About 1 Month ago on ABC News online, there was a posting about a South Aust. community that had a lot of break-ings into the local store and houses by Aboriginal Youths. They were looking for food because they were starving. The S.A Government was looking forward to the opening of the school season BECAUSE these kids will receive 3 meals a day and that includes a hot meal at lunchtime.

As a native american, I strongly empathize with Aboriginee Australians, their story of surviving genocide echo's my peoples story. I have very little hope that the non-indigenous Australians will ever have the intellectual capacity to understand what these people have been through, and why the odds are against them. I think dependency is not the answer to poverty. This is a problem here in the U.S. There are many unjust acts that have resulted in peoples liberties and civil rights being trampled. We work closely with the communities and artists and see first hand how the conditions are. There are not to many people that would want to go into a town camp. Overcrowding from the government seems to be fair?? Poor health and living conditions yet we ask for everyone to get a job?? That doesn't make sense. We need Aboriginals to stay true to their heritage and culture and not be stamped out by "White Australia". We need to understand this amazing culture, RESPECT and learn from them.

Once you cause a negative disruption of great proportions in people's lives-those who were first-hand directly affected may go on to die but the negative lingering effects of that disruption remain without a known set end date nor disappearing time,and yes-it does cause an hindrance because it is a negative affect-but the disruption should not have been done to begin with in the first place.It is like intentionally hurting yourself and then complaining of not liking the unsightly scar(s).

@AlienFirefox Honestly, I know nothing of Australian Aboriginal issues. I have met various people with differing opinions; some overly sympathetic and some not enough. All I can say is what I see, life is hard for these people and for that I feel for them. However, many of their struggles may be the implications of laziness and various other assimilation issues. But, I am just a Mexican living in America, to most people my opinion would be devoid of any relevance anyway. So yeah, I don't know.

Do you live a traditional aboriginal culture in huts, foraging for food in the outback? Or do you have 1/32 Aboriginal heritage and claim to be Aboriginal from that? The very divisive nature of referring to yourself as a 'white Aboriginal' and others as 'white Australians' perpetuates segregation.

Australian Aboriginals have the lowest standard of living in the Western world - dying younger, having the worst health. The Government has been known to reverse decisions made by Elders who try and improve things (case in point the Elders banned alcohol from a town and the Government gave a license to someone to sell in that town - saw this in a docu many years ago). I lived in Australia for 2 years and saw v few Aboriginal people - even fewer who were healthy

It is clear that they are happier when they do NOT live the way that you suggest - that is why in the Kakadu they live separately from the rest of Australia, and stick to their traditional way of life. @shanoinoz - in my time in Australia I rarely saw healthy Aboriginal people. I do not blame white people for individual acts, and I was horrified at the way that Aboriginal people lived in Redfern for example, and that is why I think that they should live a traditional life. I am sure that many liberals would admit that they would not want Aboriginals living next door - if they were really honest, but that doesn't mean that Aboriginal people are scum or should be forced to live 'our' way.
@shanoinoz - I hope then that you never express any opinion about anything that is going on outside Australia, indeed outside your direct experience. I do not see why the fact that I am educated and not Australian should mean that any opinion I have (unless I totally agree with you of course) is invalid. Indigenous people the world over have been treated in very similar ways, with some very similar effects (US being a prime example). I don't like it. I am not the only one.

@goddog47 - you are not indigenous, but I take your point, and Australia as a country was established by European settlers. I should have said 'it's their bloody land'. I am not ignorant about it - I know that many aboriginal people are very far from a proud people, but I think that if your people had been murdered (Tasmania for e.g: complete wipeout) children taken away from you, and being forced to live in a way you clearly are not cut out for you would likely deteriorate too.
@perf5paul Are you referring to the children who were brought from Britain and Ireland to provide a white workforce, mostly by church organisations? 'The Lost Children' was the documentary, the book I know was Oranges and Sunshine. Not talked about because the British and Australian governments wanted to cover it up. Most of the documentation was 'lost'.

Im referring to single mothers (white australians) during the same period who were forced to hand their children over for adoption. Some of these were drugged, some where tied up and I herd one story of a women who was so hysterical they rolled her up in a rug and carried her out of the hospital. These single mothers werent even allowed to hold their babies after birth.
@perf5paul Yes, it was common practice to treat unmarried pregnant women with this level of callousness, but not just in Australia. They even locked up women in asylums for years if her family rejected her in the UK. In Ireland they were treated horribly too.

@perf5paul The difference for Aboriginal people was that they were ALL determined as being bad parents. Aboriginal family life just did not correspond with the white Christian proscription, this is something that other black people say about when black children have been removed from their families - that things like not getting married have been severely punished by removal, but also when things go wrong black families tend to be judged much more harshly by social services than white families

As for: aboriginal families are treated harsher than white families... when 66% of the prison population are aboriginal and they make up about 15% of the total Australian population, somethings wrong and needs fixing. @perf5paul As a comparison to the average white family - they were considered inferior. I know that they were not ALL taken away from their families. I also know that white men set out to murder every Tasmanian Aboriginal person with a policy of shoot on sight. We work closely with the communities and artists and see first hand how the conditions are. There are not to many people that would want to go into a town camp. Overcrowding from the government seems to be fair?? Poor health and living conditions yet we ask for everyone to get a job?? That doesn't make sense. All I can say is what I see, life is hard for these people and for that I feel for them. However, many of their struggles may be the implications of laziness and various other assimilation issues. Australian Aboriginals have the lowest standard of living in the Western world - dying younger, having the worst health. The Government has been known to reverse decisions made by Elders who try and improve things (case in point the Elders banned alcohol from a town and the Government gave a license to someone to sell in that town - saw this in a docu many years ago). I lived in Australia for 2 years and saw v few Aboriginal people - even fewer who were healthy

It is clear that they are happier when they do NOT live the way that you suggest - that is why in the Kakadu they live separately from the rest of Australia, and stick to their traditional way of life. Westernisation is killing them and I think that they should have land that they can live a traditional life on - it IS their bloody country!

I am sure that you think I am not 'qualified' to comment, but as this is a free forum for comment I don't see why the hell views like yours should go unchallenged. All the evidence shows that Aboriginal Australians do not thrive in a Westernised environment and that they do better when living separately in the traditional way. At least the latter might appeal to you!

@shanoinoz - in my time in Australia I rarely saw healthy Aboriginal people. I do not blame white people for individual acts, and I was horrified at the way that Aboriginal people lived in Redfern for example, and that is why I think that they should live a traditional life. I am sure that many liberals would admit that they would not want Aboriginals living next door - if they were really honest, but that doesn't mean that Aboriginal people are scum or should be forced to live 'our' way.

I do not see why the fact that I am educated and not Australian should mean that any opinion I have (unless I totally agree with you of course) is invalid. Indigenous people the world over have been treated in very similar ways, with some very similar effects (US being a prime example). I don't like it. I am not the only one.

@goddog47 - you are not indigenous, but I take your point, and Australia as a country was established by European settlers. I should have said 'it's their bloody land'. I am not ignorant about it - I know that many aboriginal people are very far from a proud people, but I think that if your people had been murdered (Tasmania for e.g: complete wipeout) children taken away from you, and being forced to live in a way you clearly are not cut out for you would likely deteriorate too.

'The Lost Children' was the documentary, the book I know was Oranges and Sunshine. Not talked about because the British and Australian governments wanted to cover it up. Most of the documentation was 'lost'.

Im referring to single mothers (white australians) during the same period who were forced to hand their children over for adoption. Some of these were drugged, some where tied up and I herd one story of a women who was so hysterical they rolled her up in a rug and carried her out of the hospital. These single mothers werent even allowed to hold their babies after birth.

@perf5paul Yes, it was common practice to treat unmarried pregnant women with this level of callousness, but not just in Australia. They even locked up women in asylums for years if her family rejected her in the UK. In Ireland they were treated horribly too.

@perf5paul The difference for Aboriginal people was that they were ALL determined as being bad parents. Aboriginal family life just did not correspond with the white Christian proscription, this is something that other black people say about when black children have been removed from their families - that things like not getting married have been severely punished by removal, but also when things go wrong black families tend to be judged much more harshly by social services than white families

As for: aboriginal families are treated harsher than white families... when 66% of the prison population are aboriginal and they make up about 15% of the total Australian population, somethings wrong and needs fixing. I also know that white men set out to murder every Tasmanian Aboriginal person with a policy of shoot on sight.
