Just come across this and I SAW THIS HAPPEN!!! I work on a golf course on the edge of the peak district, not far from stockport (near manchester, england). You get a really good view of the whole of manchester and can clearly see the beetham tower. I stopped work to watch the massive storm pass over manchester and saw the tower get struck. andycoopr wasn't your video mentioned in the metro newspaper with a still of the vid? I know this is real cos I saw it with my own eyes! believe people.
I miss big storms from Tampa bay and Tennessee I live in Florida but starngely all the good weather seems to avoid Pembroke Pines :( I hate endless sunny days...
I live like an hour and half away from Manchester, we got this storm but because it had travelled it wasn't as bad as this. We've had some nasty storms in our area though!
Awesome view! Does anyone happen to know if the after storm from I think it was hurricane katrina ever get caught on Camera when it came over the UK? I can't remember if that was the actual storms name, but I remember it was an amazing storm. I was living in Wythenshawe at the time it happened. Multiple lightning bolts shooting through the clouds!
Nice shot. Yeah, most people (including me a while ago) are surprised when they find out most lightning goes from the ground up. It's always portrayed in film and books etc. coming from the cloud.
i remember this, it also struck a big crane outside the LCCC cricket ground too when they were working on the new extension bit where i work, hope we get another big storm soon.
Very cool to see the charge reaching upward to connent with the opposite charge. You don't see this with the naked eye. That is why most people think that all lightning strikes. This is a great example of the opposite occuring. Great catch.
its got one of them metal pole things that run right through the building to the ground so when it gets hit like that it just goes into the earth. usually all big sky scrapers have them due to them being at higher risk because lightng usually strikes the tallest object first.
You faked this using legobricks to make the buildings and an electric lighter spark to make the bolt.. Jokes! Cool vid m8 u got lucky catching this wonder :)
I live in castlefield and was leaving for work when it happened, was thundering and lightning around the city centre for around an hour, stormiest weather i've seen in years.

Oh you were in manchester that day were you? Well if you were in or around the center of Manchester it wasn't before 12pm. After which it started to brighten up. If you still insist that it was sunny all morning then You must have got your countries mixed up. Maybe you were in on of the many Manchesters in the USA? Actually I was sat in the office working and Randomly decided to quickly set a webcam up in the window, on the off chance i might get something on camera.
How can it be fake, it was on the news and everything. Also there was a storm all over Manchester and a plane got hit by lightening on it's way out from Manchester airport which confirms there was a storm. So why are the people who say it's fake being so unbelieving about this!!
I saw the lightening strike my self from eccles new rd in the car with 2 other people. It lit the whole sky and I guess there must be hundreds of other people who saw it
This is a bloody fantastic video, mate! And truly deserves the recognition it is getting. Well caught! :o)
And for those who are saying this is fake. That is simply not true. I have known Andy personally for over many years, and he would not even think about faking a video. So go back to playing with your Lego and get a life!
Well done you were lucky to be in the right place at the right time ,i enjoyed the way you slowed the video down makes the view much better look forward to the nexed one this time can you sit king kong on the top see how he gets out of that one, lol great video it looks genuine to me good on ya.
FAKE!!! i dont think so!! i live right by it and can confirm this was a big storm this day, its been caught on video and was in the news so all the pesimistic poster out there... go boil your head
i live not far from the beetham tower just out of town and we can see it clearly directly down our road its the tallest structure so im not suprised to learn it was hit, its awesome you captured it and esp awsome that you slowed it down to show peoples common misconception that lighting strikes down when in fact it travels up from the ground its the speed at which it does this which causes tit to seem the other way round!
haha, how can you say thts fake??? lol fuckin people on ere say everythings fake, the weather tht mornin was mad i live in burnage bout 5 miles away from there and it was like tht all around manchester. so its not fake.
that building is a secret governent building that fights aliens, it was shooting a beam up at an alien warship which was planning to attack earth - yes the alien ship is what caused the eclipse over asia!
How lightning initially forms is still a matter of debate: Scientists have studied root causes ranging from atmospheric perturbations (wind, humidity, friction, and atmospheric pressure) to the impact of solar wind and accumulation of charged solar particles. Ice inside a cloud is thought to be a key element in lightning development, and may cause a forcible separation of positive and negative charges within the cloud.
This is not fkin fake i live in manchester n a lighting a lighting hit a pylon near my house n i was up most the night listening to the storm so u ppl need to shut the fuck up coz its the worst storm ever happened im Manchester

Great work Andy - such a rare event to capture! The BBC were on the roof of Beetham on this morning (Friday) recording something about the strike. Nice to see the stepped leader/return strike detail slowed down - excellent!
we had a big earth quake on my brithday, the one before last anyway. I thought someone was behind me shaking my chair for the frist few seconds before it shook bad
For a start, there are no offices in Beetham Tower, just a hotel, a bar and a lot of apartments. If you're going to post something at least get it right
the very top of the building is a penthouse owned by the architect himself! the top half are apartments n a hilton hotel in the bottom half. That's certainly an early morning wake up call!
The top two floors are one big apartment owned by Ian Simpson the Architect he has trees up there imported from Italy I think, the first 23 floors are the Hilton Hotel with the Cloud Bar on the 23rd Istayed on the 21st floor in June its a great Hotel.the rest of the floors are apartments.I have seen people absailing down cleaning windows (not enough money in the world to do that job)

Lightning strikes can be cloud to ground, ground to cloud, or cloud to cloud..
Some strikes have what are called leaders that start at the cloud and also the ground and meet in the middle.
You cant see these leaders with the naked eye but they are there.
Sometime starting from the ground up.

the very top of the building is a penthouse owned by the architect himself! the top half are apartments n a hilton hotel in the bottom half. That's certainly an early morning wake up call!
