I even imagined! You talk about ignorance? I can name you any number of non-classical guitarists who've had splendid careers who were not known for their singing: Besides TE, there's Chet Atkins, Doyle Dykes, Muriel Anderson, Laurence Juber, Leo Kottke, John Fahey, Alex de Grassi, Rick Allred, Andy McKee, Steven King, Phil Keaggy, and that's just a few of the better known fingerstyle players. It's not easy to make a living in the music industry....

  • ...but I would venture to say it is no easier in the classical arena than in any other genre. Care to guess how many excellent classical guitarists there are who don't make a living at it? Give me a break. There may be good reasons to study classical technique to improve one's over-all guitar playing, but if you're good, you're good whether or not you've been classically trained. If what TE does is so easy, why aren't players of his style and caliber a dime a dozen?

  • Tommy uses techniques I've never seen a classical guitarist use. Doyle Dykes uses a lot of classical guitar technique in his playing, but I don't think he's ever been classically trained. I have a lot of respect for classical guitar players, but you're carrying it way too far. Fact is, you're a snob when it comes to classical guitar. Phil might benefit from a little classical training, but he may well do just fine without it. Thank you very much.

  • Great videos of less than average player though if you want to be the best guitarist then listen: FirstOfAll trash your acoustic guitar. Second, pick up a classical guitar, listen to great classical players. Third:find a good classical guitar teaching method or agood teacher because you are a project of a great classical guitarist. Best players are either classical or flamenco, while acoustic players are average players, if you want to end up as an average player then stick with your acoustic.

  • Well not to offend you but i find lots of (not all) classical guitar music boring and theres no feeling in it, its very bland if you ask me.

Plus i hate rules, classical players have all these rules like use a stole an keeping your thumb in the right place and i think its not how you play its how it sounds, so im sorry but i think ill be keeping my acoustic.

Music is about having fun anyway, and i have fun playing acoustic, would you ditch something you find fun, didnt think so.

  • stole? i meant stool

  • Being not able to find good classical pieces to listen to is not an excuse nor the rules. Classical guitar is the mother of all guitars though it still the most harmonic if you want to talk about sound, tone or level of difficulty. What do you think your finger picking is? Its classical, but if you would try to take on a classical piece you will look like a handicap.

About the rules, you can play it your way if you understand what you are doing and the goal you want to achieve.

  • Sorry pkw, I thought for a moment that your dream might be mastering the instrument which something you will never achieve if you just want to have fun with your acoustic, so have fun.

  • This is one of the most arrogant and subjective comments I've ever read about guitar playing. First of all, it takes great skill to play like Tommy Emmanuel or Doyle Dykes. If either of those guys wanted to play classical, I'm sure they would and be great at it. Classical is only one style of guitar playing, and while I have great admiration for classic guitarists such as Julian Bream, Andres Segovia, John Williams, and Chris Parkening, to name a few, I'm glad it's not the only game in town!

  • Let me correct something, if Emmanuel wanted to play classical he will most likely fail to do so because the acoustic and electric players create very bad habits with their hands as the time passes and after certain number of years, it will be almost impossible for them to get rid of those habits therefore they will never be successful if they would try to take on classic. What I am saying here is that Pkw is still young and he did not pickup the bad habits as much as the older players.

  • Boy, for someone who is not a great player, you sure seem to know a lot about what Tommy Emmanuel could not do. Perhaps some of what you're saying is true about the classical guitar style, but I would venture to say it takes as much discipline to learn to play like Tommy Emmanuel, and that it would be as challenging as anything a classical guitarist would play. The fact that acoustic fingerstyle guitar playing is not considered legitimate music does not make it any less technically challenging.

  • Thanks Guitmartiman :)

  • Guitarman are you kidding me? So you believe that the acoustic playing is not less technically challenging than classical? You must be kidding me! Any song Tommy Emmanuel plays is considered by any intermediate classical guitarist as a childish song. What is the most difficult song Emmanuel played in your opinion???

  • No, I'm not saying all acoustic playing is as challenging as classical, but I am saying that advanced techniques in fingerstyle acoustic playing can be as challenging as anything you might play classically. But, again, it's not fair for you to denigrate one genre compared to another unless you yourself are proficient in both.

  • BTW, I don't believe I've seen any of your videos. Care to personally demonstrate the superiority of classical guitar? I'd love to hear you.

  • I do not have to be a great player to say what I am saying but you got to have a vision. But FYI the truth is that any average or even less than average classical guitar player would look at any acoustic guitar music as too simple to play for the degree that they would not pickup any of this music just because it is way less than their level. The technique and the security of the hands that the classical guitarist build is unmatched.

  • Okay guitmartiman I do not want to appear as a closed minded person but in fact I like other variations of classical guitar like the flamenco style, but even a flamenco teacher would recommend that his student should learn classical guitar for two or 3 years before he takes on flamenco.

  • Hi Phil,

You're a great guitar player. I've been watching your videos for some time now. You keep getting better with age. Keep up the good work. I'd love to meet you someday.

    All The Best,

    Rick Allred

  • WOW! a comment from Rick Allred!

If i can ever afford a plane ticket to CAAS one day, i hope to meet you!

    Thanks again

    Phil

  • O...M....G...are you serious?!! This song too!?! I love this song! YOU ARE BECOMING A LENGEND. I'm still serious about the CD thing. ;D - JOJO

  • Another fantastic performance. You're going to be picking with the best of them and I can wait til then. Just one question, did you teach yourself or have a teacher?

  • Excellent Phil. Fantastic playing

  • Great playing! Maybe a little bit too much revurb but it still sounds good. I really like your Maton! What kind of Maton is it? Check out my new video, "To B or not to B" :)

    Cya!

    Lars

  • Lars: According to a comment provided by Phil, this Maton is a "Custom" presented to him by a sponsor from the United States, so it probably isn't a standard model. Phil has said that, of the five guitars that he owns, this one is his favorite. He has remarked that it is difficult to get a guitar to sound as good on a YouTube video as it does in person.

  • once again... awesome job.

  • That's brilliant, man~ what an improvement!!

    Cheers!!

    Simon

  • great! I was on his concert yesterday, I mean Tommy Emmanuel !! He the best ! your cover is really good, I can tell ya!! well done!

  • are you the one doing the sound mixing of your guitar? It really sounded very nice Philip

  • good job!

  • You are getting better and better with each video. Caleb's Report and this one are on a professional level of playing, in my opinion. Keep it up and we could be going to your concerts and buying your cds soon. Good luck!

  • Wow. That is awesome! Keep Pickin!

  • Very good !!! That tune is not easy !

  • i think it still sounds very nice

  • Zach: I agree with you 100%.

  • another great job on the song. keep it up

  • what kind of guitar is that?

  • Zach: If you will scroll through the postings for this video, you will find that Phil has identified this guitar as a "custom Maton" and that it is "by far [his]favorite."

Phil does a fine job of creating videos, but he has pointed out that it is difficult to make a video that sounds as good as live music.

  • you play so nice li'l bud...wish you were closer to the mic...

  • phil your nuts

    awsome job

  • Great to see a new vid of yours!! Thanks for posting.hop to see more soon.

  • My God, it's all there: harmonies, groove, melody, timing. That's really amazing, thank you!

  • You never cease to amaze me man, holding the timing down perfectly while finger picking, good job!You make it look so easy.I hope you get a scholarship to a top ranked music school.Good Show!

  • That was awesome - keep up the great work :)

    5/5

  • dude you should be famous. why aren't you famous!

  • you rock!

  • Your covers are great, do you write music also? I'd love to see your original tunes *****/*****

  • WOW, that sounds great!

  • Where can we buy YOUR cd?

  • Nice work Phil! =)

  • Played perfectly! Even the quality and timbre of the sound reminds me of Tommy.

  • Well done Phil! Few adults could do as well.

  • you rock! :)

  • So well played you got it!

  • Perfect! 5 *****

  • Great Phil!

  • Great playing Phil!! Beautiful!

  • Sweet, Phil! A fine tribute to Mr. Guitar from Tommy, and I think you've captured the essence of Chet in the way you play it.

    Love it!

    Moosie

  • You continue to make me jealous. Great job as usual.

  • You've come a long way in two years. It was awesome to hear. 5*****

  • Holly Cow!! you're good man!

  • Very nice man!

  • You are so damn good. I love hearing you play.

  • Very nice, man. Are you just using the audio your camera picks up?

  • If you can get a Shure SM 57 microphone and

connect it to a recorder (tape or digital) &

aim the mike at your guitar between the sound

hole & where the neck meets the body & put the mike about 18 inches from the guitar, you should hear a better sound. As for video, that is another issue. Maybe this comment is

not as pertinent as needed, but there are

many ways to improve sound. Just something

for you to consider. :) GOOD PICKING!

  • Sounds Great! :) Well done!

  • Great man! Good effort! - you surely are passionate about playing your guitar : )

  • nice one Phil! that song must be really hard, but you played it so smoothly... when did you start working on it?

  • thanks for posting this...you're amazing

  • dude you should find a way to get in touch with Eric Clapton and send him some of your videos and see if he'll have you at his next guitar festival or something...

  • Very enjoyable as always. Don't worry about the sound quality--this is only YouTube, and you are very generous to share your work with us for free! When I start buying your recordings and concert tickets, then I'll start worrying about sound quality!

  • very goood!

  • Tommy's a damn good songwriter, isn't he? I grew up with a great admiration for Chet Atkins and his music. So it does my heart good to find that you and Tommy Emmanuel share a similar respect for him.

Did I mention how much I love your newest guitar? I'm not sure what you mean by your comment, 'Sound quality is shocking', but I think it sounds great. A beautifully finished instrument, too.

  • Oo dont get me wrong this guitar sounds fantastic live!!

just i suck at recording videos and i seem to get way to much bass!

    Thanks

    Phil

  • Phil: By this time, you must know my opinion of your music, so I'll try not to bore you with still more superlatives trying to describe your superb artistry. Having said that:

    1) Thank you for your generosity in sharing your music with all of us these past few years. This performance is as beautiful as ever.

    2) Still another beautiful guitar. By my count, #5. Beautiful, beautiful tone. Please tell me: What brand and model is it?

  • I am very thankful you like my music, i hope i can continue getting better and that you continue to like it, thanks for sticking with me! This is a custom Maton, again brought for me by Richard from CA, Im forever in his debt!

Its my last guitar, and by far my favorite, but i have way to many so no more new ones, this line up will be the line up for sometime!

It sounds so good live but all muffled on video and i cant seem to get it to sound good! but im sure ill figure it out

    Thanks

    Phil

  • Very nice! You are getting better all the time!
