  • @hiyadroogs you can not possibly know enough to state why Mario did not sing the high Bb at the end. He had high notes aplenty right to the end of his career so I believe your statement to be false.

  • So sexy and macho!

  • Can anyone imagine waltzing into an opera house todays and hearing a performance like this? I think that the most severe critic on this thread would be overwhelmed with excitement at a live performance like this--just the the audience was.

  • Questo non e' canto. "E SCULTURA!!!!

    VIVA MDM !!!!

  • MdM; The most attractive, sexiest Opera voice ever

  • 7:25

  • Mario Del Monaco! The definition of a grand Italian tenor...better than Pavarotti and Domingo....the size and power of his voice matched with his strong stage presence and charisma makes him one of all time best. I never saw him perform, born too late but he lives on in recordings and Youtube. What a magnificent voice! And he looks and sounds every bit like a Roman warrior...

  • @OperaMystery80 Pavarotti was essentially a lyric tenor with some spinto facillity later in his career. Domingo is a spinto voice with a short top. Del Monaco however was a true tenore robusto which was at its best in heavy declamatory parts. This type of robust voice is ill suited to the high lying bel canto parts that suited Pavs voice. Habitual & continuous full throated use of the voice in the upper middle tends to tire the top voice, which is why Mario omitted the high note here.

  • PAZZESCO INARRIVABILE GARNDIOSO SCULTOREO MONOLITICO

  • Such a shouter!

  • @Telltaleheart79 What, are you just learning about this thing called singing? Shouting? Somebody has be dramatic. You do know what dramatic singing is all about right?

  • @rovingdesertfox Yes I do know. I also know that he was arrogant enough to try to drown out all other singers such as Callas, as well as the orchestra. Even in duets it was usually a case of him trying to steal the show.

  • @Telltaleheart79 That's the way life goes. Those singers then had the option to not sing with him from then on.

So, I understand better where you were coming from. Thanks.

  • @Telltaleheart79 True,DelMonaco's ego was perhaps as big as any other singer.Gigli Lauri Volpi Callas.MDM claims that Callas held a high note in a duet a little longer than she should have,so he retaliated.Callas really became annoyed with him& i'm not sure if they ever sang together again,MDM&Callas did an Aida in Mexico City which was fantastic.,so what ever competition they had going on, resulted in some great performances.I don't have any pity for orchestras(VonKarajan)a little loud,Continue

  • @Telltaleheart79 As Corelli had said,DelMonaco tried to sing softer&was not successful in doing so.When MDM1st came on the scene, his wife had told him ,he cud not be heard beyond the 3rd row.MDM went to Mellochi&together they built the voice or sound that you dislike so much.Although he is impressively loud here, There are other recordings on YT where he was able to modulate his voice.Forza &Ballo arias. If you don't care for him that's fine. But perhaps some info may soften your dislike.Enjoy

  • @sugarbist Thank you very much for the info. I was not aware of the background information.

  • @Telltaleheart79 Your welcome

  • Very compelling performance. Even though he dodged the high C, it's probably all for the best. He even gets a Flavio able to sing the Gs without sounding tepid.

Del Monaco makes singing tenor sounds more masculine than any other male vocal range. :D

  • Dio santo.....!!!!

  • Who had a bigger, louder and more powerful voice Mario Del Monaco or Giacomo Lauri Volpi?

  • @hibyeeee2 LAURI VOLPI HAD A LYRIC VOICE WITH DRAMATIC IMPACT THAT COULD TRAVEL THROUGHOUT THE OPERA HOUSE.DEL MONACO HAD A VERY LOUD DRAMATIC VOICE THAT DID THE SAME HOWEVER I GIVE VOLPI THE EDGE BECAUSE OF THE CONSISTANT VERBRATO.ITS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT ANYONE COULD BE LOUDER THAN DELMONACO . WHO HIT HARDER DEMPSEY OR MARCIANO. THE POINT IS THAT BOTH TENORS REALLY HAD THE ABILITY TO THRILL AUDIENCES EVERY TIME THEY APPEARED. THEY WERE VOCALLY PHENOMENAL

  • @sugarbist I agree although I think I like Volpi better. I love his fast vibrato and his technique better. Also I like how his voice wasn't as dark as a dramatic Tenor's but was just as loud and just as powerful. I don't think we'll know who was louder unless we actually see them perform but I think they were equally loud and powerful but Volpi's voice wasn't as dark and his technique and coloratura was better.

  • @hibyeeee2 this is a little confusing.Del Monaco is my favorite although i think they are both terrifc.Del Monaco with the larger voice ,But voplis vibrations extended further , possibly more than any other singer.listen to his A TE O CARA.its really unbelievable. He appears in a tuxedo in concert form. Thanks for answering me and enjoy.

  • Who was conducting? Was the Norma Elinor Ross?

  • perfect

  • does anyone know who the other tenor is in this video? This guy is better than most of our wimpy tenors singing today.

  • 1967. Mario era in declino ma aveva ancora in gola 20 tenori!

  • Boy the sound he produced.

sei "perfezionista"? purtroppo devi ascoltare Grigolo,Alvarez,Kaufmann,

    Villazon,Florez...che pena.Coraggio caro.

    Ciao sei carino/a.

No,grazie!

NESSUNO come lui !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UN FINALE DA BRIVIDI !!! GRAZIE ! GRAZIE ! GRAZIE !

  • Always loved this tenor and I agree there is no one who comes even close to him..singers today sound alike to me, perhaps one a little lighter then the other.

Although I must be fair in saying that every singer in their own right are good and more then good. Each must be given individual respect and to compare is not fair. It is also not nice to tear down a singer because he or she just does not appeal to ones ears and liking. They made it! I prefer some singers over others MDM is one!

  • pazzesco inarrivabile

  • THIS WAS AMAZING...WHAT A GREAT VOICE....DID HE SANG WAGNER OR ONLY ITALIAN OPERA ? i LOVE DEL MONACO...ONE OF THE GREAT TENORS OF THE 20TH CENTURY

  • At 52 and after a devastating car crash MDM is back in prime shape. No tenor before or after has been able to match him for sheer sound. Can you imagine how he would intimidate the little tenors singing today. :)

Strepitoso!!!!!!

  • amazing

  • Hey, that Flavio isn't bad. Please, who is it? Thanks.

  • The Flavio is none other than the great

    Jon Vickers.

  • no it is Mario Guccia

  • @coloraturafan

he's surprisingly good; sign of those times i guess....nothing like looking at those bills and seeing half a dozen legends.....

  • @strhg1 LOL well he does look a lot like Vickers but his italian is too idiomatic to be good ol'Jon. ;)))

  • @strhg1 Sorry, but that Flavio is not Jon Vickers. It's somebody entirely different. I don't know who. But it is not Vickers. Candidly, I'm very, very familiar with Vickers' voice and singing, and that Flavio is simply not Vickers. No way. Your information is plainly in error.

  • mostruoso!!!

  • elendrea : bravo !!!! Del Monaco ,sublime ,insuperabile,immortale , grazie !

  • Che fiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaato!

  • That last word 7:25 to 7:45- WOW

he was getting his money's worth out of his lungs that's for sure =P

  • This is not shouting. It is also not Mozart. There are basically two kinds of reviewers, those that complain about this and that and those that actually have heard him sing in an opera house. This is late in his career and the high note at the end of the cabaletta is transposed down. Listen to the much earlier live recording with Callas and conducted by Votto. Wow. w3

  • Got any links etc to that version?

  • strepitoso

  • MDM sang heroic parts, with his Pollione, we get the character, he's musical & it's thrilling! In opera, voices need to project into the acoustics of an opera house even Fleming and Pavarotti have admitted that it is screaming and shouting in tune; the singer tries to do it as beautiful & meaningful as possible & they both have done plenty of floating and spinning out sounds but in dramatic moments with dramatic parts like this, and orchestration as dense as this, it better be loud.

    Grazie-

  • il padre di tenori the king

  • "My GOD!!!" This is the greatest dramatic tenor voice I've ever heard ...period!!!

  • DAMN RIGHT!!! No one (today) compares to del Monaco!!!

  • giji

  • Mario's Granada album is amazing.

  • 04:27 no sustenta la nota grave

  • ALUCINANTE!

  • does anyone know who the flavio is? i know it can't be, but i swear he reminds me of vickers. most NORMA's are lucky to have a tenor that good for pollione.

  • Mario Guccia.

  • Why is there nothing to be found about this man on the internet? Where can I learn some more about him?

  • Comment removed

  • This is what you call "park and Bark" at its best. I love that there is no nuance in his singing. The sound is incredible and clearly he knows this in this performance. More bows, please!!

  • whatever minuses there are here, this is very late del monaco. if there was a single tenor on earth that could do this today it might get me back into the opera house.

  • A good aria beautifully sang by one of the best ever.

  • Mamma mia.

Saluti

  • Del Monaco è eccezionale in quest'opera. Bravo!

  • Love it!A blazing flame of sound. Subtle? Finessed? Forget it. He sings with passion and drama, and you know what? You can hear him, unlike many tenors in today's operas.

  • Well I don't know which opera houses you go to, but I really sick to the teeth of this nonsense about people not being able to hear singers today. I've been going to the opera for over 30 years and I've been able to hear at least 99% of the singers, if they have proplems they are not roblems of volume. BTW this is Bellini, not Mascagni

  • Your remark verges on rudeness, but I will only say that there are plenty of voices that I can barely hear and then those that I dont' want to hear.

  • Baritenore...

  • Del Monaco in this video is full of passion and dramatic point....great tenor and actor!!! Corelli was very good with strong voice but he was also had a piano voice...grat tenors....Del Monaco, Corelli was a great Pollione.

  • He was by the way singing it the way he should and I heard him do Otello in 59, terrific dramatic tenor with a BiGGER voice then Corelli and no he could not sing piano like corelli but he also did not have some of the bad habits franco had and early in 1946 I have a live Ballo where the voice is very beautiful and far more lyric then later Corelli was more a spinto in some ways and Del Monaco a dramatic, very different sound but in the house MDM was great to hear, Corelli recorded better.

  • this is the sort of singing which I am surprised does not lead to riots and mass furniture destruction, and I mean this in the BEST possible way. the man was so possessed by the drama of the role...... I would have given a great deal to have been present when this happened. Many thanks for posting this! It is the GLORY made flesh.

  • he deserves every second of applause.Something to tell your grandchildren about ,if you were lucky enough to be there!

  • Mario Del Monaco e veramente Un Dio!

  • Braaaaaavo Maestro!

How could I find this performance's DVD?

  • Hai perfettamente ragione...toglierei solo dall'elenco Corelli...

  • Who is the other tenor?

  • Mario Guccia

  • Geniale Mario!!!

  • Monaci was not young in that time (529, but he is is excellent disposition. he is an enigmatic actor. Thanks for it!

  • bravo tenore.... what a huge heroic sound

  • bravo tenore..... what a huge heroic sound....

  • Jfadavo,

I have a power trip? How can I have a power trip over videos. I provide these for everyone's pleasure, not for any self gain.

However, if you don't enjoy what I have to say, and you think I am on a power trip, then DON'T watch my videos. Wow that was such a simple solution, I am surprised an intelligent person like yourself didn't come up with it on your own.

    With my warmest regaurds.

  • Where is Pollione? The way he is singing is in contrast with the words. No modulations whatsoever. "Quella ver-gi-ine ce-e-le-ste" is really funny.

  • Though I can marvel at how thrilling and visceral Del Monaco's voice is, for me it ruins the performance when I don't see much nuance to the character, not to mention when he has to hold his final notes for an interminable (though impressive) amount of time, and subsequently take a bow in the middle of a performance...tacky

I'm sure I'll get negative remarks and thumbs down for posting this when I see the comment history, but it's my opinion after all. At least I don't resort to cattiness! lol

  • Au contraire my friend! No negative remarks on this end because of your obvious praise for the impressiveness of the performance despite your inherent yearning for the distinctly personal touch in the character.

  • LOL...you won't get anything negative from me. I completely agree. There's something about holding notes longer than anyone else (see the Act 1 trio), and trying to be louder than anyone else (not to mention the STUPID bow) that just screams bad colleague. I think singers have to have a healthy ego, but that's way too much. Loud and louder. Otello sining Norma (although I think Otello benefits from nuance as well).

  • Never mind few unsinged notes. Such drammatic intensity is never heard on stage (of course that MDM in 1967. isn't the same as in 1955. - legendary year with M. Callas in their antologic Normas) and never more will be repeated. Amen

  • Exactly the point! You can't find this kind of voice , nor this kind of drama in today's singers.(and somebody is worried about "subtle" sounds?) Del Monaco doesn't sound as good as in those awesome Norma's w/ Callas, but he still sounds amazing for someone who had been singing for almost 20 years professionally. i

  • Imagine that sound in the theatre...I've never heard such an instrumental sound from any other tenor. Subtlety is great but I often miss the effect of a voice like this. I would easily ignore subtlety for an evening to experience Del Monaco's sound.

  • You are right. Who cares about "subtle" sounds in an opera like Norma, this isn't La Boheme after all.

  • I still care for subtlety but I wouldn't mind forgetting about it in order to enjoy Del Monaco.

  • thank you very very very much dear coloraturafan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • coloraturafan,¿can you post "Oh,rimenbranza"

    por favor ? Gracias.

  • This is a perfect example of what I always said about Del Monaco. Loud and LOUDER. This is absolutley not bel canto singing. It's a little vulgar actually. I wish he would have had a bit of subtlety (like Corelli, who was just as loud but could file the voice down to a whisper). But, that said, there's no denying that there is POWER here. In spades. He left out the C and the 2 B flats tho.

  • i agree 100%.

  • LOL. How juvenile. I'm entitled to my opinion, and I'll voice it whether you like it or not. Pressure does NOT equal good singing. It just equals LOUD singing. I would never WANT to sing like this. All he does is YELL. Plenty of GREAT singers have mastered subtlety, whether your little brain can grasp that or not. Personal attacks on someone you know nothing about because of a differing opinion only make you look like an ass. Grow up and get a life. Del Monaco doesn't need you to defend him.

  • I will admit that del Monaco was never my favorite on audio recordings. That was a long time ago. Now the more I listed to him, and now see him, the more I love everything about him. He is the total package!

  • And you would know my technique is lacking HOW, since you've never met me and have no idea who I am? My career is not as a singer anyhow, so it's really a moot point. You don't have to have a career as a singer to know something about how the voice works. Opera by its very nature is subjective; you like who you like. Incidentally, you talk about my opinion, but what makes yours so much more valid than anyone else's? And as for the flower arranging? If that's a crack about me being gay, fuck you.

  • BeauTenor,

I can't agree with you more! You DO NOT have to be a singer to have an appreciation for the art. I am not a singer, but I am such a fan of opera. And yes, it is a very subjective subject we all have favorites for differnt reasons, that's what makes opera so wonderful.

  • Billthaxton,

How rude! I make a statement agreeing with BeauTenor and you retaliate against me. I have seen this way too much on youtube. Believe me you are NOT unique. What an arrogant person you are.

  • Billthaxton,

Your comments have gone from rude to funny. I can not even take you seriously. You are absurd.

  • See what you did billthaxon? Coloraturafan feels like he has to to take a break from all these fabulous postings he's been working so hard to show us, all because YOU'RE acting like a STUPID PRICK. Why don't you take your venom and go somewhere else. We come here to enjoy the music, not to be harassed by some jack off little BITCH who thinks he's so much better than everyone else. You might try showing a little gratitude, but I guess that's too hard. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. NO ONE WANTS YOU HERE.

  • You're welcome to...an open forum means just that. People are welcome to express their opinions...you don't have to like it or agree, and incidentally, it had nothing at all to do with you.

  • Unfortunately BeauTenor some people do not have opinions, and when they are challenged on an intellectual ground they can only bark and insult. Chapeau bas to you for standing up for coloraturafan, whose uploads have always stood for style and beauty.

  • Some posters here are like small boils in the bum. Insignificant but highly irritating.

  • Who asked you? I'm usually very agreeable and fair, but the fact is that some jerk might ruin it for everyone else because of his crap. Sorry, but that pisses me off. A BASIC rule is, don't piss on the guy providing your enjoyment. These vids are a gift, and they should be treated that way. Sorry if you don't see it that way, but it's the truth. This is an open forum, whether you like it or not. If you don't like my language, don't read my post. Simple as that.

  • CSMJR91090,

I can only laugh at you. You have no business at all making judgement of me. I don't owe you a damn thing. Why don't you do me a favor and leave me and my videos alone.

This is the kind of crap that I am tired of. People making comments like yours CSMjr91090.

What a little person you are to think that one person bothered me that much. Rather it is many people, and over a long period of time. All I can say is you sir are an ass.

  • Merci my friend....and I apologize for my foul mouth. I got a little carries away.

  • Funny how you can come here and criticze Del Monaco, a great singer wheather you like it or not, and yet I don't remember any videos of YOU singing? Why is that? Perhaps you are nothing more than a keyboard commando who makes their living by attacking great singers? You don't have to worry about wanting to sing this way because you couldn't if you tried. Del Monaco was great and it would be better if you just kept repeating that to get it into your thick skull.

  • I don't have an opera career, mainly because I don't have the ego for it. I'll say it again though, I'd never WANT to sing like this. Just because you sing everything FFF does NOT mean you're a great singer. You're just LOUD. And BTW, if you read my posts you'll find I don&
