  • Ever since Regan, Republicans have gotten crazier and crazier.

  • Bill Maher spits fire!

  • What happened to the Republicans, that they care more about my sexuality than supporting the working man, which was their goal a mere 100+ years ago?

It's really quite evil, that people care more about what goes on with me and my girlfriend than economic prosperity, or socially limited government, or fair judicial practice. These are the issues I vote on, and yet I can't find a politician that supports my views...

  • @LichQueenKathie This country is fucked up! And education is going down still.

  • "Greed is Good" never was true. "Enlightened Greed" is good, and the adage "When the market is scared, be greedy, and when the market is greedy, be scared" is still true.

  • abba did 'money money money'

  • @Jellowlink "must be funny, in the rich mans world"

  • "All that serves labor serves the nation. All that harms is treason. If a man tells you he trusts America, yet fears labor, he is a fool. There is no America without labor, and to fleece the one is to rob the other."

    -Abraham Lincoln

    .

"Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration."

    -Abraham Lincoln

  • This was posted on my birthday, it stumped me a bit. Ah, the weed, the weed.

  • In capitalism some win and some lose. Right now in the U.S. its more like one wins rest fucked.

  • @wangsta25 True, but the basic idea in capitalism is that we cannot go full blown capitalism. No economic model actually works properly, capitalism just happens to be the least bad one. When few wins and the rest are fucked, it means we are straying too close to pure capitalism.

Even since it beginning of most society it has always been about keeping an eye on capitalism. Keep it under control with proper regulations (healthy dose of socialism) have been how it always worked.

  • @Neosaigo No thats not true, if you look at our history we've only gotten more and more regulations over time while conditions got worse and worse. While regulations as a theory are not a bad thing the regulators create the barriers to entry that concentrate the wealth with the big corporations and keep down the middle class. A free market is always best for both the consumer and the middle class.

  • @MFINN23 "we've only gotten more and more regulations over time while conditions got worse and worse"

This is a libertarian fairy tale. Go back to the dawn of the industrial revolution when there was next to no regulation and virtually no middle class. Read the horror stories that working people had to endure. Then look at what we got today. It's substantially better. It's unarguably better. Labor and market regulations have solved scores of problems and the economy better for it.

  • @jessemaurais Like I said regulations in theory are not a bad thing, but it is much better if standards are brought about by the free market. When there are government contracts it only hurts the free market and thus the economy.

  • Somewhere in the U.S. today, a little kid is being taught that he should share with people and treat everyone with respect. If little Billy can learn that at age 3, why can't the rest of America remember it? Whatever happened to "sharing is caring"?

  • Humans are greedy by nature, in a free market (which we don't have in america) greed becomes a good thing because the only way to gain any wealth is by producing something that your fellow man wants. Theoretically he wants that product or service because he feels it will improve his quality of life. And the free market is all voluntary, there is no force involved like there is non free markets.

  • @landwalker88 Force comes about with monopolies. An unregulated market breeds monopolies.

  • @Hoopmov in a free market how can a company have a monopoly? By producing what people want to a higher quality and cheaper cost than anyone else can. And if they can't do that then a new company will pop up and take over and we're all better off because of that competition. Public schools are a government created monopoly and they aren't cheap or efficient.

  • @landwalker88 A monopoly can easily be created by a company with enough buying power and selling rates. Take Wal-Mart for instance- capitalism's work of art.

  • @NoseSeal but why is walmart a monopoly? because they sell their products for the cheapest prices and apparently the quality is good enough. If it wasn't than people would voluntarily stop shopping there and walmart would go bankrupt. The only thing stopping another "walmart type store" from popping up is that they can't do it as well as walmart does. We can buy your paper towels, silverware, furniture, etc. from wherever we feel like, most of us choose walmart, so what is the issue?

  • @landwalker88 It's well established that very large corporations will do whatever they have to do to eliminate competition. Once they get big enough to monopolize or duopolize a market they scheme to ensure no other companies can "pop up and take over."

  • @Hoopmov how do they go about eliminating competition? By keeping their prices so low nobody wants to compete? They can't use force (unlike the government), all they can do is persuade people to shop at their stores and when another company pops up there is nothing stopping any one from shopping at the new store. There is an issue with monopolies however when government gives specific companies subsidies and put up tariffs to take out their competition.

  • @landwalker88 There are many ways as it turns out. There is industrial espionage and sabotage, insider trading, stock shorting, deliberate misinformation campaigns about rival companies, undermining of a competitor's assets or supply lines, etc.

  • @Hoopmov Some of those examples are illegal and companies could be sued for so they have incentive not to do them and obviously someone starting out has a weapon against them, stock shorting will only work if they guess right and their competitor's stock goes down, and how would they undermine their competitor's supply line? What would stop the supplier from selling to whoever is offering the best price?

  • @landwalker88 Well, first let me say that i really admire your deep belief in the goodness and honesty in people. You seem to put very little stock in the power of greed and the drive to maintain power, once acquired, at any costs. That is overall a valuable position to have. OK, moving on. First, it's a little tough to make free market arguments and then try to defend against the charge of potential spurious behavior with "we have laws against that" because a free market would have very few...

  • @Hoopmov ...regulations. Most free market advocates would like to only see enforcement of contract law and not much more. Next, on competitor's supply interference, if you have a competitor and they very much need to maintain a consistent cost of a few key ingredients to be competitive you can potentially buy the mines or factories of the producers of those ingredients and raise the price. Or you could buy the transport system and raise those rates. Happened in the american west.

  • Also look at history, can you name a single company in the past that maintained their monopoly for a reason other than they were selling their stuff for the lowest price/highest quality? Not including companies that had help from the government with tax incentives, subsidies, tariff protection or any of those sorts of things.

  • @landwalker88 It's not a perfect example but check out DeBeers diamond company in the early 20th century for a taste of what companies do with and without government support to maintain their control of a market. Watch out for the straw man tactic here. Your standard is omitting of the fact that even before governments there have been other power entities that influence markets like monarchies. Your advocacy is theoretical so asking for empirical examples to prove you wrong is a bit abusive. ;)

  • Look up on Youtube Walter E. Williams version of Greed is Good. He explains why greed is beneficial for the economy and society.

  • @yellowbrickroad There's too much greed- enough to cast deviances & criminal effort.

We had a history when professions were carried & knowledge was shared freely for the good & prosperity of a community. Medical insurance follies, expensive education, frivolous suits, & more laws that fine you than protect you were unheard of.

Now assets & property cost more than life. The only way to survive this cesspool of a rock is being as greedy as the other parties.

  • It's a good thing Maher is funny because if anybody gave Americans all these unflattering facts straight he'd lose his job. Oh, yeah, Phil Donahue did lose his job (for questioning the Iraq war).

  • @babamuna66 The power of comedy eh?

  • @babamuna66

    You confuse comedy with STUPIDITY.

    But consider the source LOL

  • I second the notion. You should run for president you magnificent bastard!!

  • @USmarinePunk Only if he gets to retain his writing staff. Chris Kelly is amazing.

  • Wise Words

  • Maher clearly thinks we have a free market; he's making the same mistake that Marx did 150 years ago, when he applauded Lincoln for conquering the American states-- an applause later echoed by one Adolf Hitler in "Mein Kampf.... and repeated over the states of the Weimar Republic.

Oh well, those who fail to learn history.....

  • @SovereignStatesman STFU idiot. There has NEVER been a free-market in this country since the trust-busting of the early 1900's. It never ceases to amaze me how libertarian/conservative jackasses such as yourself ever so flippantly attempt to re-write history or nullify well-known economic fact for the sake of an ideology that has been proven time and time again to be one humongous FAIL. The end-game of pure Capitalism is total monopoly/oligarchy..period.

  • @popasmuerf

I'd explain the problem with that, but you're obviously too much of a fucking god-forsaken moron to have any hope of understanding it.

The problem with you idiots is that you want benevolent dictatorship, which is a fucking OXYMORON;that's why you worship at the shrine of Lincoln when he was the most deranged lunatic in world history.

  • @SovereignStatesman WTF are you talking about? Benevolent dictatorship? Please cite where I posted ANYTHING about BD? Worship at the Shrine of Lincoln? Did you smoke the big or small piece of crack this morning? I am thinking the big piece.

  • @popasmuerf

    "WHA? DUH? HUH?"

Real walking fountain of wisdom we've got here. THANK YOU PUBLIC SCHOOL!

  • @SovereignStatesman Ahhh..I get it..you would explain your position...but you can't...because..we are too stupid...or could it be that you are aware that your position likely lacks credibility and or would not stand to even light scrutiny so you rely on manufactured bravado and "superior intelligence"....LOlz...you fail at life.

  • @popasmuerf

    Yeah.... here's a tip..... dots.....are not.... punctuation!

    ROTFLMAO

  • @SovereignStatesman Right-Wing-Douche-Translator says: "I got nothing...and teh logic makes me cry...." Keep'em coming!

  • @popasmuerf

The people aren't in charge, idiot. As long as you keep thinking they are, you'll keep chasing that wild goose.

Say hi to your hunting-pals Wile E. Coyote and Elmer Fudd.

  • @SovereignStatesman Uhmmm...okay..so again what is your point. Please cite where I posted anything remotely resembling anything you accuse me of; or you could always keep playing the buffoon.

  • @popasmuerf

You agree with Maher that government should have more power, and that will fix things.

That implies that you think government doesn't have enough power.

And that implies that you think the people have more power than they actually do.

That's why Maher is like the blind leading the blind, and they're both going off the cliff.

  • Actually he said "greed, FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORD, is good."

That just means he's got a limited vocabulary!

Maher is simply a living troll who, ironically, got rich being a communist agitator-- just like Limbaugh was a loser in what he claims is the "free market," until he got rich peddling hate for those who failed to realize the same American Dream that escaped him.

So it seems that mass-media pundits are universally hypocrites.

  • Capitalism is the organised legalised robbery of the working class . Greed is the enforced poverty of many and the nomadic rampaging of accumulation and concentration for the criminal ruling elite.

  • @arzoyan

"Capitalism is the organised legalised robbery of the working class "

So what's feudal aristocracy, like Maher believes in?

  • @arzoyan

only someone who never read anything but marx could say somethign as stupid as that

  • @unfad1ng

That's not true-- after all, Marx did! LOL

  • @unfad1ng

I knew I'd end up having to explain it...

  • @arzoyan I think you mean corporatism. Without capitalism there would be no working class.

  • @arzoyan Yes and communism is fair distribution of income among the peasants.... I think neither is a good idea but if a choice has to be made then capitalism is by far fairer...

  • @Forseliz Your idiotic parrot like verbalism is outdated, Corporate dominated life is just another aspect of STATE dominated society. Get some thinking outside your owners box.

  • @arzoyan Yes because the society SHOULD be ruled by someone, else you will get absolute anarchy. An idiot is a politcaly unaware individual which i am not, atleast at the moment. Are you one of those ,,intelectuals,, who also believe in the 9-11 conspiracy? That globalwarming is a lie and stuff like that? Capitalism will prevail because it emphasises economic decisions better with our limited resources than any other system. A regulated market would be even better...

  • @Forseliz All wealth is created by work-worker all wealth is accumulated by capitalist. If you are that blinded ask your mum to cook you noodle. Market is very much already Regulated for the monopoly game of corporate domination, which planet are you living again?

  • @arzoyan Im living on the only planet i have access to atm. I dont know what noodles will help me with. But if you are so keen on criticizing the system, how about you give some better ideas that are not as retarded as comunism, marxism and so on.

  • @Forseliz

Im assuming arzoyan is calling for a resource based economy. If not that I have no idea.

  • @arzoyan which planet are you living on claiming greed is exclusive to the wealthy? the fact you support a state which inhibits personal freedom and coersion demonstrates just how much more dangerous any ideology you might propse really is.

  • @arzoyan True stuff. And you'll never reform it away, the system won't allow that. Anyone who tried to really reform capitalism would probably be put away, on the grounds that anyone who isn't happy in the thousand-year Reich (oops, I mean capitalist society) is clearly insane. There's only one way to get fix the problem, and that's to get rid of capitalism, and the capitalists, entirely.

  • @MisanthropicMarxist A majority democratic working class movement to share the Earth in cooperation for our common needs and well being, A moneyless, classless, stateless communities of humanity. Capitalism is organised violence against working class

  • Abba did make a song named "Money, Money, Money"... just sayin'..

  • @Unknownsceptic Yeah, but the next line is "It`s a rich mans world".

  • I don't think republicans believe that there is such a thing called greed.

  • @Rattapax

    They call it common sence

  • 70% of the fish you have in America present some kind of intersexuality, way to go USA! You're in the right path, to complete destruction.

  • Your right bill,so whats the solution?capitalism...or socialism?do we have a an answer?

  • @huertalouis77 wikipedia: Anarcho-syndicalism

  • @Hoopmov

You've been sucking Noam Chomsky's cock too much.

    Anarchy will never work.

  • @morrowindfan75 How dare you sir!? You have no right saying that about me in the past tense.

  • @Hoopmov

So you don't deny that you are a Chomsky dickrider?

  • @Hoopmov

How old is Chomsky now? 80? 85? His dick must be wrinkly and taste like his students' mouths.

  • @morrowindfan75 your wit and originality is second to none.

  • @huertalouis77 The solution is multi-step. Step one is called dump-meaningless-buzzwordism. Step two is critical-thinkingism.

  • @huertalouis77 I dont think it needs a label... We cant box a concept like that into a single word... Let me explain my self... Competition its good in my opinion because it forces people to better and create new tings. But if I get sick I need the best medical assistance and it needs to be free. Education needs to be deb free not free. So in my opinion good all fashion commonsense needs to rule.

  • what he seed was ABSOLUTE BRILLIANCE and sad,

and that's why the US is going down

  • Bill Maher is an idiot. You can't expect to solve "the PROBLEM OF GREED" without asking 3 simple questions; what is greed, where does greed come from, and why greed exists in the first place? Only individuals are greedy, thus, any collective attempt to CHECK greed is going to backfire by law of nature. Greed already has a natural check built into human nature that's 100x more effective than the OVERSIGHT that these idiots call for. It's called FEAR. FEAR of personal loss.

    watch?v=aFAf4HHvn0I

  • @TheManiacalSatanist6 That's exactly the kind of additude Bill was talking about.

  • That suit is too shiny.

  • Bill Maher, Why don't you run for President of the United States?

    I WILL VOTE FOR YOU!!!!!!

  • @MrEvanston ramen!

  • @MrEvanston Colbert/Maher 2012?

  • Religulous was good

Economicly he is not so strong and doesn't even have solutions. Only ranting.

Understand greed is good. Not cheaters that is different. Read Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith.

"By pursuing his own interest he frequently promotes that of the society more effectually than when he really intends to promote it." (Book 4, Chapter 2)

  • @asg102

    Smith needs revision. :)

Altruism trumps competition. Greed is not good, it is inefficient.

  • @Lodatzor Smith does not need revision. Smith also has a book called "The Theory of Moral Sentiments". In wealth of nations Smith's intentions where to benefit those in poverty. Read his book before you say it needs revision, because you obviously haven't.

  • @asg102

Intentions are meaningless. Accuracy is the key. Smith needs revision.

I do note, also, that you had no actual rebuttal to my rationale. This is revealing.

  • @Lodatzor How are intentions meaningless? He is showing you how free markets ultimately lead to prosperity. Not a state-led economy. What is their to rebut? Altruism is not an economic way and it differs from person to person. The only way Altruism works is through freedom, not pushing legislation. Through freedom I can help those I want, and you can help those you want.

I really don't think you understand what Smith said, because if you did you won't be saying the things you do. Please read.

  • @asg102

    "How are intentions meaningless?"

Because if he is wrong, then he is wrong. A good man may make mistakes and a bad man may stumble upon the truth. What Smith was 'intending' to do is irrelevant to the fact that he was wrong.

    "What is their to rebut?"

The fact that he is WRONG. What is there here to misunderstand?

Just because Smith said something does not mean it is sacred. It is simply the view of things from a man who lived many years ago, who was speculating upon the future.

  • He had no opportunity to observe his theories in practice, and had he done so, if he was so astute, he would have revised his opinions given the wealth of evidence and logic which refutes him.

"Altruism is not an economic way and it differs from person to person."

No it doesn't. Altruism is cooperation for mutual benefit. It's inherently superior to competition because the end goal is efficiency and satisfaction, not supremacy.

    THAT is freedom.

  • You see, being free is not simply being able to do whatever you want. Why? Because your actions affect others. Why should someone else be forced to endure your choices? That is infringing upon their liberty, surely? Coercion is not confined to government.

The true measure of freedom is when wants for naught. When one is able to take what what wishes in order to prosper, and this hinders no-one else. That is, of course, not competition, and not capitalism. ;)

    Smith needs revision.

  • "I really don't think you understand what Smith said, because if you did you won't be saying the things you do. Please read."

/I/ have, and I am also providing a succinct, coherent reason why his theories are in error. If you believe my assessment to be in error, then feel free to challenge it, but please do not wave the name of Smith about as though it is impressive.

That's like claiming that the only reason someone doesn't believe in God is because they haven't read the Bible.

    It's poor.

  • This is the best of Bill Maher hands down.

  • Our greed is why this nation is ahead of everyone else. If you people want policies like Sweden then you should move to Sweden.

  • @LeemanBrothaz But that's the problem: this nation isn't ahead of everyone else. The things that America is ahead on are not the whole picture. Take a look at all the indices that quantify success on earth: press freedom, happiness, health, transparency, violent crime, prison population..and financial wealth. Only one of those is dominated by the US. Ask yourself: who are the people who really want it that way?

  • Bill always reminds me of Alan Shore from Boston Legal :) He owns.

  • america is a disease with no cure

  • How fucked up must country be where the only ones still bothered with telling the truth are comedians like Jon Stewart and Bill Maher?

  • @TomFynn you are absolutely right, I´ve been saying that for years, its ridiculous that comedians are the only ones asking the right questions and talking about important issues. I get more depth in one Real Time show than in 6 hours of CNN

  • The reason those with the sickness of Greed wont share, is because they have a spiritual disease, called.... Greed.

This is puzzling to many people, but the fact is they run the world because of the fact that they have this disease, people without it have no kind of desire to control everything and monopolize it all for themselves...

Jesus Christ came to serve, not be served... Came to live for his fathers wants, not his own...

    This is the only way...

Any other way... is the path to dis-ease

  • Can I like it a dozen times at least somehow?

  • However, it's clear that BOTH government and private business conspire to rip people off, that's extremely obvious. The housing bubble is a clear example of collusion between the two. The bailout is another. But please Maher don't cite the free market system and greed as the reason for everyone's woes. It's because government screws us over and colludes with private businesses that our problems arise.

  • A few problems here. Number one, what is greed? Is a 50% year over year profit greed? Is $1 million salary a year greed? Is hiking your prices 20% during a shortage greed? To be greedy, some omnipotent being has to define what greed is, and also how much excess makes you greedy. I can't do that. If it's illegal, or if you're colluding to evade the law, then it's illegal. To say greedy supposes that you are owed something by someone or that everyone has a right to equal things, which is wrong.

  • Greed IS good. Apple did not come out with the iPhone because it inherently loves us. No advances in technology is made because companies want to be nice to us. They do it to make a profit. And when they are greedy, we the consumers win. When government does things, the last thing they care about is the consumer. This country runs on greed, and greed in turn makes life better.

  • @dancetahitian thats bullshit.

  • @235RB What a well thought out response. Why don't you expound on your elementary response and tell me how it's bull shit. The fact that you're at a computer means you're taking advantage of someone's idea and desire to make a profit. Bill Gates didn't intend to make life better for the good of humankind. He did it to make money. Using your lame logic, you shouldn't ever seek to get a raise since obviously what you're making now is enough for you to survive. Any more would be greedy.

  • @dancetahitian haha you paint famouse strides in human history with profit motive. You know why thats bullshit? Ill give just a few examples. The scientists who developed the polio vaccine, they did't want recognizition, money or even to put a patent on it.

NASA, We did't put a man on the moon for profit.

You see, not all great strides are fueled by Profit, Plus Bill gates gives much of his wealth to charity.

Also Look at warren Buffet, richest ,man alive, and probably the most humbl

  • @235RB Another lame response. Who said that ALL strides were fueled by profit? MANY of the great strides of mankind are fueled by man's pursuit of his self interests. The polio example doesn't make what I said less true. Again, Bill Gates gives to charity. But my point is that he became rich because he pursued his self interests in making money, and as a result, 80% of computers worldwide use Microsoft products. Absolutely nothing wrong with self interest, or "greed" however you define it.

  • @dancetahitian Oh now you change your story, dumbass. We are talking about Greed being good in terms of money. It is't. your just a fucking idiot. end of story.

  • @dancetahitian - America does run on greed. And it is destroying your country. You may have lots of nice gadgets to play with, but all that does is divert your attention. If you really paid attention, you'd see that America is going down the gurgler.

  • I think whats destroying this country is excessive greed. Greed is good (everyone is out for their own) ... to a degree. But the problem I see is that we dont watch Greed, Greed must be watched and kept at a reasonable standard. What we have now is not only deregulation but wall street has bought off the politicians. So wall street not only owns us but they own our leaders as well. So it isnt being watched by anyone no matter how much they try to say otherwise.

  • @CyeOutsider If you can give me a clear, unambiguous definition of greed, and apply it across the board, let me know. Of course America is going down the tube, absolutely. But it's not because of evil private corporations. Private corporations cannot get one dollar from us unless we voluntarily give it to them. The government, however, can extract money from us without our consent and use it for their stupid purposes (i.e., Fanny Mae, Wall Street bailout) and screw us in the process.

  • Dont think the senet or congress would work with bill maher if he was president. just like they are doing now, refusing to do anything to help the american people, and blaming the president.

  • no, but abba had Money, Money, Money

  • Seriously, if Bill Maher ran for president, people would be surprised by how much support he'd get. This country is probably too corrupt to let him win, but we have to start fighting back at some point.

  • @dudesonman4200 I don`t think Bill would even want to be president. And, if he did, really doubt that anyone (by anyone meaning government) would let him to that.

  • What a pitiful people we are.

  • I'd give my last tooth to hear an elected representative speak like this---Bernie Sanders comes closest and I wish he'd run for Prez.

  • just what i thought. one of the best monologues ive heard from him and other people-

  • If what Bill Maher said does not make any sense to you, you have got your head in the sand.

  • digg this!

  • this is pure brilliance. I haven't heard anything this great from Maher ever. I've watched Maher for over a decade and he's made a lot of great pieces before, but this tops them all. ABSOLUTE BRILLIANCE!!!

  • @Overb The height of arrogance is the height of control of those who create God in their image. This ideological process of distortions and dehumanisation over the millenia is a nessasary feature of minority rule to control societies for their material gain and power. Capitalism is the globalisation of the rule of the minority elite and global phenomena of the monetary control of the working class shackled in wage slavery of useless employment in world market mechanism of atificial scarcity.

  • @arzoyan I think that your defining socialism/communism, ask any Russian-Pole-East German-ect what they had 20 yrs ago. You have just explained it perfectly. There is NO capitalism in the west anymore only govt, interventions (which is socialism) and the march down the road to fascism. In capitalism the banks would have gone bust, the fools would have been punished and govts. would have fallen because of their recklessness.

Sadly we face more laws, more interventions and unfortunately ruin.

  • @puniks2112 Ex Soviet empire and current China are examples of STATE CAPITALISM . China is predicted to become the leading CAPITALIST ECONMOY in ten years. The idelogical deception for mind numbing servitude is the art of control for minority material interest. Rise above parroting .
