A total musical misunderstanding of the way to communicate the TEXT! A caricature. Fit for ballroom dancing! What is the man thinking of? The singer is pressed to the extreme. No phrasing and a typical original instrument fantasy. A totally unstaisfying piece of persoal promotion regardless of the price the music and text must pay. A travesty!!
Well you've got a point there indeed my man. But at the other hand, the thing with bach is that he often puts sad words to swinging tunes. For example the closing piece of this passion, "Wir setzen uns mit Tränen nieder", is put to the tune of a sarabande... a dance tune. I think it intensifies the emotion. sadness is not always slow, in fact crying is a very energetic emotion. an eruption, and certiantly not someting for a slow and melancholical tune.
@DeHeld8 the music is so perfect, i dont think the tempo matters. but you are right, there are no rules, i like the swing, but i understand the slow versions too. i must admit though, the ending of this version is perfect. i play violin and piano and i think Bach requires the performer to look at the music and figure out what the speed is. i just think the tempo is contained in the music as a sort of puzzle.
jest to wielka muzyka, Koopman z amsterdamską barokową orkiestrą wydobyli z niej chyba wszystko. Serdeczne dzięki im za To.

Yes, of course :) But I also like a slower version, especially when you read the text.. it almost seems she's happy she's crying :P

Hmkay, perhaps you're right. Sometimes sadness is faster indeed, but in this case I like slow better :).. By the way, Sarabande is a slow dance.

@DeHeld8 Haha, it's what Gardiner said, that Bach's music can't be performed too serious or too rigid, you know? Or it'll lose it's essence.

Bach's music is wonderful, perfect and in the hands of Ton Koopman beyond the sublime
