when someone told me Nine Inch Nails made this, i didn't believe them at first. This song hit me differently, its a special breed that makes you sit on a bench at 3am outside on a cold night and think "What the hell am i here for?"
I'm used to play this track right after "Hurt", and then play "12 Ghosts II", "13 Ghosts II" and "36 Ghosts IV". It's like a suite, open to various interpretations, and a great collection of atmospheres so different, yet so close together. It could well adapt as a soundtrack for anyone's life, for it delivers a plethora of feelings and depth of sound.
@KKSlider60 The rest of Ghosts is just random bollocks that starts out good, lures you into a cacophony of useless noise and formless instrumentation with no other reason than to be pretentious, petty, and appeal to the hipster crowd mass market of stereotypical white college students.
@SecuR0M Everything is subjective and left to others' opinions. What you find as hideous may well represent something deep to others, possibly according to their life experiences. There's no "music", no "noise", it's just sound and layers of different atmospheres. Your comment means nothing and all at the same time, so why bothering something you dislike? I suppose I should have expected it from a typical bored Minecraft griever on youtube that likes to destroy others' games... Cheers. /KKS
The only other person to move me without words and a piano is beethoven. trents a genius. Its amazing how he can take such simplistic notes and touch a feeling. This song would be scary if he put words to it. great song. Also love 28 and 34.
The sound of awakening, a beginning. The sounds of voice like winds echo with us as the beats from the earth reverberate through our minds with the deep force of a piano. Somewhere we hear a truth, different versions, echoing within these confines and we find a moment of peace, within these Ghosts.

if any1 likes instrumentals and dark ambients this is THE thing for christmas... check out ghosts 3, 7, 9 and 32 too, theyre pretty good too its only $5 on itunes and amazon
its not the same if you dont listen to all the ghosts in a row from start to finish, that is a real emotional experience, but it is cool to pick out ur favorite bits
Trent is an artistic genius. As some of you have said, he doesn't need lyrics to express. A world class artist. Able to compose and direct the sounds to express a mood, an ambience through his own creative process. Though it is his perceptive fans who are able to enjoy this kind of unique art, which much is open to perceptive interpretation. No doubt, it is true to Trent's nature. His abilities are stunning. I love it.
I remember driving through Galveston one week after Ike hit. I was listening to this track and driving through the devestation. I wish I had captured it on video as the song really fit the mood
I love this song... The whole ghosts album is soooooooooo visual... like a story to every song I love it! This song makes me think of like a demolished city... kind of like I am legend... I don't know that's just me I guess
it makes me think of a cold and frosty but sunny fall day on the country side ... You feel the cold air filling your lungs every breath, but the sunshine warms your skin ... there are no leaves on the trees and they look like skeletons, and the soil is covered with withered, brown leaves and gras ... hehe, I don't know that's just me I guess =)
@SgtThomy everybody has different thoughts with trent reznors music, thats what make it so powerful, i envision a identity-less man, walking on an empty dirtroad, and the world around him seems dead and lifeless, i notice a strange similarity between my thought and yours......hes not dead, although everything else is
does this song remind anyone else of the legend of zelda? not old school zelda...im talking specifically about the legend of zelda: ocarina of time and the legend of zelda: majora's mask...two amazingly extraordinary games, this music so reminds me of them..maybe because it's similar to the in-game music..
Actually, it reminds me of the Silent Hill series. Specifically, it has that same atmosphere of isolation and desolation that makes the games so scary.
This is absolutely beautiful music. I am attempting to figure out how to play this. The piano part shouldn't be TOO hard, but the rest of it could give me problems. Thank you Trent and everyone else who worked on this song. I love it
I hate this Mp3 age we're in but I reckon I'll probably get the CD. I haven't really listened to NIN before but what I've heard of Ghosts so far is pretty awesome.
Anyone who's listening to Ghosts heard the Quake soundtrack also made by Trent? It's along similar lines, instrumental-atmospheric-minimalist, but more industrial gloom-n-doom.
I haven't had a PC since 2000- but I keep my Quake disc close as it's a mini NIN album to me. Yeah Mac! I miss shootin' guys with my nail gun though.... :)
This is such a wonderful song to open Ghosts with as it conveys that sense of loss in life that we all encounter and wish to be rid of, so we go to our dreams, our memories. Halfway through, it begins building into that tension, the impatience to begin the reality of our minds, and slowly fades away from hurt, into the dream. I think Trent's amazing if he can do that simply with sounds and not have to tell the story with lyrics. It shows his genius in understanding the mind and conveying it.
@kaoritsukino I guse it means we all have a form of synesthesia when it comes to sound. only that it evokes similar emotions rather than a confusion of the other senses
@kaoritsukino This comment is so pretentious and hipster. It literally hurts me. The first half of this song is my reading the comment, followed by my personal self-bereavement at having sunk so low on the musical ladder that I'm actually listening to NIN.
@godimtired A very ignorant and elitist position to take. Music is completely subjective and your failure to understand such, shows how little you really understand about music.
