  • This book was written with love, highly recommended, you can tell he was loved by almost all.

  • The physician listening to his chest in the beginning is Dr. Hunter Thompson.

  • I am blessed to have met her . She is a great Woman.

  • Crystal you are the best !

  • I have been a "Z" fan since 1976, I was surprised to find how many songs he had penned. My wife and I were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary with a long weekend, amazingly I switched the cd player off and found a R&R station when they announced the passing of Warren, as we were driving to our destination. We just looked at each other and both began to get emotional---sounds a little corny, but she and I met at a concert at John Carroll University in Ohio, where he was performing RIP!

  • very touching .. i must get the book.

  • FYI. This is Warren's sister, not his wife.

  • @emediex This is Warren's ex-wife, the only woman he ever married. It's all in the book. A great book, I might add.

  • @emediex it's Warrens ex wife.

  • Comment removed

  • @emediex Crystal Zevon is the ex-wife and was a long time friend of Warren Zevon and is the mother of Ariel Zevon.

  • You know, regarding his IQ, it was disgustingly high. I know that for a fact. I'm not gonna expose the exact figure here, but rest assured, "above Einstein" is a little bit of an understatement. Believe it.

  • How could anyone dislike this?

  • Warren Zevon was a guy who grew up at a great disadvantage: Zero parenting, drug/booze abuse. He left a legacy of great music.

More importantly, he seems to have gained the respect of his family at the end of his life, and lived long enough to know his grandchildren, despite battling an awful disease. We should all do so well.

  • @porchdog1961 Well, his dad was a gangster and did "buy" him an expensive car when he was young (hence the line in Lawyers, Guns and Money "Dad, get me out of this"). Guess he took his hardships and made the best out of them.

  • After reading I"LL SLEEP WHEN I"M DEAD i will never say i know how he felt but i can identify with how he felt...being a fellow alcoholic ..Thank God for AA!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I've gotta buy this book. Love Warren. Thank you, Crystal.

  • Warren and Chrystal's journey has been great to share. His individuality and creative way of expressing himself has been part of my life for 30 years. Thanks Warren.. I love every sandwich. :))

  • The fact that some 30 years after their 5 year marriage ended, she is still going by the name zevon says quite a bit about this lady. The book reads like a tortured ex-wifes revenge more than the life and times of a rock singer.

  • Crystal has been abused by a rock and roll star. She hung on because of her own low self image. Procreated 2 children by a self indulgent man. It was all about Warren and not about herself. She cries but Warren finally broke her own chains. Crystal needs alot of self help. She's a victim of her own abuse.

  • @k3304 you MUST be a republican, a victim in your own right

  • @jgmdjsmm , i see you got thru your "shellacking" last November

  • @jgmdjsmm yeah rebublicans piss me off too

  • @k3304 You've never loved or been loved have you?

  • It's obvious she's refering to the term "Einstein" as a figure of speech! So everyone, backoff! He WAS a genious in his own way! That's a real woman simply sharing her feelings & emotions ...Thank You Crystal! I was fortunate enough to see Warren in NY back in 1994 in a 3000 seat auditorium..a show I will never forget.

  • Send Lawyers, Guns an Money thats the name of my truck, love warren Zevon an yes what a lady,

PS My truck is the one in the left lane, were the Canadian Left Lane Gang

    R.I.P Warren Zevon

  • Yes, the lady has class.... thank you, Crystal

  • ok so to end this "Einstein IQ" discussion, Einstein NEVER had his IQ measured. Some experts have put it between 160-190, but nothing will ever be proven in regards to his IQ. As for Warren, I'm not sure what his was, however considering "genius level" IQ begins at 140, (in a real test, not a phoney online test) and he reportedly had a very very high IQ, is it possible for him to be around einstien's IQ level? Yes. Will we ever know? No, but he wrote damn good songs didn't he?

  • IQ well above Einstein??....come on girl....do you acctually know who Einstein was?....don't think so....I love Warren to bits though and nice choice of wife in my opinion....humble and dignified...But "well above Einstein"??...why do people say garbage like that?...did He invent a cure for cancer, aids or create electricity?...no he "only" wrote bloody good songs..

  • @cantonadenmark You know, I believe the man with the highest recorded I.Q. in the word currently works as a bouncer in a bar. He is unable to really hold down a solid job or relate well with people. I don't think you can necessarily draw a line between I.Q. and accomplishments. You do not have to become a doctor or a scientist just because you have a high I.Q. Apparently Warren was off the charts when tested in school.

  • @carrots001 Yep, I don't really like to talk about it but I'm in upper Mensa level and it's not fun. It's a loneliness. My wife is a Polymath and while her scope is broad which gives her satisfaction, mine is much more specific which can be very frustrating and alienating.

  • @cantonadenmark Oh if I'd read this before I responded to your other comment I wouldn't have bothered... yeah most of us 'smart people' ignore ignoramouses, you really sell yourself short there with "create electricity". It can be so hard to explain to people who just don't understand how shit works - that's how shit gets fucked up.

  • Wslyder is so smart. The world can only wonder if he had only applied himself to being something other than an azzwipe

  • "Warren's IQ was greater than Einstein's" ??? I love the guy and his music, but let's please get a little perspective!

  • @morontay Hey Moron tayzed... One can have an incredibly high IQ and not apply himself to physics, comprende usted? I have a high IQ and I choose to be cynical and snide, especially with people like you.

  • @morontay ....I think you are absolutely right..I think that Warren WAS extremely intelligent..but greater than Albert...c'mon.! He was like 210 or close to it..

  • @arturoewallih 210 !!! Not likely! 185 or so. You've got to remember (Well you don't really have to unless you think it means something) that Intelligence Quotient (IQ) tests were designed by people who thought they knew what intelligence 'might be'. Although they profess independance and all sorts of bullshit all they really did was set tests along the lines of what THEY thought represented intelligence. So... What do YOU think would be a test of intelligence?

  • yes, what a classy sharp lady, indeed. smart finds smart.

  • A lot of stories about W.Z. in Danny Goldberg"s book Bumping into genius' that led me to these vids.

  • What a lovely lady in every sense of the word. Warren was a LUCKY guy, I think he knew how lucky at the end.

  • No. I actually had a professional relationship with this woman. I find her incredibly opportunistic and classless.

  • @dcparr00 You need to elaborate a bit, 'cause at this point you're just making baseless acusations.

  • Yeah Warren saw the underbelly of life but he married this classy crystal blue persuasive lady so that shows his sentimental hygiene.

  • There's no doubt in my mind that Warren Zevon is one the most under-rated, under-appreciated musicians ever. His wit and music was exceptional and it's sad to me that he wasn't more widely known. And yes, Crystal is indeed a class act. Kudos to both of them. Miss ya, Warren. When we meet in the big Party Land in the Sky, I'll make sure to bring some lawyers, guns, and money!

  • When I read this book I kept thinking it was a HUGE, HUGE mistake for him to have lost Crystal.

  • Dear Crystal,

Thank you for the book. Bought it yesterday. I had no idea. I loved Warren's music but....he was....anyway, thanks for telling the unvarnished truth. Just an...he was Warren. I hope my children don't grow up this way. I never knew he was...okay, I didn't want to say it but if there were a competition for A-Hole of the 20th Century, he would be in the Top Ten. Genius or not. Even Einstein was a nasty person when it came to relationships. And Warren did to. Both smart....both loved.

  • There are some interesting stories about Warren in Jon Stebbins' "The Lost Beach Boy" about David Marks. I guess David and Warren were friends for a long time during and after the Marksmen period (post Beach Boys).

  • THANK -YOU, I don't have anything else to add,except,thank-you.

You knew Warren better than any of us ever will have, and I personally appreciate the fact that you would be willing to tell the rest of us the whole story. Thanks again Crystal.

  • I am amidst your book. I have to play the works while I read. And I am convinsced that while Warren was a great writer, if you took a poll of the biggest Jerk of the latter half of the 20th Century, he would well placed. Even above Balloon boy. I love Warren's music, but he was a real jerk. And that's sad. Liked your book.

  • BULLSHIT@!

  • fans of Warren Zevon might want to know that there is an interesting cover of Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner on Naomi Bedfords my space

  • When I hear people say someone's "IQ" is well above Einstein's, or whichever historical public Genius is selected for comparison, I cringe..real fact #1. IQ is a real messed up piece of bad mathematics, and right-wing eugenic philosophy,_the potential of anyone's ability cannot be empirically quantified like voltage... let's just say Mr Zevon was gifted.

  • aspen is a beautiful place i live here in the colorado rockies, inspiration, beauty, love come visit and enjoy

  • Crystal's compiled a neat little oral history here. A great read for even a casual fan of Warren's music. (Full disclosure---I jumped on the Zevon bandwagon as soon as I heard "Outside Chance" by the Turtles...a Zevon-penned tune that sounds like a Stones song that got away). Gives you some great etymoligical insight into how a lot of his songs got written. If ya want dirt, there's plenty unvarnished detritus here. But it's obvious that Crystal wrote this with a lotta love.

  • Crystal forever a treasure !

  • I have to get this book! Looks like im headed to the local bookshop

  • C, your book was good, but you are aces, bless you for being you, Warren didn't know what he was missing then, but I'm sure he does now? Smiling down on you I'm sure! keep up the smiles and good work!

  • What happened to the audio? Please fix.

  • 4:10-4:20 ! life

  • He Is Missed

  • Thank you Mrs. Zevon. I have been a fan of your late husband since late 1977 and it still pains me that he is dead. The book you wrote is great and made me wish even more that I could have known him personally. I still kick myself in the ass for having never seen him live. But hey, thank you again for the book. I read it all in one day.

  • The book was incredible. Warren was one of my personal heroes.

Thank you, Crystal. Thank you for doing such a great job.

  • agree word4word w/ your comment & i do mean word4word but after reading the bio z became just another fallen idol ... an immensely - immensely - gifted jerk (pronounced 'asshole') it's rather obv too mrs z never stopped loving him ... but what goes between 2 people is between them sounds like they made their peace was warren 'cool'? w/o a doubt but so is refridgerated feces (sounds like a wz song title) thumbs downs incoming peace just the same
  • :'(

  • Thank You Crystal,, You are a great, kind, and brave lady....for sharing what is something so close to your heart...

    Thank You

  • Crystal you have touched my life in more ways than you will ever know .

  • me too

    thanks

  • Wow. Very moving. I got to get the book. Stay strong.God bless!

  • Beautiful

  • I met Ariel in Barre, VT. where my mother and sister live. Great girl. Best of luck to you and her and all other family. Warren was one of my favorite musicians. May he rest in peace.

  • That was very funny, the part about him pretending to be a skier at the bar. He was a great live performer.

  • beautiful

  • crystal we met along time ago in woodstock with Marc Elliot.

I got to know Warren a bit.

You have done a fabulous job

hope you have a beautiful life ahead

  • in the middle of the book now.

  • ... so we made it to the front porch, didn't we ole girl...

  • As great as Warren was, he also picked a lady with unbelievable class.

  • Amen

  • The Woman stepped up to the plate when others close to him did Nothing.

  • I saw him at Uncle Sams at Nantasket beach in Hull around 1980.

  • What part of Mass. are you from? I saw many shows back in the late 70's and early 80's.

  • I wish I'd seen him live.

its pretty hard to come to terms with not being able to.

  • Warren Zevon was the greatest of all time. Part of me is glad he didn't have a mainstream following. The masses are too simple to get the depth of his music and lyrics.

I believe Crystal was the great love of his life and have no doubt he wanted her to write the book. It is a great book and WZ lived like a rock star for better or worse.

  • I totally agree with this, particularly with her being the great love of his life. I've got one of those and Crystal speaking of this made me cry as well.

  • Thank you,Crystal!Great book for a great man!!RIP,Warren Zezon.

  • I bought and read the book and saw Zevon play the old roadhouse on Hwy 99 in Seattle a few times. I saw his truck/van/rv in the parking lot. He traveled light.

I can see him telling his wife to print the whole story. Zevon wasn't afraid of anything.

  • i saw him open for the grateful dead in santa barbara in 78 or 79. he was drunk and at one point called the deadheads "a bunch of acid casualties". he played a great and enjoyable set, but i'll never forget how he "bum tripped" so many deadheads with his remarks. we just laughed nervously like beavis & butthead. hells angels were there and had 2 or 3 bikes on stage as jerry g and the dead jammed away. what a day."send lawyers, guns, and money...the shit has hit the fan."

  • Seems like she had an ax to grind, but we have to take her word that Zevon supposedly wanted his dirty laundry out there for everybody to see. Sorry, I don't buy what she's selling one bit. I bought the book, but I don't buy her justification and rationalization for getting it out there.

  • Do some research, it was what he wanted. He alluded to that fact a lot in the last year of his life.

  • Baloney. If he read that book today, he'd beat his ex-wife all over again.

  • good reply Drew Gooden, Solid!

  • I bought his "white" vinyl album and actually had to order it at Rock of Ages in Pekin, Il my hometown! Still have it! RIP Warren! There will surely be a helluva concert later!

  • Crystal,

Thanks for keeping him alive with your love for so long. I think about his songs everyday. His music is still alive in my heart.

  • I gonna buy that book. This is one extraordinary insight into the life of an artist. Artists don't know how not to tell the truth. It's a gift and a curse...'brain to tongue.' No filter. (Geo. Martin on John Lennon) And what a partner in Crystal Zevon. CBS and Letterman should do a cable series retro on Late Night and bring her in.

    Thanx for the upload. Precious.

    NF

  • Warren was great in concert. I saw him several times at the road house in Seattle.

  • this is beautiful-thank you!

  • Read it during the winter of 2007-08 when I was moving. Couldn't put it down.

  • yea i know excitable boy is the title that would win out, its the "hollywood" title, and i know you are right, but in the book warren in a diary entry says he dreamed he was naked at the circus, a uniquickly zevon thought, would love to see a real different title ,like the man himself.

  • i agree his life and times should be a movie,it could only be called excitable boy i think, but for a great songwriter such as zevon,it would be great to see the masses really get to know who he was and his music

  • What a blessed man he was to have you in his life... Even through his "stuff" he knew you were his girl... And, you were his girl... It doesn't get better than that, you can't ask for more than that,,, You are the Genius and he knew that... What every man hopes and dreams of... You are what he hated to leave most....

  • I read your book and I want to thank you Crystal for your insight and courage. It couldn't have been a easy task to undertake, but I'm so glad you did! I have been a fan of Warren Zevon's for many years and respect and understand him even more after learning that he's human and fallible. Thank you for your honesty and courage.

You are a beautiful person and I admire you so much.

Wishing you the best on your journey.

  • to czevon, have all of warrens recordings, love them all. wanted to let you know how much i enjoyed the book. should be a movie. you could call it Zevon:Naked at the circus, i bet he would love that

  • With all due respect, you're wrong. Just about every song on "The Wind" is a gem. The last 17 years of Zevon's life/career were mostly sober, and if all you ever heard was Werewolves/LawyersGunsMoney, you've missed the point.

  • I've heard it. I disagree.

And how do you tell someone they are "wrong" on an issue of artistic taste?

Honey, when it comes to art, everyone's opinion is equally valid.

  • You know he was something special--warts and all--when his ex. still obviously cared for him so. Being loved IS the best drug.

  • Im confused. I a Zevon fan, but not fanatical enough to know his life's details. Who was the hot blonde in the documentary when he's leaving NYC?

  • thank you. six extraordinary minutes

  • enjoyed the book a lot.

  • thank you and Warren for all the memories God Speed

  • We remember Spain in 1975, Crystal.......let's have some gazpacho in Sitges again! All the best old girl, Pat and Patty

  • Whoa... what a surprise. Where are you? Yes, gazpacho in Sitges. Count me in! Crystal

  • Keep him in your thoughts for a while.

  • I'm reading this book right now; I can't put it down; what a story! A must read; thank you.

  • Love is all about making it to the "Front Porch"...

  • ONE IN A MILLION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Crystal: Warrens music and voice brings me up daily. I drive a truck and sing about 15 of his songs daily. He has made my life a bit easier to live. Thank you for the very hard struggle to tell your collective story. -Paul J

  • @politicalkook what an incredible thing to say "he has made my life easier to live".you saying that about music has made my life easier to live, you must be a very interesting human being paul j,and i hope you see this comment.thank you!Spencer j.

  • @politicalkook Amen.

  • Crystal you are one in a million.

  • what an interesting life R I P

  • God bless you Crystal

  • It takes a special sort of bravery to take on the requested task and complete it in the manner it was delivered. Knowing the background stories after years of simply being mystified by the musical genius lends a certain introspection to the concept that WZ was just a guy.. we all got our problems, too.

  • Crystal as i had said from the day we met you are my Hero i love you always, Gary

  • One hellava lady!!!

  • kudos and then some to this wonderful woman for taking on this enormous project, keeping WZ alive in our hearts - Crystal - we LOVE you!!!!
