@jackhillty As to whether Captain Beefheart was turning his recorder on and off while recording 'Orange Claw Hammer,' I understand he was using a voice activated mic so the recorder was turning on and off with each between stanzas. I doubt if he was making this up as he went along. He was notorious for endless merciless practicing. I have read that he forced the to practice the cuts on 'Trout Mask Replica' for a full year and then recorded the album in five hours.
