@chaiter1 I agree. My channel goal is to create a museum of the best of a century of music. 800 playlists cover 500 artists, 100 genres & almost every year back to 1870. It's a musical time machine. chuck
Clara Rockmore performed Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise" in a fine documentary on the Theramin, which I think was simply called "Theramin". The brief scene of her doing that piece was from the 1920s, shortly after Russian inventor Leo Theramin invented during the innovative early Soviet era (before Stalin imposed Soviet Realism and snuffed out any tendencies toward avante gardism in the arts).
I dunno who may say that a theremin is not an instrument! And if it has midi, this gem can play almost anything as any midi controller, but with the highest sensitivity you may never find nowhere else, so it has no other instrument in comparison. It's like playing pure analogic, with far more control than the midi-wind WMX5 or the midi-violin from yamaha...
I'd be curious to find out whether the concept of "key signatures" are relevant to playing the theremin, and if so, how. Like does she play in the "key of e minor""?
Western musical notation is based on the keyboard with its arrangement of black and white notes. All standard chromatic instruments (and ones with less notes) can use the western treble clef/bass clef combo (or other clefs) and the theremin is no different.
The theremin needs to be tuned to whatever space it is moved into. You tune it by using a trim dial to adjust the receptivity to what you are used to. Moving it from one place to another can put the range all out of whack.
@bckm54 Yes, it probably does. Key signiture's are in all instruments and it just tells you what notes to play within a certain scale. So if she was playing it in the key of E minor she would use the notes E F# G A B C D, where as in the key of D minor, is she uses D E F G A Bb C. it would essentially just raise the song a whole step. if she knew where every note was on the theramin (which i'm sure she did) she would probably be able to transcribe it after she figured out which notes to play
I've been listening to theremin vids, and most of the players have rather vague control. Even the best haven't the precision or the feeling of this lady. Wow!!
Agreed. There are moments where it shifts to a pitch that sounds almost identical to a voice. But then the next moment I perceive a stringed instrument.
Try this, Record different musical instruments onto your computer and play them back with the oscilloscope visualization. just pure violin, pure theremin, pure vocal, pure whistling,Etc. some waveform patterns will look very similar. Theremin looks like a hybrid between vocal AHH, and violin.
excelent! i just found this instrument and i liked it a lot. im playing this concerto in the violin, and i just found it with a bit too much vibrato, it would be excelent to hear it like a real violin, with different speeds of vibrato, but everything else was very good
this is art *-*

yes, it is a guess in that way.
There is no exactness about it.
We just do the best we can with the voice.
It facinates the heck out of me.
On a piano, the note you hit is the note you get.
There is no way to express the feelings I get from hearing this "NON" instrument:"
It's too weird and too lovely at the same time.
Nhlvrnfla 2 years ago
Technically, by definition a Theremin IS an instrument.

The theremin in my opinion is the closest instrument to the human voice aside from the violin
