Why is the runway painted yellow instead of white?

Well, not really.

But generally a yellow paint on a runway indicates an area is off limits except in emergency

I think, yellow colour can give the pilot sure feelings to be on the right side, because snow can cover the runway and how should the pilot know the difference from snow and white markings ?

@rubyportwine how long was the flight from oslo?

@seaboo143 We flew on the way from Oslo first to Tromsø and after that with the same plane further to Longyearbyen. On the way back from Longyearbyen to Oslo we flew straight and the time was 2h 44 min. for 2.016 km. Happy Eastern.

snow on the runway might confuse the pilots. The white stripes are distance markers and also denote the runway boundary

Correct!

In areas with alot of snow it is common to have yellow markers instead to reduce perceptional illusions.

@CVKent317 maybe because of the weather. it is snowing all year round. and white is difficult to see white. so maybe thats why they used yellow.

It looks very empty but it´s very nice and really quiet. Svalbard looks better from the air. On the ground you don´t see all these beautyful mountains. But I´ll go there again.
