The F3 key can also tell you what layer you're standing on. When pressed and the stats show up, if you look to the left of your screen and see the X, Y, and Z numbers -- the Y number (to the left of the decimal point) shows the layer you're standing on.

Disclaimer: The only things I use F3 for are to find out where I'm at in proximity to my spawn point and to find out what layer I'm on. everything else on that function is irrelevant to me.  I also consider using that key to track down mobs is cheating.

Another hint to find things, might be considered cheating, but it works.

Get to a wall 3 tall by 2 wide

get in the middle of the two blocks, where your looking at the line that separates them.

Move just a little bit to one side.

Look up.

Fill in the side of the wall that your looking at with sand or gravel.

you should be in between the sand .you can now see through the wall and see other caves around you.

To get rid of gravel super fast, put a torch two blocks beneath a column of gravel. Break the block between the gravel and the torch and the gravel will "disintegrate" immediately upon hitting the torch. No more shoveling! (Isn't as useful when digging a huge pit of gravel. Only when it's above you.)

if you want to get rid of gravel fast (mrsluclin) dig the block under the block that's supporting all the gravel, place a torch there, then dig the block that's supporting all the gravel to have it all turn to mini-blocks. I don't consider it cheating since it's a strategy. Also Luclin, how big are your video files? Whenever I record something, it turns out to be about 1.5GB just for 10 minutes.

About f3, my opinion is that it isn't cheating, but it is a harsh break in immersion, just like water elevator/ladders and other glitches. Definitely up to you, but it's good that you've figured out which one you think is more fun, rather than just knocking it for being unrealistic :)

Hello Mr Luclin, this comment is to steve if you want to have the f3 button working you have to press the apple in the top left of the screen and press system preferences and then go to the key board symbol and then press the the USE ALL f1 f2 ect. botton and then it should work
