Everytime I hear the line "The jukebox kept on playing Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" I say it would have been impossible to hear Sgt Pepper on a jukebox in 1967. Neither that song nor any other songs from that album were released as 45 RPM singles in 1967, which is what most 60's jukeboxes play. Howerver, "Sgt. Pepper" backed with "A Day In The Life" was released as a single in 1978, probably to compete with the Bee Gees Sgt Pepper movie of that year.
@tamspeci How pedantic is that?..do you know i have been in radio for 3 decades, have played the song many many times and never ever thought of that ...its called poetic license I reckon.Sgt Pepper was never realeased as a single, in this part of the world, which is a pity, mind you niether was Led Zeps Stairway to heaven,(I was the first radio presenter to play that in new zealand, I neeeded a long track for a toilet break, and stuck that song on, the phones went crazy.:)
@bidgeums I appreciate it's poetic license, I was just being technical. But it's not completely true Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin was never released as a single. It wasn't released commercially as a single, all right, but it was released a promotional single for radio stations. In one of my record collector books is a picture of the promo 45 single of Stairway To Heaven & it has all 8 minutes of the song.
Thanks for uploading this song. I was in college in the Philippines living in a small boarding house, this song keeps me going in hard times... Love the song so much

otherwise,it comes to political correctness or international politics..
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a mockery! Of course Johnny Rivers belongs in it. So do The Moody Blues, Carly Simon and others. They leave out deserving artists and put in people like George Clinton and Funkadelic, Mahalia Jackson, Bill Monroe. The list of those who should be in and aren't and those who are in but shouldn't be goes on and on. The RR Hall of Fame has no credibility!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
even thou i luv johnny's music it's all cover songs he doesn't deserve like many other bands that did there own music to be in the rok and roll fame, if that's wat makes a musician in yur mind
@dictator54- we are all entitled to our own opinion! I think Johnny Rivers SHOULD be in the Rock "n Roll Hall of Fame. He did have a lot of hits with cover versions that is true. He was a writer on "Poor Side of Town" which was his only #1 song. His cover versions (in my opinion) most of the time were as good or better than the original. He was one of the few American acts that still had hits during the British Invasion! I believe he made a significant impact on Rock music! Ron
@rwells47 Nicely put there Ron...I was 5 and my mom was young and would go see him @ the Whisky in 1964 and on. She would tell me how good he was. I grew up listening to Johnny and more. I went to work in the music biz in Hollywood and more. I saw a ton of bands and acts on the strip and arenas. Meet Johnny many times and he was one of the best acts out there. Played Guitar like a southern boy should..ha He is a top notch musician and artist. He is so underrated. His voice is golden.
@dictator54 don,t judge 40 year old real music by today,s techno /hiphop crap; record any of this sound pollution you call music today, with what j.r. and everybody else had to work with and it sound like a herd of chimps screamim n beatin garbage can lids.
@dictator54 Please refresh my memory. I can't remember which group or artist recorded Poor Side of Town & made it famous before Johnny stole it from them. All I know is I grew up on & still love his music...& I think my sister still has a crush & never got over him. God bless & long live the great Johnny Rivers ! !
@fab4fan4ever64- yes there is something wrong with the RRHOF when Johnny Rivers isn't in the Hall. Also Tommy James & The Shondells and Three Dog Night should be in there too! I think there is too much politics involved- especially when these acts are NOT in and Rap groups etc. ARE in. Ron
@rwells47 Ditto!!! I grew up listening to Johnny and the rest of the bands you mentioned and can't believe they're not in the HOF. What a sham Madonna is in but not Tommy James OR 3 Dog Night.
@rwells47 You're absolutely right. Man this guy had nothing but talent & should be in the Hall of Fame. And excuse me but NO rap groups should have ever been inducted. They need a separate Rap Hall of Fame for them. Don't contaminate the true rockers like Chuck Berry, The Beatles, etc. with the rap crap ! !

This is one of my favorite songs from the 60s. In 1969 I was in Nha Trang, Vietnam sitting in a Club watching a Korean band play this song, hacking the H*** out of the lyrics, but they had the musical instruments right on... so me and about 100 fellow troops drank our military beer and watered down mixed drinks thinking of the day when we'd all be home... singing in the "Summer Rain" It was a fine day when I came home one week before the Woodstock Festival meeting my family at the airport.
Just a few nights ago - between the last day of summer and the first day of fall - I rode my bike to the station for coffee - it was raining - The crowd in the station (a couple of WWII vets who almost live there, some young girls who also almost live there, and some other people who were just buying gas or groceries) were amazed to see a bicyclist in such weather.
