  • Thumbs up if listening to classic rock radio back in the 80s brought you there

  • One of the best hooks of all times....We've all had to "ride the storm out" at one time or another..."not missin' a thing".....

  • A whole bunch better than the pathetically bad Kevin Cronin. He. Is. The. Worst. Vocalist. In. The. World. Bar. None.

  • Definitive music for the ages, priceless...

  • REO TWO is still the best LP!

  • No Kevin, That's a plus!!!! Gary is the best!

  • Windy...strong thunderstorms during the evening will give way to partly cloudy skies after midnight. Damaging winds and large hail with some storms. Low 43F. Winds SSW at 25 to 35 mph. Chance of rain 80%.Weather for Sikeston, MO

  • so i just bought the reo cd, and im a little disappointed that they had the live version of this song instead of the original, i love this version, althought the live is good too...but nothing like the original!

  • Supernatural, thanks

  • luv the music they use on Supernatural! It's like wow I forgot liked that song so much!

  • SETTING THE SUPERNATURAL SONGS EVER!!!

  • hahah_yeah thanks to superantural!))

  • my wine bottle is low.

  • daaamn supernatural really made me like many songs i didn't even know!!!!!

  • Thumbs up if you knew this song before some just relesed tv show

  • Comment removed

  • you have no idea what supernatural is, do you?

  • @Ryagful actually i have watched every episode but what i was saying is you should know these songs without it. Even thought it is really good series this music should be know by all mankind

  • Supernatural is like a weekly musical lesson :D

  • @thegilmanstreet Well some know these classic golden era forgotten songs without modern epic tv shows...

  • @Glamstarr90 whatever dude, the point is to know them and don't forget them.

  • thumps up if you came here alone because you like this song

  • SUPERNATURAL :D

  • Thumbs up if supernatural brought u here XD

  • @kvogunner WTB Supernatural OST discography lol

  • @kvogunner

love supernatural taught me alot of good music

  • @countryboy1776 yeahh they have, theres so many good music out there thats unknown and never get played just because they're not commercial! i wish i would born during the 60s and grown up throughout the 70 80 and 90 to real good music!

  • @kvogunner Best serie ever! ;)

  • I believe Kevin Cronin is going to leave REO Speedwagon, so he can pursue a solo career. Former Styx lead singer Dennis DeYoung would join the band REO Speedwagon.

  • @drrckyee That has the makings of a gawd-awful combination. Like Sammy Hagar when he joined Van Halen.

  • What I like about this record is the 'pompous ass' in the band, fired Cronin Then, had to fire the new guy and had to beg Cronin to come back. It's Music 101!! The lead singer/ songwriter is the franchise! He gets people fired, he doesn't get fired.

  • murphy is the voice.....of reo

  • this is one fav song when i was a teen i seen them live

  • I first heard this song while traveling over the rockies on my way to california in 1983. SWEET MEMORIES

  • Also, the original album picture was identical to this, with Cronin on the cover instead of this guy.

  • The actual original studio version had Cronin on lead vocals. He was booted from the band and all the vocals on the album were re-recorded. This original version, with Cronin on vocals, can be found on the Decade 1970-1980 compilation. And no...the live versions, any of them, blow the studio version away.

  • Better than "live" version for sure.

  • Best version ever! Had this album when it first came out. Didn't like the fact that Kevin Cronin didn't perform on it, only wrote most of the material though.

  • The "LIVE" version on the "You Get What You Play For" is MUCH better. I have this one, but prefer the LIVE version and I'm sure everyone else does too. The origonal studio track was too slow.

  • This song is perfect for when I'm flying in Battlefield 3.

  • Me and my daddy used to listen to this. Reminds me of the times we spent together. I'm 11 and listen to this... is that normal??? I don't care if it's normal or not!! REO SPEEDWAGON IS AWESOME!!!!!!

  • The Rockies are OK, but the prairie is alright too.

  • Woot this song is awesome!

  • The only version that I like

  • @ckschmidt4854 I agree, live versions don't give the same sound.

  • definatly better

  • thankyou needed the original!!! well done..

  • love REO, they changed my life in the early 80's. they helped me stay out of prision. i found love in my heart, and was'nt afraid to show it. they helped make me a great father that i am today. Thank You REO. God bless you. ps. i will sing your songs to my grandchildren.

  • @kenzie09bieber lmao

  • @kenzie09bieber

REO also changed my life too right around the "High Infidelity" album. It spoke to me man, IT SPOKE TO ME. I was wise enough to listen to that "heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who. . . ." meant for me to not do anything stupid to get thrown in prison.

  • the guy singing isnt is name mike murphy, wonder if he still singing?

  • what happened to REO SPEEDWAGON happened to a lot of other bands of the 70's...the 80's...they tried too damn hard to keep their fans...and fucked up

  • I agree with the person who said that Kevin Cronin sent this band into teenebobber hell

  • I remember this so well, anyone who thinks this song sucks is out of there blanking minds.

  • This song was also good for hurricane katrina back in 2006!

  • This is exactly what I am doing right now

  • Ya this is THE song for Irene!!!

  • this is not the Original version. the actual original recording was with Kevin Cronin on lead vocals.Just after the record was pressed Kevin and Gary (Richrath) got into another fight .this lead to Cronin being kicked out of the band. They quickly replaced Cronin with Murphy and re-dubed the vocals.only about 1,00 copies of the original version ever made it out to the stores.I have been looking for the Orginal Kevin Cronin version for well over 20 years.

  • Riding the hurricane out!

  • @nholt I played this song cuz of hurriane irene! I hope nobody gets hurt.

  • @TheJamesmonkey I played it for the same reason! I'm saving Maureen McGovern The Morning After for tomorrow.

  • @66jwm This song is a great song for any reason!!! But a very great song for hurricane Irene!!!! Thumbs up if you agree!!!

  • @TheJamesmonkey a great song for tornadoes coming through KY also :)

  • I never heard this version. I like the one with Kevin on lead vocals though.

  • KEVIN WHO???????????? LOVE LIVE RICHRATH!

  • @spaggs64 I assume you're talking about the guitar playing and that you know Michael Bryan Murphy is the singer on this version.

  • @PAjeannie66 YEP, I KNOW....THANX.

  • Love the live version, but this studio version is a rarity to hear and I'm glad you put it up.

  • My only compaint with this studio cut is that it doesn't have Kevin Cronin. Without him, it just ain't the same.

  • This is from their third album, and their best. This is the original version, and the best. PLEASE play at maximum volume. To the youngsters out there: I am sorry that you missed Rock & Roll.

  • Thanks for sharing a classic, 'original' version...you have good taste, my friend!

  • I just found 'Harley-Davidson Motorcycles: Road Songs, Vol. 1' dumpster-diving on CD & I after I saw that this song was on it, I popped this song into my CD player & cranked the volume all the way the fuck up.

  • The best by far!!

  • so Classic.....!!

  • A Classic.

  • Mike Murphy replaced Kevin Cronin for this album in 1973. Cronin left the band briefly for creative differences. Eventually he would return and sing this on their live album. Good song regardless of who sings it.

  • Love this version!.

  • I actually heard this version on the radio just yesterday.

  • I always enjoyed this more than the overdone live version. I used to play it in my band & tried to hit every drum beat just like the original.

  • Thanks for uploading this. I used to have it on casette tape but the tape is long gone. Could never find this version anywhere I looked.

  • I have this album, and I have to say, I think it was one of the most poorly produced albums I have ever heard! How is it that the previous album, REO TWO, had better sound? I was only 12 years old when I got this, and even I could tell Gary Richrath's brilliant guitar work wasn't coming through the speakers well! The only other rock guitarist who wasn't given his justice by a producer was Lee Pickens from Bloodrock! "Bloodrock 2" was poorly produced as well!

  • Whatever became of THIS REO singer? He didn't seem to have much charisma and a weak voice, but they did keep him around for three years before Cronin returned (that's probably 3 years in the desert of no success!)

  • @notfragile33 What I've read somewhere is that Gary and Mike Murphy hated each other in 1975 to the point where they weren't in the same studio when recording the "This Time We Mean It" album.

  • @MikeRambo Well, in that case, I find it amazing that they even lasted that long! And that was their worst period! Like I always said, bad feelings among band members, produces bad music!

  • who's pumped for electric forest???

  • HEARD IT FROM A FRIEND.THAT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE

  • Evansville, Indiana 1975. Outdoors on a warm summer night.

  • what are some of their other great songs from the seventies?

  • Yep. I had this album and wore it out. :)

  • You dont have to scream to jam, THIS ROCKS

  • The original wow! I haven't heard this simple LPs went by the way side. I still love it. Saw them when they did a live show for an album in St.Louis, MO back in the 70's. Live - You Get What you Play for. Awesome show. This was my first intro to REO, so it's a special song!!!

  • Oh my!! I can't believe that there are others out there that remember the original!! Fantastic memories, thanks for sharing this.

  • So did I! Great Show, Elvin Bishop and another band or two as well. REO was on Top as far as I was concerned. Cold night. Wine and some good friends.

  • I saw this line up at the Denver Colliseum. Killer

  • I prefer this studio version.

  • @drno2150 I was a Freshman when I saw the One-Eyed Jacks in Kankakee, IL '65-'66. Playing after them, The Jefferson Airplane. Concert was played in the local H.S. gym. Everyone walked out of the concert after the Jacks played. Wasn't impressed with the Jacks. I came to see Jefferson Airplane. After the concert, I walked down onto the stage and talk with Grace Slick, Jorma Kaukonen, Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, Jack Cassady and Spencer Dryden. We talked about the Vietnam War. 1awesome night!

  • kevin cronan ruined this song. this version is really good

  • Not fair to compare to the live version, but I wish the would play this on emore often on the radio.

  • Kevin cronin made it classic!

  • live version>studio version

  • This a semi-original version. Remember Kevin recorded it before Mke Murphy. Anyway, I'm sure this version will bring back great memories to those of you who lived that era. (I was a toddler back then).

  • I love this album

  • This is so badass cool! I remember listening to this on the radio when I was in the 8th grade back in the 1970's! Incredible!

  • Neil Darghty(spelling?) is THE only original member left(keyboards)!@rocknrolldaddio, not too sure of some early names that played with REO, some sorta fog I guess!lol

  • I think this singer went on to join Starcastle, a YEs sound-alike, but nevertheless, a cool band. Terry Lutrell?

  • @FlashYes1 No, this was their third lead singer after Terry Lutrell and Kevin Cronin, Mike Murphy. He sang on two more albums after this, then Cronin returned.

  • AWESOME. Awe inspiring

  • 32 years after I first heard of REO Speedwagon, today I hear the original version of one of their best songs for the first time (if I have heard this before, I wasn't aware that it wasn't Cronin singing.) While I always liked Kevin Cronin's vocal on the overplayed live version, Mike Murphy's constrained vocal helps to showcase the interesting instrumentals of this great song.

  • Best Reo song ever. Dare I say....without Kevin Cronin?

  • This version was recorded when Kevin Cronin had left the band for a short while. It is rarely heard on classic rock stations, and it is rumored that the band surpressed it in favor of the later studio recording with Kevin singing. The song was very popular locally as it was alleged to have told the story of the band being caught in a blizzard somewhere in the mountains above Boulder CO.

  • Kids: Its Mike Murphy from the "One Eyed Jacks" singin' one the all time best midwest singers He ended up singing for "Billy Vera and the Beaters" Lest we forget...

  • @drno2150 It's therefore no coincidence that Bruce Hall is now REO's bassist - having played with One Eyed Jacks. This would also explain his writing credit on the "Lost in a Dream" album.

  • i love this song have this baby play loud as you drive down a highway??yeah baby!!

  • Great version -- classic rock of the 1970's in action

  • This authority on classic rock of the 1970's -- listening to 4-Way Street & The Who's "Happy Jack" == just 6 years after birth in 1964.... Such a foundation says this original studio version of THE REO Speedwagon most famous Anthem.... IS a fine example of a very misunderstood BUT very solid classic rock band in MY Book... what happened in the 1980's cannot be totally blamed on one member's vocal style... Lou Gramm and Mick Jones found a way -- just like Robby Steinhardt and Steve Walsh.. TK REO

  • Kevin Cronin sent this hard rocking band to teenebop hell ! ! ! This is the best version of REO SPEEDWAGON by far.

  • @DownFallingUp1 in your opinion of course. i will agree, they ended up in teenebop heaven, but they had their good years with mr cronin also. up until hi infidelity flopped its fat ass down on the airwaves. lol. (logged in on our daughter's name.) :)

  • I'll take this studio version over the live version any day!

  • @guyatacomputer no way dude, the live version is complete kick ass

  • @nolan7675 True maaaaaannnn

  • SIU Edwardsville Mississippi River Festival. HIGH school summers. I'm 52! They rocked

  • I saw them in concert at an outdoor show a couple years ago and it was pouring rain... when they ended the show with this, it was like the most epic thing EVER!

  • This is the best version of this song!

  • Masterpiece this song will be sure to stand the test of time after all i'm 18 and i freaking love it!!!

  • The First Album of theirs I owned. It good to hear that Original Sound and singer from this Single!!!! 10 Stars!!!!!

  • That's Mike Murphy on keyboards and vocals...great rock sound...

  • hell yeah

  • riding the storm out is second nature,,, cold ice snow mud rain thunder ,,, pain and suffer.

  • riding the storm out is second nature

  • According to my parents, this was the first actual song I've ever heard in my life. They played it the day after I was born.

  • I use to love listening to this song when we had some kick ass snow blizzards in the Midwest.

  • The original is definitely better than Cronin's version. ...way better!

  • Richrath made REO the best with the great guitar riffs. Golden Country from Rithrath did some of the best guitar work I have heard recorded. F*&^cking Rock Dude !!!

  • Yes. Finally, the original version!!!!

  • I never understood why they always played the other REALLY lame version on all the rock stations here. Thanks! Been many years since I heard this!!!!

  • when i grew up with this some ppl thought journey was the best band...reo was

  • @sothis48 either way theyre both great bands!

  • This was their best album, then they went lovie, dovie songs. Sad. Could have been a better rock group.

  • i havent listened to all o freospeedwagons songs yet i know alot of artsist im 15 but i must learn evry classic evry lyrics and name of song to each group and there names i must i want to learn all the classic music the musi cof today is trash

  • It is rare to hear this version on classic rock stations. The version usually played is the one with Kevin Cronin performing the lead vocals. I suspect the band had it suppressed.

The original video of the Hi Infidelity tour which was released on CBS Fox and filmed at the old Mc Nichols arena in Denver also disappeared. When I asked Kevin Cronin about it after an REO concert, he claimed not to know it was no longer available.

  • @351460 You can find this video (Live in denver) at maximumsound dott org!!!

  • @ExDemocrat64 Thank you for the information. Are you referring to an earlier video filmed in Denver? I have a copy of the original CBS/Fox video that was made at the old Mc Nichols arena in 1981 during the Hi Infedelity tour. My friends and I were in the second row when they filmed the audience.

  • @351460 No, this is a dvd-(version) of the same CBS/FOX video shot in 1981. It's not digital but decsent quality-(I have one), I also still have my old vhs of the CBS/FOX video. COOL to chat with someone who was actually there!!!

  • @ExDemocrat64 In the video, just before they perform "Ridin the Storm Out" there is a brief shot of the audience. The noticeable blonde girl is my ex-girlfriend, Josie, who went on to become a very accomplished jazz violinist and currently fronts Perpetual Motion, a modern jazz group that performs in the Denver area.

  • @351460 Is this the same young woman holding her arm up 'just before' Tough Guy's?

  • @ExDemocrat64 I will get back on that as soon as I check out the video again--its been a while.

  • I saw them in Davenport Ia back in 81 it was hot ! the girl with me hot (looking) I wonder what she looks like now. it was great to grow up in the late 70"s and early 80"s

  • We saw these guys at Anaheim Stadium is So. Cal. My lead player was commenting on how cool the drummer was dressed. That man could have been out there in muddy burlap and still be cool. He was a metronome that day and every time I've seen him since. Cal Worthington was the MC (local car dealer). Somebody didn't like him to much and hit him in the chest with a large piece of fruit from the stands. What an arm.

  • This is the better version of Riidin the storm Out

I have very sensitive hearing & I can't take listening to live renditions of songs at all1

  • put on the cut offs jump in the el camino crank reo grab some beers and hit the quarry......ah the good ole days

  • Great song cranked in the dorm room at Michigan State back in the '70s. Saw these guys play back-up (?) to Steely Dan for $8 (they sold the tickets at half price!) at the Masonic Temple Theater in Detroit in 1975. They kicked ass, including Steely Dan's.

  • @pagonite The very idea that you think a bunch of no talent retards like REO Speedwagon (who only had one good song, this one) would "kick the ass of Steely Dan" -- one of the the greatest bands in history -- reveals that you are a slobbering, ferocious fucking retard and a proudly stupid member of the Lowest Common Denominator. A goddamn fucking disgrace., that kind of ignorance and lack of taste

  • @MusicWriter1965 Can we be mature? Please? You don't have to go on a rant just because someone has a different opinion than you. It's all a matter of taste. I like REO better than Steely Dan, but you like Steely Dan better than REO. That's all fine and dandy, but you don't have to go around insulting people simply because they think differently. Act your age, not your shoe size, me youth.

  • @MusicWriter1965 I agree with rosar0980... Be mature!

  • @MusicWriter1965 Plus if they are "no talent retards" I dare you to make a song and it has to have more hits then REO speedwagon's best song. If you can do better than you win. And I wanna hear the song!!!!!!!!!!

  • 1000 thanks for this rare piece!

  • to me theres no old school or new school, theres just great rock & roll

  • "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[f] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.[

  • @1ricky77333

Wake up dude. Humans created the idea of god.

  • @TheMILESRUSSELL Hear ! Hear !

  • @1ricky77333 Man Inveted God as a way of controlliong other human beings So ,let's not bring religion in to this converstaion

  • Wow....I never heard this version. I only heard the live version that I am guessing most people heard.

    This is great

  • I saw REO perform back in 1984 on Harriet Island in St. Paul, Mn. fun fun times,,,,, great concert....Kevin Cronin sang until his voice went horse....LOL!! I think he fed off our energy.

This is a great song. Brings back some good memories of the early 80's for me.

  • this is the best version ever of this song. kevin earned a lot of respect, but this lead singer did the song far better than kevin.

  • dat piano

  • When reo speedwagon was great, early 70s

  • The live version had a whole lot more energy. I'm not a big fan of Mike Murphy's vocals either. Very nasally without a whole lot of push. Very "talk vocalish."

  • @freepressright you do know his vocals on this album, excepting Gary's turn on vocals - "find my fortune",another great song from this album - were initally thought to have wiped Kevin's vocals on the masters...which turned out not to be true:see "Son Of A Poor Man" on either The First Decade of Rock And Roll or The Essential REO Speedwagon for how the song sounded with Kevin.

  • This album stands the test of time. Lost in a Dream was an underrated album, too.
