I bought this movie a week ago, knowing pretty much nothing about it except that William Hootkins (one of my favourite actors, he plays Mr. X!) had a part in it. What a nice and fun movie! I couldn't stop smiling while I was watching it. The movie was great, the acting was incredible and it was just so uplifting! It was such a great surprise. I wish more comedies were like this one. :D
The Orginal Titel is " Adieu mein kleiner Gardeoffizier" from the great Robert Stolz. 1880-1975. Liane Haidt 1895-2000 sing this Song in her Motion Film "Das lied ist aus"
My Dad was a compare at the Labour club in Chester during the sixties and seventies and always sang this song at which evryone got out there hankies and waved them great memories thank you Dad and of course Joe.
My dad sang exactly like Joseph Locke, he gave a rendition of Goodbye as i brought him out of the hospital to all the patients, it was really moving.....Joseph Locke and Dougie Portz ...you did it your way...Love daughter...Lynne
Sorry everyone - Ned Beatty never sang a note in this film. Locke songs were charmingly and convincingly imitated by Vernon Midgley, son of the English opera tenor Walter Midgley. He doesn't have quite the chesty ring of Locke, but who did in this material?
what a singer joe was! the real deal, look at the shite we have to put up with now' robbie williams and tom jones! for fuck sake somebody just shoot them and do us all a favour!
Agree with mudfries, my late father used to say some music was so emotional it could bring tears to your eyes, when I listen to this, it brings on the same emotions, not so with the modern 'singers' who couldnt hold a candle to Josef .RIP, Sir you were a legend
@scabbernacker sorry pal, I shoud'nt have said that! I cant even remember commenting on this video! it must have been one of my friday nights on the red wine again, lethal! anyway, I have'nt got any room to talk, up here in scotland we have more than our fair share of cheesy singers! Hear my song is still a fantastic movie after all this time.
Regarding @ 3:29. If your on about the 'big guy' with grey hair and beard clapping... I'd be more inclined to say it's another of Ireland's greatest singers... Ronnie Drew. But then
At 3:29, I was referring to the guy with the beard clapping sitting next to the guy who played the accordion in the 'Hear my Song' video. If I knew who he was I wouldn't have asked. Just curious is all. He looks a lot like Jack Elam.,
"There won't be a dry seat in the house!" The US DVD of "Hear My Song" was supposed to be re-released in Nov 06, and it's been unavailable in the UK & Eire for years except from Germany. AmazonUK has a 27 July 09 release set(I've pre-ordered it). The original US VHS/theatrical release omitted the opening scene, when Mickey & Fintan are visiting Mickey's Mum in the hospital, but I bought a UK PAL VHS before going to the UK in '03, so was able to finally see that scene. It's just a great film.
I'm in Chicago where its 20-F and I'm being hammered with snow. I watch this video on my ipod while waiting for the train and I feel like its the middle of summer. This clip makes my blood boil, I love it so much. I wish this movie was on dvd.
darkdolores, you may prefer Vernon's, but Josef's voice was a lot bigger & had a more focused top. He also had a faster vibrato, particularly from the bridging notes up, that made his voice more virile. Vernon has a nice, similar sounding voice, & there is no reason from the perspective of personal taste why you shouldn't prefer him, but Josef had a better voice, & Vernon would be the first to admit it. It's not coincidence that Josef was famous in the UK & Ireland & Vernon is not.
Hear My Song is out on DVD now....it finally got released in July 2009. It's currently only £4.99 on Amazon...a real bargain. I notice it has a run time of 109 minutes, too, and my off air recording is only 100 minutes...so I reckon it must be an extended version. I've just ordered the DVD myself.
I loved this film when it first came out. Ned Beatty did a fabulous job of lip synching - and acting, of course!
But it's only fair to give credit to the singer whose voice we are listening to. It's Vernon Midgley doing an excellent imitation of the great Joe Locke.
The song, by the way, isn't Irish. It's from a Viennese operetta, originally in German.
Thanks for posting this video. Great movie, great song, just before Joe Locke makes another escape. Maybe it isn't on TV because it shows you can beat the system.
It has been on T.V., Oeiras {Dad} I`ve still got the video. It was probably made by some Irish T.V. company--hence the anti English theme. Joe was a typical Irishman unwilling to part with his hard earned cash to the British taxman, bless him. Stan
an exert from a brilliant story, fun film, watch out for the copper enjoying the song
