  • Drummer rips five lefts @ 1:53 = tasty!

  • Wow! I never heard of people hating or speaking bad of Wynton! I am sure there are a few, but surprised if it is more! What a Great Guy and a Great Musician! He carries a ton of knowledge and history with him!!!

  • Anyone hating on Wynton is just that! A HATER!!!!

  • How can they say unemotional, isnt he baring it all in this solo, and this isnt the only one he does that in. UNdoubtedly the most sought after and recognized jazz musician of the last 25 years.

  • @Campestral - Your post confuses me. I missed no point, I said nothing untrue, & I don't think you'd disagree with my post if you re-read it. Either way, I'm not into YouTube debates, so enjoy the music, whatever makes you happy.

  • pretty cool

  • Wynton is a true hero for a (relatively)younger generation of Jazz enthusiasts.

  • @ZaneCase84 Indeed he is! I feel every middle school music class in America should begin with watching him and his friend speaking about improvising while playing music (jazz), In this case they use Happy Birthday as their Demo! Such a perfect tune to teach such a hard concept in music!

  • 13 people play a woodwind instrument. how could you dislike this?

  • I had the honor of seeing Wynton very up close & personal recently. Aside from the great music I knew he'd deliver & did; he truly surprised me with his extremely broad, reaching, deeply human, soulful, passionate, & real love not only of jazz, not only of all real music, but his evolution into totally embracing all of the roots of music itself, and how priceless & irreplaceable it is to our collective soul. Anyone who thinks he is other than that hasn't had any contact with the man.

  • @MCBrianOnline you're missing the point, great musicians should touch everyone not just the jazz fans that is why hendrix is acknowledged as a friend because he soaks up everything our best thoughts think of and relays them back to us , most other musicians just get caught up in their own histrorical fantasy where we're waving bye bye :|

  • Haha 2:13 the drummer cant believe it.

  • he looks like carmelo anthony

  • WTH does wynton get younger as he ages?

  • @THE3FATGUYS lmao true

  • 12 people are CRAZY!

  • Seems that way - Off to see hi play Ronnie Scott's next week

  • JAJA at 1:42 the guy on the yellow shirt is my graNDFther too, (I'm cousin to Alvaro ;D...)

  • @BloodHassassin I don't believe it - the guy in the yellow shirt is my Grandfather too. Small world!

  • @Fank234 Isn't he everyones grandfather??

  • can't stop listening!!!!!!!!!!

  • Brings so much JOY... thank you Wynton..

  • uhh email?? and i only have like letter names written down not sheet music

  • @StealthxAssassin117 i could send you an email but i dont have seet music just letter names

  • @chillinbro666 i sent u a message if you could send me the letter names please

  • At 1:42, that lady next to the guy in the yellow polo shirt is my great grandmother!!!!!!

And off course I'm kidding, lol, but yeah, AMAZING trumpet playing by Wynton, as

    always!!

    :-)

  • As a (shitty) trumpet player myself, I was asked from our teacher during a jazz history class my thoughts on Wynton.

I repllied, "I'm not sure if jazz lost a stellar player or if jazz education gained an incredible spokesman".

  • @oaklandtobangkok Why would jazz have "lost" a stellar player?

  • MY IDOL!!

  • 1:23 i think he starts to feel the soul of the music. favorite part

  • MUY BUENO TOCA LA TROPETA MUY BIEN

  • if i was notating his part at 2.00 i would just put 'MASH VALVES' and the Gliss lines lol

  • @idontcare556 I also wondered if he actually had a plan there lbs

  • I swear, everyone who dislikes Wynton Marsalis and his playing come with that same damn "no soul in his music, narrow-minded, and he needs to stick with classical" speech. He has done a lot for children who don't have the means or opportunity to follow the arts and have made ways for kids to learn music. That alone means a lot, not to mention the fact that WM is just a straight badass, on the stage and off. He speaks his mind and backs it up.

  • The thing I like most about Wynton Marsalis is the respect he has for Louis Armstrong. He will forever hold a special place for me as does Stevie Ray Vaughn with his respect for Jimi Hendrix. Rarely do we get magnificence twice in a lifetime.

  • 2:23 Herlin changes up the groove. :)

  • A+ Wynton for keeping this music alive !

  • 1:25 he goes on the attack!

Even the back up trumpeter wasn't ready for it!

  • He views jazz as a type of classical music and thats where he is great at. He is a wonderful Classical Artist. Honestly though he is only making music to be in the eternal spotlight. He doesnt honestly have feel to music, he doesnt have a heart for music. Miles Davis, Dizzie Gillespie, and countless others have come out with at least one or more material that is extraordinary and boundary breaking that Wynton will never achieve in his life time. Something he will never have. Thats my opinion.

  • @GraditudevsRevenge good job copying from wikipedia

  • @BaconFrenchBrys Honestly its from my musical point of view as well. He came to Winnipeg and performed at the concert hall. He was amazing, but at the same time disapointing. Miles Davis was embarrassed by the immaturity Wynton displayed onstage with him. A trumpet off? Really? Why would you compare two different approaches to music? It's like mixing oil and water together, you can't. Music is meant for no competition, but for the essence of expressing beauty through an instrument.

  • Sure I mean his dynamics, range, articulation, tone, rhythm, sense of time, every technical aspect is fantastic. If you want a real jazz player listen to Miles Davis, or John Coltrane, Chick Corea, Charlie Parker, Louie Armstrong, countless others. These artists have come out with at least one album or song that revolutionizes music. Miles once had him uninvited on stage to show him off, and he had to tell Wynton to get the fuck off cause he just wanted a battle Miles, to "Prove" he was better.

  • Gotta be honest...Wynton has amazing time, sound, sense of rhythm, technically amazing. BUT, to me Wynton has no voice, no presence, no feel for the music. The man thinks music is about blowing people up on stage and starting emotional rage on the dot. He is extremly critical and political on how music is, and how people play. He is very narrow minded when it comes to the history of jazz, he does not count the mid 60's and 70's as "true Jazz" music. He only essentially plays music for awards.

  • 6 people have no taste in music.

  • Como siente y expresa lo que esta interpretando siente la música esa es la clave para tocar mejor

  • There's not a lot of Armstrong in there...but what do I know...

  • is that a young walter white sitting lead in the trumpets?

  • nuances are what make this so good. it's not that wynton never misses a note, it's that he hits each note perfectly. appropriate tone, volume, effects, everything. it's just amazing how every note is hit perfectly

  • the lick at 1:26 is one of the best i've ever heard

  • It is amazing that some people actually say Wynton cannot play this genre well.

  • Wynton is not only the best trumpet player of our era, he's also the most charismatic.

  • that brother plays con el alma

  • This music is class and elegance. Simple as that.

  • @Leshawn1977 Yup the name is B2S3

  • lol excuse mr trumpet

  • 0:25 this is what u do if you can't triple toungue

  • @Nobroa That is a Monette mouthpiece, a B2S3. Monette mouthpieces come in all different weights, and that one is a certain weight, although the name of it escapes me.

  • @TheDrPhresh thats the right name for it B2S3

  • He sounds so good! I love this tune. I'd really like to know whats up with his mouth piece though... I have never seen one like it

  • 6 people are stupid cuz they missed the like button

  • @HJWins agreed i think some people have jumped on the miles train and dissed the genius in this guys playing

  • Now that's a trumpet player!

  • men this guys are great

  • me likey!

  • Amazing,

  • he circular breathed 3 times to hold the very last note!!!

  • crapped myself at 1:26

  • Is the lead sax Wess andersson ?

  • wow i play trumpet but what Wynton just played was amazing!!! :D

  • You can see at the end that Wynton had really given his all. He had just performed a flawless improv on this classic tune. And his audience was appropriately appreciative.

  • agnt ta falando do melhor do mundo!?

    sem explicação

    esse é Winton Marsalis

  • Muito bem explicado o som dele, é facil a percepçao de todas as notas!! incrivel

  • anyone know of a good website to find sheet music for this kind of song? (either full band parts or just the solo)

  • What's crazy is hearing Rafael Mendez Circular breath and double tongue in moto perpetuo. Wynton slurs most of it. Which is actually a nice touch to it.

  • I wanna learn to growl like that!! I might have to move to New Orleans to do it but it would be well worth it. :)

  • Grande !

  • I lovethe way that the band are into it .

  • i love the way Wynton can switch his style so he can sound more like Louis haha friggin tasty

  • allen vizzutti circular breathes like a beast

  • It looks like he is sucking air in through his nose while pushing it out his mouth at about 2:05. Am I wrong?

  • @gitfiddle07 That's called circulation breathing.

  • He can do that. It's called circular breathing. Listen to him play Paganni's Moto Perpetuo. That's all circular breathing.

  • Its called circular breathing

  • no its called circular breathing is the same technique used in flight of the bumbble bee

  • no its called circular breathing, players use it to breath in but exert air at the same time to keep the notes slurred and tied and play longer connected tunes.

  • @gitfiddle07 Correct ! That's exactly whats he's doing. Cause if he isn't, he's not Human! LOL He's AMAZING : )

  • Man Wynton killed that little sus vamp at the end. Love this vid.

  • at 1'42, that gentleman in the yellow polo shirt is my grandfather!!!!!!

And of course, AMAZING trumpet playing by Wynton, as always!!

    :-)

  • @alvarokapaz lololololz youre gpa is a star man!

  • @AStateTrumpet I guess, lol...he's been great friends with Wynton for a long time now. He's an amazing guy...they both are! :-)

  • sounds like you missed the show by a couple generations ;) What a lucky man to have seen that.

  • @SemiProMusicProf This guy is going to be good if he keeps practicing. Check out any of my videos for a lesson in proper technique and phrasing.

  • @alvarokapaz omg is it really?!

  • @sabrezfan308 YEAH!!! Amazing, isn't it?? :-)

  • @alvarokapaz

That's awesome! These were some of the best shows people could hope to see!!

  • @alvarokapaz he stands out loads ahaha

  • @alvarokapaz looks like your grandfather has some good taste in music

  • @alvarokapaz Twenty thousand dollar horn .Leave louis alone you would'nt make a pimple on Loius buttDEWEY

  • i wanted him to sing! He is by far my favorite trumpet player, he is so versatile in his playing. It's amazing. What style mouthpiece is he playing?

  • he uses a monette mouthpiece

  • Monette.

  • Wynton is one fo the best all around trumpet player of the world.I know what i say very good atack on the notes in hi and low, Shalom

  • Stop overanalyzing it. Wynton is NOT imitating Cootie Williams. He and Cootie both imitate the STYLE of Louis Armstrong. Naturally, they would do so considering that this is the Portrait of LOUIS ARMSTRONG and because Louis Armstrong has the iconic trumpet style in New Orleans music in general.

  • You have to more than a good trumpet player to imitate another players style, and Maralis does a great job here.

  • hahahahaha.....he's my favorite....My favorite part is when he finishes and he's trying to see what's going on around him but everything is going black as he's saying thank you and taking a bow.

  • 2:00-2:12: Oh my dear Lord.

  • Lol. I love the part from 1:59-2:11. Wynton is the best!

  • I love his facial expressions when playing, especially at 1:13. It's like he saying, "Well excuse you there trumpet."

  • @VivaLaTrumpet that line at 1:13 is very tasty, im going to transcribe it!

  • Omg that is totally how Louis Armstrong plays.

    Awsome.

  • no it isn't, he is playing like cootie williams (originally played the solo)

  • I fooled my band director (who's trumpet performance major) by letting him hear this, then asking who it is. He said Louis Armstrong, and I said Marsalis, and he said Damn.

  • what kind of mouthpiece is that?

  • It's a monette mouthpiece

  • man i love the guys expression at 1:30! He is so amazed! But who wouldn't be? Marsalis is amazing!

  • imagine being able to play like that just for an hour .. it would be the best hour of your life, and just think he could do that any time he wanted.

  • That would be the life...

  • Wynton just kicks ass. His sound comes from his whole body....

  • Splendid..... reminds me of visits to New Orleans years ago for business purposes.

  • You see that fool circular breathing? Damn, what a beast.

  • this is perfection, no doubt

  • if you want a nice horn for that price i would look around at Bach's. They are great horns and not just because they have become a "standard" for trumpet playing but because they are great horns. Specifically a Strad. I played a B&S for couple years and thought it was great until i bought the bach i play on now. The problem i had with the B&S was it felt a little stuffy and had a lot more back pressure than necessary. Thats my opinion, good luck!

  • una obera magistral del maestro marsalis.inpactante el sonido sensual del jazz.

  • If I wanted a really nice trumpet between 800-1000 where would I look to?

  • shop on ebay for a month or two to get a feel for a seller that you might be comfortable with buying from. and, or, yamaha is probably your best bet in that price range.

  • Try to get a B&S, or a Cannonball. Look for used stuff. The Cannonballs have been coming down in price recently. The Mad Meg model is my favorite. Also you're not going to get a very good Yamaha in that price range. Beginner Yamahas go for 700. You won't even get one decent until you spend 1800, and I'm not even a fan of the Yamahas...too sterile sounding for me.

I used to work in a Music store, I've played tons of trumpets. B&S and Cannonball are the way to go. Look for old Holtons as well.

  • Backs can be a bit tight all round... unless you modify or maybe try to find a 43 / 43* LR... best bet is a nice commercial yamaha. However - I blew an old Challenger and it was scary! & I use monettes

  • go to your local pro shop and try some trumpets out. personally, i dont think you would be able to find a good trumpet for less than a thousand.

  • do you think he'd be upset if i stole his trumpet........ i really want a monette, like real bad.................. like really bad.

  • Yeah, since it's custom made for him, I think he'd be pissed.

    Yeah, very pissed.

  • Maybe just a little upset, is all.

  • he would just get aother lol, but i would steal it first so

  • i love Wynton Marsalis, he's my favorite living trumpet player

  • Plus, he's super nice, and has started so many jazz (and music in general) programs for kids.

He's my favorite living player to.

My favorite one of all time is Armstrong, just because he's always so happy and had an amazing voice. I think he was more famous for his vocals that trumpet playing.

  • Great!

    Greetings from Hungary!

    Justice for Hungary!

  • You go, Marsalis!

  • You can buy the Monette 993 trumpet he is playing for ~8-10k new from Monette. Monette mpcs are 200-350 new.

  • Wow, everything turns into an argument on youtube...

Yes, high end mouth pieces can run up to 300 bucks, but there are definitely some good ones for less. Unless you're a Morgan, Baker, or Marsalis, chances are you DON'T need the priciest one, and a cheaper one will be fine (I'm not talking about 'First Act' cheap). However, if your bread and butter comes from your horn, maybe investing in the ABSOLUTE PERFECT mouth piece is a good idea.

  • Jazzman you are right $300/- for a brand new mouth piece. There are many available on EBay for $100/ and even less. Check it out.

  • @Curlyfunksta : trumpet and mouthpiece are custom Monette.

  • I want that kind of trumpet and mouthpiece! They look awesome

  • hope you got 50 grand layin around.... monette doesn't come cheap you're lookin at around 300 for just the mouthpiece.

  • 50 grand.. r u an idiot?

  • i will never exaggerate again since people don't get sarcasm...

  • shut up. 300 for a mouthpiece is cheap

  • ...Nooooo.

300 for a trumpet is cheap. 300 for a mouthpiece is in the "Yeah, I majored in trumpet performance" realm. You know, Monette mouthpieces.

There are good 50 mouthpieces to, those are the highschool ones.

Warburton makes great flugel, cornet, and trumpet mouthpieces for around 150, and I really like those.

But yeah, monette makes the best... well, everything.

  • hgfdhgf yeah i meant trumpet haha

  • chill bro.

  • 50 grand? Nope.

  • wynton sounds awesome...and his shape up is extra fresh...lol

  • yeah baby!!!

  • aweson performane...wat kind of mouthpiece is that

  • Both his trumpet and mouthpiece are custom Monette made.

  • Yeah man.. If you take lessons with Ron Miles at his house.. you can see all of his Monette shit. Probably Hundreds of thousands of dollars in Monette Mouthpieces and horns... That would be a cool sponsor

  • monette

  • ala madre ese wey esta pesado

  • Such a fabulous performer! Rare is it that you find someone equally as acclaimed in Jazz and European Concert ('Classical') music as Wynton.

  • Marsalis do good perfpmance of Armstrong

  • dam that run at 2:00 is kick ass

  • kick!! ass!!!

  • You can see how hard he's working to emulate Armstrong's sound here. Really great performance.

  • awesome! when was this concert?

  • nice circular breathing !!!

  • I met him twice once at brown university the following year at the Newport Jazz Festival. He is very serious with his thinking and very intense with his playing.

  • How does he make that sound at 1:06? (and several other places?)

Unbelievable that he could do all this despite the fact that he is 12 days younger than I. UPSTART!

  • you have make vibrate you tongue

practice saying " prrrrrrrrrrrrr" and play the trumpet at same time

sorry for my english, is very basic

  • You actually have to use your voice, it's called growling. You're referring to flutter tongue.

  • you don't use your voice, There's something in the back of your throat that vibrates.

When I was a kid we did it a lot to mimic a lion's growl.

  • Comment removed

  • and flutter tounging is a different thing entirely. This is a growl.

  • You actually do use your voice, but you do the growl with your throat while you're humming/singing/whatever.

  • Simply great

Thank you Winton this is the way to keep JAZZ alive.

    Ciao

    Louis Armstrong 更是大師中的大師,他曾說過:"人性有如萬丈深淵,每當我向下探望,總是暈眩不已!"

    人生的際遇...大師還可以跟你握手嗎? 聽聽音樂.聊表滿足了!

  • was that circular breathing? sick!

  • I'm so mad that I lost this CD
