I think Team AWD is just a group of misunderstood guys who just want to seem cool.

For those not in the know, the Japanese name, "Team MAD", come from the first letters of each Pokemon's Japanese names (romanized):

M = Manyuura (Weavile)

A = Aabokku (Arbok)

D = Dorapion (Drapion)

As you might notice, only Weavile's name is completely different.
