IF you think AMBX is shit, you have not tried it yet!
I bought mine about a year ago, half way through the year I moved house and they broke during the move (they fell down the stairs) and my games seemed...dull!
The next week I bought myself the same pack again and its the best investment I have ever made!
I can see amBX in a darkened room on a monitor working. But with a projector it's pretty pointless. Unless you've got a decent projector with a high ANSI Lumens rating and good contrast ratio - those blinking lights that get brighter will actually make your screen look worse/dimmer! It's a nice idea, but it seems more of a spur of the moment purchase than something you'd spend weeks and week researching.
uh, who the f*ck wants 2 big lights infront of a projector screen to ruin the whole picture? Even infront of a monitor blinking lights doesnt make much sense since the screen itself can do that on its own.
its not distracting, you get used to it and it makes it easier to for instance, look at the ground wich is dark, then look up all of a sudden, towards a bright sky, in HL² it always hurted my eyes :s
I bought it worried that it would be distracting, boy was I wrong. The only "distracting" part about this system is constantly wondering in the back of my head when more games will start supporting it.
I'd highly, HIGHLY, recommend the amBX system to anyone to try something new.
How is it not distracting? Can you explain your setup? I actually think the wind effects might be cool, but the flashing lights seem like they would just draw attention back to the room rather than the screen.
The flashing lights are definitely the most immersive part of the system, for me at least. My setup is pretty basic, just one light and fan on each side of my monitor along with the wall washer in back and the rumblepad in front of my keyboard.
The thing is, when you're focused on the game the lights don't take that focus away from it, for me at least. i.e. when I'm shooting from a turret in CoD4 the entire room lights up in flashes of white and orange. It's not distracting, it's immersive.
