You might try a drop or two of super glue on the opposite side of the slotted disk, in an attempt to balance against vibrations. If you can get it fully balanced, at least at operating speed, there will be very will sound beyond some wind noise and the motor. This will change its final rotation speed though, if only slightly.
can no one put like some kind of godamn glass casing or something around those things I mean what if a baby just walks into your room and tries to touch it.
replay the video with the sound ON, and try to imagine if you would bare this noise in a room ... the best security is that this clock is only a technical prototype and will never be used as a real clock :-)
The disk is "transparent" because of the slice within the hard disk platter... When it is turning around fast, you see everything behind the platter for a short time, that looks somehow like partly transparency.
This has got nothing to do with the "stroboscopic effect" of the led flashing.
The only thing to do with the LEDs is: Flash at the moment the "hole" in the platter is at the correct place. Somehow very easy PWM but it is hard to get that idea =)
Yes you are right it is not a "real" stroboscopic effect... but jus the led switched On/off at the right exact time.
Coding this is not that easy... (trust me) with a high speed disk... the jitter induced by the interrupt (to handle the usb and the leds) is a little visible. This is the reason why the clock arms are not "that" stable !
Hey kids! Do you like to tell time AND pop acid? Well, then do I HAVE THE CLOCK FOR YOU!

диск после пропила - надо отбалансировать - и шуметь не будет - а то его работы хватит на пару часов..

@XFolf
Yes you are right.
Wath I did is to estimate the amnout of steel removed in the slot + the magnet weight.
Then I have added two smal pieces of lead exactly the same weight and epoxy glued.
And you can hear the resulr :-) It's better but...

Is it just me or did the disks become transparent..?
tracytbattle 1 month ago
@tracytbattle It's just you :-)
You get this impression because of the stroboscopic effect due to the fast switching ON/OFF of the leds.

Can you make it like.. less loud?
OldSerpentOfSin 1 month ago
@OldSerpentOfSin
I wouldn't say yes...because this disk is a fast one, so the rotation speed induces a lot of noise because of the hole in the disk side...
