Gary hit #11 in Billboard, 6-20-81. Produced by the Boss, and Steve Van Zandt. Sounds like the Big man, doin' the sax solo. RIp, Clarence. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!
Glad to see that there're no dislikes for this 1. Billboard's #58 hit of '81. Gary could still rock, even back then, right, gang? God bless! Hugs to ya, for postin' it!
Great music from a great singer who made a comeback in the early 80's! Springsteen helped to write and performed backing vocals with Gary U.S. Bonds on this song. Too bad music like this is never heard on the radio anymore, except on the oldies station. Thanks for posting this timeless gem!
@50fuckingtimes gary us bonds kicks ass!!!!!!!!!!!!! an original rocker who influenced bruce springsteen as much as anyone, that includes bob dylan. bruce's sound with big sax and drums came from gary. i love this tune!!!!!!!
This is true.. Well, indirectly the sound came from Frank Guida, who produced most of those great US Bonds records in the early 60s. Bruce idolized Gary and couldn't believe his eyes when he saw him singing in a small venue. It was Bruce's mission to get Gary back on the map
@rorygg1 Guida didn't use a double bass drum. He ran the bass drum "hot",
meaning he "overdrove" the bass drum when he recorded it, almost to the point of distortion. The meter was "in the red" for those who know about recording.
This song was a big hit for Gary Bonds. Springsteen did produce, play & sing on the cut. It's on the album "Dedication", which also features "Jole Blon" and "Dedication". It's a very good album in the Gary Bonds style!
PJ, you really can't say that this song is obscure, it peaked at #11 in 1981. It was written and produced by Bruce Springsteen and was Bond's comeback hit that he followed up with "Out of Work".
I didn't realize one word would start so much controversy, lol. Yes, I agree that the record was a hit. Apparently the record came and went very quickly and there are a lot of people that missed it when it was out. 20+ years removed I'd call it obscure There are r&b songs that were hits when I was in high school 10 years ago that are now obscure... It's About Time by Public Announcement is a great example.. The song was a hit for a minute but it slipped through the cracks over time.
I haven't ever heard this song on the radio... Keep in mind I was a year old when it came out. This song kind of slipped between the cracks when it was out (didn't go very high on the billboard charts). I've played this many times at DJ gigs and people have mentioned that they never knew he did a record since the '60s. Rare it is not but common it isn't either
Gary opened for the Allmann Brothers in 1981 at an outdoor concert in New York ,it was wonderful, everyone buzzed and having a great time dancing.I thought he was incredible..
LOL... I don't think The Boss would be upset.. It is pretty obscure. Since 1981 this one's been forgotten. Doesn't mean it's a bad song, just overlooked.
All kidding aside, you are right, and I cite the fact that no matter how I googled it, I can't find out 1. the chart placements for this record, 2. the amount of records they sold or 3. if Bruce ever or for that matter if anyone other than Gary US Bonds released it so I think without a doubt that constitutes the term forgotten. Sorry Boss.
Springsteen recorded, produced, and played on this album. It's not a question of Bonds doing a "cover". Pretty much the whole damn E Street Band participated on this project. In the 80's The Boss gave Gary a "leg up", while at the same time paying homage to him as a childhood hero and a rock and roll pioneer. In the Boss/Bonds catalog you'll also hear "covers" of Bob Dylan,
The Box Tops, The Beatles, and Jackson Browne. Bonds sings them all with integrity and style.
my dad used to have a old skool lp player wif old records, i was only born in the late 80s but i love this song, its a classic.
