by IBIDU 2,i saw del shannon in Birmingham UK, there he topped the bill because Ricky Nelson Had Died in a aircrash,Bo Diddley came on and played then Del came on sang and played,Bo Diddleys playing was soon forgotten!!!!

  • Was this ever released as a single a side by Del

  • @drpesky yes 1964

  • @drpesky Yes, on July 4th 1964! Reached #22. B side was "Give Her Lots of Lovin"

  • @68enxy Thanks for the info i saw Del in Leicester my friend was on bass for him with his band they later became Deisel park west amd had a few lower placed hits

  • i do some live music and karaoke with friend..only sing 3 shannon songs though....BACK IN MY ARMS AGAIN,BROKEN PROMISES AND SWISS MAID...THE REST ARE TOO HIGH FOR ME!!! LOL

  • i was quite cheeky really wanting to meet him every time i saw him, first time was in 1970 at a small club in birmingham,he was supposed to appear at 12 midnight but turned up onstage at 1 am....i remember followng him up to the rest area where i bought him a drink,we discussed his music and life, signed all my albums (that i had taken with me) yes he was a really down to earth type of person and was always willing to spend time with his fans,i met him several times up till 1984.....

  • @websearch333 Its one regret i have had not to meet the guy . I saw him on three occasions . The last one was at a pub in Goole of all places .By then he was carrying a bit of weight and wearing his cowboy hat ,ha! Although the venue was was not to grand ,the performance he gave to a select few of fans was brilliant he nailed every number

  • @websearch333 When he did that live in england recording roy wood and jeff lynn were in the audiance some resort club i forgot the name

  • i went to meet Del Shannon in his dressing room on Birminghm U.K he showed me how to play 'RUNAWAY' on guitar!!! a smashing man

  • @websearch333 your a lucky guy .What a memory to have through your life. .A great story to tell

  • we could all retire on that guiitar.....

  • del shannon was the man. killer version of a killer tune.i love his version on the live in london from 1972. you are so missed

  • Where and when was this??? Anybody???? It's the same show from which there's a vid of Del doing Little Town Flirt.

  • @coyotesong I believe it was on Malibu Beach in California in 1965. Shows you how old I am.

  • @212729h Thanks for your info. I'm guessing though that I'm older than you are. Not that it matters. Just celebrated 6-4. That;s a long way from being 14 when i bought Runaway as a 45 of course. Do kids today even know what a 45 is????

  • @coyotesong Guess what, I'm the same 64. And the kids to day do know what a 45 is . And they also know all about this kind of music. Some one just has to play it for them. They get it, believe me. And they love it !!!!!!!

  • I will be dancing in the sands of Seal Beach to Newport Beach.

  • thank you for the tribute - a great artist of the 20th century

  • you just can't not to like del shannon he is awsome

  • Seems silly to see him looking at his fingers when he isn't even playing. He could just fake the chords.

  • Had you ever had the opportunity to see Del Shannon in concert, you would understand what a fantastic and accomplished guitar player he was. Haven't you ever heard of miming? Numpty!

  • i don't know how many times i heard this blast out the jukebox in my local fish 'n chippie shop in portobello edinburgh. wotttasound

  • fish and chips, salt and vinegar 1960s DEL SHANNON "suits you sir"

  • haha, right - and you can add 2 pickled onions and a haggis supper

  • this is a very good tune from the great dell

  • god he plays his guitar up high its nearly on his chin

  • Thats cos the tides commin in.

Superb version. I think I go for Del over Jimmy Jones

  • as usual del shannon sings the heck out of a good song , i want to get up and shake my bootie to this

  • brill

  • This is my favorite Del's song. Thanks Del for the great songs.(DAB)

  • This is one of the best songs del sings. Thanks Del (DAB).

  • I love the bridge in this version. A great uptempo song.

  • I Like This One Alot Better Then James Taylors

  • Jimmy jones does it a tad bit better, but del shannon is one of my favorite artists, jimmmy just that one song i enjoy.

  • Del Shannon is king

  • check out "that runaway man"

    please comment

  • The Beatles were huge fans of his. and wee very

influenced by jim. I think they may have done a tour together(?)

  • I love the Del Shannon version the best! Most unique sound for sure.

  • this guy was real!

  • I like both, but I prefer Del's version of this song to Jimmy Jones. A little more hard driving or something.

  • This is so great to see,his version is the best with lots of go,I still have a crush on you Del, ever since -63 when I first discovered you and got my first record of you, oh youth where did you go? I´ll always love you, caro

  • I far prefer Jimmy Jones' 1960 version to this, there's a reason Del's version only went to #22 and Jimmy's went all the way to #2, it's got a lot more feeling in my oppinion! But I much prefer Del Shannon's version to James Taylor's, you can't compare exciting artists from the late'50's and early '60's, to boring folk singers from later on!

  • As Jimmy Jones had a very distinctive voice, so did Del Shannon. A real treat to see footage of him doing this #22 hit from 1964.

  • Makes me so sad Del I miss you!!!!!!

  • norbellini, thanks again for posting this wonderful footage of Del! Where did the footage originally come from? It wasn't by any remote chance the show that Lee Alan produced and was hoping to go national with, was it?

  • When everything so beautiful. Great

  • Yeah, he was well good. Great version but I did love Jimmy Jones original too. Those two plus Frankie Valli would have made a good falsetto line-up.

  • saw del in a small club in cleethorpes in the eighties.A great talent sadly lost

  • To my mind, this song should have been his -

he should have had the major hit, he was a revolutionary artiste.

  • believe me i have just heard james taylors lacklustre boring version on the radio whilst on vacation . You have restored faith in me keep rockin wi DEL

  • good dance beyond

  • Del was treasured in the UK in the sixties and his records will live on as long as this planet has music. This is a wonderful rendition of the original, thank you

for providing this masterpiece of a truly great artist.

  • I had a crush on him he was just so cute and so wonderful , we all miss him.

  • If Jackie DeShannon married Del, she'd be Jackie DeShannon Shannon, If Carol Channing married him, she'd be Carol Channing Shannon, and if Diane Cannon married Del, she'd be Diane Cannon Shannon!! Del was the BEST!!!

  • If Tuesday Weld had married Hal March, JR., she'd be Tuesday March the Second.

  • Del was such a good artist, i remember listening to his music with my farther and it brings back such good memories, you don't get music with feeling like this now. i wish i was watching this with my dad.

  • Great Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay !!!!

  • you've got company, KayJuli, I'm almost embarrassed at how much time I stare at these wonderful memories and recall being a moody adolescent trying to make sense of life which made no sense and getting spiritual support from my music.

  • As a teenager in the 60s I loved Del Shannon, Bobby Vee and all the rest. Never thought Youtube could bring back such wonderful memories of good days. Now I´m stuck on Youtube just watching videos of songs that were part of my growing up. Thanks.

  • You and coyotesong express my sentiments exactly. Nothing makes it seem more like it did at the time than watching this stuff on youtube. Watching this recreates perfectly the feeling for me of it being 1965 all over again. Del holds up pretty well, doesn't he?

  • And I only discovered half an hour ago that he committed suicide. Couldn´t help crying a little because it was like he just died and so has part of my youth.

  • Yeah, Del had been having some financial and other problems and the strain was too much for him. He had been set to replace Roy Orbison with the Traveling Wilburys. He had an unequaled talent for expressing emotional tension in his music. I'm glad I got to see him perform live in a small club back in the 1980s -- he was in great voice and did all of his hits, even more forgotten ones like "Stranger In Town."

  • Yep it's so sad I wont forget when I saw it on the news I was about 16 years old and I was torn apart.

  • nice

  • I grew up with the Jimmy Jones version but Del Shannon is the one (and possibly only) singer whose singing can be as pleasing....one of the truly, truly great singers...

  • Agree..ery difficult to top Jimmy Jones versuion...James Taylor was smart to do a different version

  • absolutely fantastic singer

  • i have been trying to work out whether iprefer del shannon or jimmy jones singing this but they are both good in their own way

  • Del Shannon as a sound of his own
