try too hard! all they need two turntables and a microphone. who plays an instrument now days anyway? great song-great video-great band! they just don't make'm like this these days!
i agree, steve miller was huge in 77' so it sounds alot like him. The kinks 70's input was good not great. Their 60s stuff was way better although they released two great albums from the 70s in Lola and Muswill Hillbillies plus the percy soundtrack from 1971 has solid stuff too. Also, one of my favorite songs from their 70s era was "Father Christmas" from 1977.
@upthcreek true ITs Radio OVERPLAY!! those are all great tunes killed by radio overplay...Doobies "Listen to the Music" CCR"Proud Mary" best thing about "Stairway" was it was too long for commercial radio to kill...
During the Sleepwalker tour, Ray actually started to play the guitar again. Instead of just the Lola intro nonsense. This really paid off when they did songs like Jukebox Music, Life On The Road and especially Permanent Waves. Which I have a great live version of from the NYC Palladium.
@boxfitter ... it was nonsense, but funny too... when I saw them, "Give the people What They Want" tour... when everyone started to sit back down in their seats, he would grab the acoustic, strum the chords, and brought the crowd back to their feet... found it entertaining, and hilarious... Lola, was to the Kinks, like Dyer Maker was to Zepplin... a top 40 accident... lol... I think Aerosmiths' Accident was " Dream On "...
I didn't say The Kinks sound like Steve Miller, I said this song sounds like Steve Miller and I was referring to the sound he established on "the Joker" album from 1973 Since this song was released in 1977, I'll stand by my statement that this song sounds a lot like Steve Miller band.
I like The Kinks as much as anybody, but let's not be silly about it.
@breastlady ... I side w/you... Steve Miller was just gaining puberty , when the Kinks exploded on to the scene... What boscoruby might not know yet, is that the Kinks represented almost every music genre , ever recorded... and I have to give "kudos" to everyone on this page( except for Tazwell) for being creative enough, to not having to resort to #'s after their screen names...
@breastlady i dont know who came first...so im not going to talk, but Ray did rip off alot of people, Point and Example All Day and All of The Night/Hello I Love you-The Doors
Point and Example Mashed Potatoes/Itchycoo Park-The Small Faces. so if he did rip off Steve Miller, its not exactly inconcivable.
This was their comeback record in '77 after a bit of a drought on their RCA label tenure which found Ray Davies doing too many soap opera and Preservation Act self indulgences. Mind you, i enjoyed some of it, but this is when they came back into their own and became the super act they always were again. For some reason, the critics think Misfits was the better lp. Not even close in my opinion.
The Saturday Night Live performance of Sleepwalker is sweet. I don't have it on video, just a poor quality audio recording. But Dave's solo rocks. Someone has got to post it.
i have it. i don't know how to upload yet. give me some time. i'll figure it out. You're correct. It is awesome. And the medly of their older hits was ballsy too. I'll put that up right after, simply because you appreciate the finer aspects of the Kinks, as all those misguided fools worshipping Oasis should!
i also love the Saturday Night Live performance! it was here and i'm afraid it was deleted now. all of SNL vds here have been deleted by TV station or something.
i just love to see those 2 davies bros playing together..
is this the promo from the kinks kronikles two disc? What tv show is this? I have been hoping to see another version of sleepwalker. Very cool, there is an awesome version from saturday night live that i don't believe has made it to you tube yet.
All Day and All the Night came out when Ray and Jim were still in school. Check your dates, breastlady

A national anthem for sexual deviants .... AND it's got a beat you can dance to. How cool is that?! Thanks, Kinks!

either lip sync, or you replaced the audio; absolutely identical to the studio version.

"I'm a night stalker..." This song and its lyrics bring to mind Richard Ramirez. Eerie how it suits him. *ominous music plays*

So many bands today, in a number of genres, benefit from the influence of the Kinks, whether they know it or whether anyone recognizes it.

I don't understand this Steve Miller stuff, it's like saying the Beatles sounded like the Monkeys.
