@deboerdolf Oh, yeah.... loved that version! Especially when he channeled Elvis near the end of the song... John always said he wanted to be Elvis, but he was better! He was/is the soundtrack of my life. RIP Johnny!
Goosebumps, Paul. Thank you. We drove through the Blue Ridge on the way home today, John singing to us. Tears and laughter at the same time. How I miss him!
This was almost too heart-rending to watch. I discovered John in college at Ohio University, just guitar and himself, and was floored. California Bloodlines is on my "10 Albums I cannot live without." I heard him many times in Northern California. This his best: just John, guitar, the blackness around him, no production at all. His voice is fading, and yet his heart is undeniable. An American treasure. He's singing his own eulogy: we will remember you, my friend.
I remember the first time I saw John in concert....fall of 1974 at the University of Arizona. I was hooked! I am a teacher and use his music all the time...they reflect what was happening during different periods of our history. I thought he would be around forever.....
I knew John from the old Cellar in Los Gatos. I covered every song that I learned from him. I miss him sadly, deeply. This medley will play at my passing in tribute not to me, to him. A man can love a man for the beauty of his lyrics and chords and the visions and spirit I strive to carry-on as he did. I loved John Stewart. He taught me that and so much more. Thank you to the poster and thank you forever, John. I still love the echoes as I listen to you now.
30 years ago or so, I received a phone call from someone that excitedly told me that John Stewart was going to sing that afternoon at the Maricopa County Fair (in Phoenix). I dropped everthing and dashed to the free concert. There were only about 20 of us in the audience? We watched cattle trailers stir up dust as they passed infront of the stage. But John kept singing as if he were singing to a packed concert hall. "Makes me think of all the good times, that like a bluebird learned to fly".
@wwtriggs What a sweet comment. I'm sure I was in town when he played the Maricopa County Fair. Wish I had gotten the call too. I'da been there in a flash.
It has been 2 years today and the world still feels empty. I saw John numerous times in Phoenix, Flagstaff, Denver, Littleton, and Loveland, Colorado. His music always put a lump in my throat or a tear in my eye; and still does. I miss him and his music.
I was watching/istening to one of those music channels that have the facts every 30 seconds. Gold came on and only one fact about John came on. The rest was about stuff from the era. I was sad to see he passed as I looked him up. He was a talent. RIP John.
I I watched his wife hand him lunch through the window on the MTA- I watched from up on the rail as he drove the OLD Champaigner , drove her stone blind, and I saw the little red bird just now - My roots are deep in the California Bloodlines, I loved a Wheatfield Lady, I saw him live at the Santa Monica Civic in 1976, one of our true American Legends,
not for what he died "from" but what he lived FOR !!!!
I surely remember you, John, and I always will. But I remember too that the titel above ain't the right one. This song is called Missouri Birds and it 'shines like a diamond'.
Indeed, you're right. Anyway, I'm pleased to see that John Stewart's got such a crowd of devoted listeners. Over here in Holland I'm about the only one, I guess. Apart from that horrible 'Gold' he never got any airplay.
"Shoot all the brave deejay's and how will we ride."
Paul that was sensational-thank you. Often real greatness isn't recognised until after it's gone. I first saw John perform with the Trio at London's Royal Festival Hall on Easter Monday, 1963 and have the full collection of his work since then. Cherish also his many appearances, over many years, throughout the UK. What wonderful memories.
I was there too, and what about the royal variety show some years later. A fantastic man with words.( he injected such deep meaning into ordinary phases)
What a great video. Seems John is saying goodbye to each and every one of us. Thanks John for pouring out your heart to us through your songs, songs we all loved and held on to. To all of us who have followed your work for many decades, yes your spark will be carried by us as we hum your melodies and remember your words. Don't think the likes of your talent will be seen by us again.
Man, I thought I would head up by now. Touching and as poignant as it will ever get. We are lucky folks. Lyrics just keep running back. At 3 am yesterday, here in New York City, I heard clear as a bell: "...For I have been around with a Gypsy girl named Shannon. Daughter of the Devil. It is strange that I should mention her to you. I haven't thought of her in years." A great line of poetry. Gracias Paul! Estaban
Paul, thank you for your kind generosity in sharing these songs of John's in this most difficult time. It felt like John was singing a warm farewell to all who he touched--to all of us who loved him so deeply, and who will continue to hold him in our hearts. --Brian
What a great clip. I wish I could have seen him in concert one more time. I still can't get over his death. He was one of my greatest heros and now he's gone. I will never stop playing his songs - he has been a big part of my life. Rest in Peace John Stewart.
Thankyou for posting this. I was really hoping someone would have a clip of this song, it's so appropiate at the moment. I'm sure there are many thousands of us who will remember him.
Just amazing......one of the greatest ever but he never got the credit he deserved. But we know

What a well-written, appropriate and touching comment. For sure, heaven is a better place with John's presence.
Simply put, John Stewart improved my life for over 40 years.
