This movie has that affect on it's viewers for sure. As a filmmaker, I admire it's strong storytelling ability. And I think Stallone's performance was at his finest. The sound track makes this scene magical. Rocky is getting clobbered as the music builds up, until the poignant pause just as Rocky gets knocked down. Then the most emotional and climactic theme of the music as Rocky is struggling to stand up is guaranteed to make your tears well up. And what great drama in the round's final exchange, the music accenting every fierce punch Rocky throws to Apollo's ribs until the tolling of the bell in time with the beat of the music. A masterpiece of a climax.

The cinematographic value is the fact that Rocky lost this fight in details versus a giant champion and this lost was greater than a win (all the emotional atmosphere is pure heroic). That's why the first "Rocky" was,is and will be the greatest of all the Rocky series.
