Before I knew KoL the only songs I heard of theirs was "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody" and disliked them immediately. Two years later my friend showed me this song and from there I bought all of their CDs. They are now my favorite band.

Amazing! The 'real' band I first saw in that year live and thought were the best band on the planet for a few years. Where did it all go wrong? Thank you for this it brought back so many memories of all the early gigs of theirs I went to in small British venues, some where ticket touts couldn't give tickets away.
I watch this video almost every single night before I go to sleep. It's such a beautiful song and I like this live version rather than the recorded for some reason. Kings of Leon are amazing, always have been, always will be.

@xarepe1 it's not a 'hipster' way of thinking at all. It's not about the fact that they're well-known now. They were just as well-known back in 2006, just not as commercial. It's about how their music style has changed completely. Their first 3 albums were brilliant in their writing and compelling in their music and then in 2008 it all changed drastically. It's just sad.

The only opposition I have to offer towards your comment is that KoL were being new and creative and trying new things. It's that genius that go them where they are. However, after all that being said, I still love Kings' today. Someday, they'll come back with their old sound and everyone will love it once more. Or at least, I hope so.

Wasnt a huge fan of the last cd but with that said, I still listen to it all the time mixed in with their phenomenal old stuff. It's all good to me. Ive been a fan since Y&YM but I hate people who feel like they need an award for have knowing the band before they made it big or something like that so I make sure im not one of those ppl who argue over that petty crap. Yeah they had some shit songs on the past cd but hell was it really that bad? I still find myself enjoying it

the new stuff is kings of leon too...just like this is ofcourse, but wow...i hate to break it to u, but a bands job is to stay new, creative, try new things, branch out, should i go on? sorry u dont like the newer stuff, but thats a damn shame, u just like the style of the music, not kings of leon themselves, as musicians...how about u pick up an instrument, learn to play, and tell me if u play the SAME THING/STYLE year after year after year..u wont...

I hear this every time, i liked them as a band, to say Because of the times is the same as this is idiotic, yet i love that whole album. and before you lecture me i play guitar i have a 335. They changed their style for commercial reasons not to experiment musicaly. And how is liking their songs/and music and not their current status not liking them "as musicians". To like their music should never be affected by liking them as people so i dont know what you mean by that i'm affraid.

see u ASSUME they changed for commerical reasons..but thats b/c u dont like the new stuff..the fact is (and u should know this b/c u play) that its gonna happen. dont sit their & say its for commercial reasons, just b/c u dont like the new stuff..its the same age old story...its cliche and very lame...they write music for THEM, not anyone else. so dont make up stupid excuses just b/c they didnt go the direction u wanted..running out of room, so shoot me a msg if u really wanna break it all down

I and others like me are not giving ourselves an excuse for not likeing them, your correct its an age old cliche, this is why im so disapointed. To call them sell outs isn't that far from true, take your age old cliche and compare it to the band's story. I still have alot of respect for them and if they decide to release a good 5th then i wont slate it for no reason.
It would seem to most people out there that their style changed in order to become more popular, its every where. dont denie it

i agree that their style has changed alil bit, but its nothing so off course to think that stuff..they're still the KOL, its sounds like a normal progression of style every great band does. and yes, i agree that it is everywhere. but thats ultimately the goal for every artist. and since its still them writing and playing the songs (not manufactured by others) makes all that a good thing. they are still humble and crazy brothers that are still doing the same thing since the beginning having fun

i dont deny its out there, see u think they changed to get more popular. i think they change b/c thats what bands do, and they got more popular, b/c of more radio play. they would have been this big back then, but their sound didnt get to alot of people..and now that it is, u say its for commercial reasons?...it doesnt make any sense. THEY even said THIS is the stuff they wanted to play then, but didnt have the capability to do it, but you STILL say for commercial reasons? its for them..

The only opposition I have to offer towards your comment is that KoL were being new and creative and trying new things. It's that genius that go them where they are. Now, they tend to sound a slightest bit more main stream. Kind of like bencc93 said, they changed for commercial reasons, not for a lack of creativity. However, after all that being said, I still love Kings' today. Someday, they'll come back with their old sound and everyone will love it once more. Or at least, I hope so.

there is no "sound" of mainstream.
& its not for commercial reasons. they still write for them, noone else. they got big b/c of more promotion, simple as that, more radio play.
&, no, they wont go back to their old sound, u know why? b/c its old! what kinda CREATIVITY is it to go back to something uve already done? its just not gonna happen. & there really is no old sound, EVERY CD sounds different, just like a great band is suppose to do..just sucks everyone pisses on a good thing for nothing

They see their music as a career now, creativity is always the force behind 1st and 2nd albums. I'm saying i miss their creativity.

the bottom line is, they use to be urs..when u have a great band as good as these guys, & they arnt famous, its a very intimate feeling. & when they get big, the intimacy is gone..its like the VIP room..it was VIP when only a few people knew about them. but what good is a VIP room if EVERYONE can get in? its no fun anymore thats whats fueling ur opinion
great bands HAVE to see it as a career from the start. they have nothing else.. they did what theyre suppose to do, & u dont respect that?

Obviously it sucks a bit when you loose a "pocket band" as they call it.
But it sucks worse when it isnt because of people catching on to their good music, and catching on to their new guff.
I respect bands need to make money but i dont respect when money drives the writing/producing process. And it quite clearly has, caleb damn near admits it in multiple videos and inter views and articles

and yes ive seen interviews where he talks about money..but what does that have to do with the writing process? making money is awesome, but even they stated this is the music they wish they could have wrote then, they just didnt have the capability to do it. thats what they were gonna do, money or not. the money is just a bonus (as KOL says)
im sorry u feel that way, but money def didnt drive the writing. u gotta c that.

i think if you would just listen to them, without assuming everything, you still could respect them.
listen to the music man...nothing more, and nothing less...just listen to the music. that is the only thing that matters. "cold desert" comes to mind. if any new song could help, it would be that one..written out of pure drunken (freestyling) passion...straight from the heart. he only wrote the lyrics to the first verse, everything else is pure freestyle in the moment for the moment..

Trust me, i bought it the day it came out and cold desert and 17 where my favourites. But honestly i dont even think the music meets their standards.
if they decide to make a good 5th then im not going to hate on it. their just goin thru a bad phase i hope

That makes no sense you cant just get the ability to write, you write what you feel and obviously they felt that money was important so they started writing songs that are very mainstream songs. saying they wish they could have the written the stuff now back then is a lie because then they would have.

u do write what u feel..but u cant just say "i want money" and write a good song, u still have to be good creative artists. u dont get it do u? what do u do with ur life? try to make money? thats what i thought..dont call them out on something that u have to do too..they have nothing else, they HAVE to make money, whether it has to do with the music or not.

you can write a song with money as a motive and still be creative i never implied they lost their creativity but if they really wanted to write the songs they do now back then they would have if you claim the bassist wasnt good enough than they would have got around it somehow because he was fine on the earlier stuff its not like he had no talent

im was (and they were) talking about the whole band, not just the bassist.
even if u can play an instrument good, their still inexperienced with writing music together
do u play an instrument? have u ever started a band? its not as simple as 123
everyone has to like everything, 4 completely different paths have to come to the same thing. & thats not as easy as it sounds, especially when ur starting out. now they know each other better as musicians, so its easier to write what they really want

No they don't! They write the songs themselves. They only had help writing them on the first record. Their producer co-wrote the songs.

and plus...to everyone who is so quick to start to crucify the band for selling out and claiming they are done listening to them, youre all going to sound like some idiotic hypocrites once youre on here praising KOL in 2010 with the next album saying how you always loved this band haha. If any of these people knew anything about music...the first couple albums from most bands are always the most raw, liked, and critically acclaimed. These guys will continue to make good music for years. enjoy it

Wasnt a huge fan of the last cd but with that said, I still listen to it all the time mixed in with their phenomenal old stuff. It's all good to me. Ive been a fan since Y&YM but I hate people who feel like they need an award for have knowing the band before they made it big or something like that so I make sure im not one of those ppl who argue over that petty crap. Yeah they had some shit songs on the past cd but hell was it really that bad? I still find myself enjoying it
