@mhstpt : thank you very much for your tips....surely it's very helpfull...sorry for the reply took so long time to send....I got troubles since I made new email with androids...and still does...last time I use my xpressmusic and all of suden my youtube acc seems to froze...
If it is possible, then try to find the CD with "First Brass". Derek and Allan Botschinsky together with the van lier brothers from the Nederlands - thats totally amazing.
Mr Watkins played the titletheme to some James Bond movies and lots and lots of other stuff.
omg dude... that was like the best i´ve ever heard o.o. your so good.... and that´s true. after this its just do i like someone else sound more. loved it!
Ascoltandola sembra di sprofondare in una sorta di sonno ipnotico, dove la bravura del solista è in comunicazione con l’ascoltatore facendolo godere musicalmente che appare meraviglioso.
@TheClasax My pleasure. Some comments on Youtube are a little into outer space. Others, like this one are intelligent questions. A saxophonist won't necessarily be as familiar with the various trumpets. I was a music teacher, a professional trumpet player and am a jazz historian. I was happy to be of service.
@mhstpt how come..... you knew I played a sax? the first brass instrument is a trumpet, but when I tried to play it, I only could finish not even half of the song, I got sweaty all over after 30 minutes practice, then I tried trombone.....almost the same....but then when I played the sax or a clarinet I could finished several songs. Till now I still practice my trumpet or trombone but with very little step of improvement......any tips...?thank you very much..........
@TheClasax I figured you were a saxophonist, based on your name. :) As a music teacher, I had to learn all the instruments. To be good at all is challenging. James Morrison does a good job at it, but most focus on woodwinds or brass and then specific instruments at that. I can suggest some things that could help you play a little better.
@mhstpt Sooooooo.......what should I focus more than the other to play better ?.....I'm sorry, the previous comment....I meant the first brass instrument that attracted me to learn to play is a trumpet and always a trumpet or a trombone....they could sound very smooth yet could be so dominant, so harsh, or so loud not like any other instrument.....try to make it louder without the s.system, you'll brake the strings or else...may be I'm too old, I started to play 2 yrs ago when I was 37..
@TheClasax That is always a good question - how to sound musical on any instrument. Starting at 37 is not too old. In fact, you are never too old to learn a brass instrument or any musical instrument for that matter! Trumpet players (and this applies to all brass players) practice long tones, where they hold the note for an extended period and get priogressively louder and then softer. They also practice what are called "breath" attacks to start a note more delicately as a practice aid.
@TheClasax I would also suggest that you lear how to position your tongue. You do not "attack" a note but rather release your air, by taking your tongue away from in front of your air stream. The closer your tongue is to your teeth before removing it determines how sharp an attack you will have. Thus, if the tongue is behind the teeth or even between the teeth, it will be a much sharper attack than if starting from the roof of your mouth (i.e. the hard palate).
i can tell you all he play's a flugel horn at the begining of this piece and swaps to trumpet when the fast bit comes in. both his instruments are smith watkins modified for him. love this piece, mite try and play it sometime soon :)
Opps. I'm wrong about the horn. Got my old Conn down and this is not that horn.. After some digging, I learn that Mr. Watkins plays a horn of his own design....the Smith-Watkins trumpet, as stated elsewhere on this site. Its a large horn with big bell and that threw me off. Still no excuse. Sorry.
Dizzy called Derek "Mr Lead" I heard him on a jazz gig in the uk in a pub--he didn't play above a top c--but great playing with so much to say,
Have a look at the alan downey tribute site on my space to hear him play weve only just begun--triple F's but some wonderful jazz playing -briilant arrangement too.
Sorry headslo, Mic did not play lead trumpet in any of the James Bond films that I know of. It is possible he played for a more recent one, or for the bond video games. That, I don't know. Derek also played in the trumpet section for the orchestra performing with the metal band from Finland called, Nightwish on their CD titled, "Once".
For those who don't know who Derek Watkins is, he is an incredible trumpet player and is the regular lead trumpet for the James Last Orchestra. You can hear Derek playing in the upper register on recordings of the old James Bond movies. The trumpet he plays is a Smith-Watkins which he helped design.
@satchm05 He's been around a long time as a studio player and featured soloist. Odds are you've heard him and didn't know it. He provided the high lead trumpet you hear on many of the James Bond soundtracks. If you look on here among other things he's featured with James Last on an amazing version of MacArthur's Park.
Sometimes i think, he played this model of trumpet, because the sound is softer, but other time he plays faster and i think then its a "normal trumpet"... =)
too many grace notes , makes it sound cheesy

Is it trombone valve or a trumpet?it seems to be bigger than a trumpet, doesn't it?
TheClasax 1 year ago
@TheClasax That is a Bb trumpet. Derek also plays a flugelhorn, which is shaped a little differently and gives a darker sound.

Absolutely some of the best playing I've ever heard. He has it all, technique, sound, range and finally....taste.
And yes, that looks like the old Conn Connie 38B. Got mine in 1962 and its still a great horn.
