the survivability of the wooden wonder both as a weapon & a legend will remain - whatever you or I say, such is the irrelevance of opinion - if u feel so strongly why don't you rip the video, & repost it with your own audio
The Germans admired the Mosquito immensely. They also never had a satisfactory answer for it. Only their fastest machines had any kind of chance dealing with it.
Interesting comments Billy, Thanks! If the allies only used Mossies, would they have fallen into the same trap as the Luftwaffe? If the Luftwaffe had a Heavy bomber during the Battle of Britain, would the outcome have been different?
Its doubtful they had plenty of targets they could of hit quite effectively with the bombers they had in 1940 . I think the German BoB campaign lacked clarity of purpose it was tactics rather than weaponry that let them down .
The Heinkel 111 and Junkers 88 were perfectly adaquate aircraft,it was tactics that let the down . The Germans lacked a clearly defined achievable goal in 1940,they were in effect bluffing with a bust hand .
To restart the thread though. Do you think that bomber command would have done better if they forgot the 'Heavies' & just made more Mossies, & only attacked specific targets?
I doubt it - the Lancaster could carry a load of 10000lbs to Berlin on 4 engines the Mossie managed 4000lbs on 2 plus - with modification the Lanc could carry up to 22000lbs.
@billyconnearly even if the mossie carried only 4000lb, it could get to Berlin twice in the time the Lanc got there and back, required half the engine production, a quarter of the trained aircrew and could outrun most of the fighters. Same bomb load as a B17 but a bigger single bomb (I've read)! Not a total replacement for the heavies but perhaps a more cost effective option for many of their tasks?
Were those cylindical bombs cookies like the Lancaster ones? I didn't know the mossies loaded cookies (and I had an uncle in a Mossie squadron) so hey-you learn something every day!
If you're looking for a specific target in the middle of enemy territory obv. you a need a navigator but Mozzies were also used for flying over the channel shooting up anything made of metal prior to D-Day. This is what I had in mind when I made my comment.
The British bomber command should have replaced their Lancasters with the Mosquito. They lost too many Lancasters to the German nightfighters. In addition a surplus of Mosquitos would definately have provided the needed airsupport of the Arnhem operation that failed partly due to lack of air surport! They would probably have handled the SS-panzer divisions effectively!
There was plenty of air support at Arnhem. It could not be contacted because the radios that the paras had had the wrong crystals. Even though the pilots of the Typhoons on hand could look and see a German tank, they could not attack without an order from the ground, lest paras be nearby.
It sounds a little odd when you know these attack planes usually could go on rampaging the French countryside just looking for potential targets! Though there were parachuters around at Arnhem they were not equipped with tanks so it shouldn't have been to difficult to hamper the Germans if they really had done it right!
I know it sounds odd, but it was easy to hit a target effectively in a "free fire" zone. But after a lot, and I mean a lot, of "friendly fire" incidents involving air support, the procedures for using air support around friendly troops was put into place and strictly enforced. I have to wonder how many "Tiffie" pilots cheated at Arnhem, and attacked what they saw without guidance from the ground. Ryan didn't address that in his book, "A Bridge Too Far."
So, if I understand you right the paratroopers at Arnhem could have got their needed "artillery" support if their radios had been working correctly.
What a blunder!
Still I hold the view that the resources should have gone to the Mosquitos rather than the Lancasters. The German Luftwaffe showed in the openings of the battle of Britain that dedicated attacks on military targets can bring the enemy to its knees. They lost that battle when they stopped bombing the airfields.
Both fantastic planes but the Mozi was a fighter bomber and the Lancaster just a bomber and able to carry a bigger pay load, may be they should have sent mosquito's with the lancasters but hey hind sights great, name two more British WW2 planes and you know your stuff kid.
Hm, I saw the lessons learned by the german airfield attacks as sufficient to turn that lesson around and concentrate the attacs through the use of the Mosquito. The hindsight was there but Wallis didn't want to see it. He believed Germany could be brought to it's knees solely by the heavy bombers wich was a folly! So the issue of my criticism is the "kinglike" power of men like Wallis in the military system and the deliberate negligence of hands on knowledge! Not knowing about numerous planes!
Harris, not Wallis(!) but he merely represented a lot of "Kings" in the military establishment still. The Americans had their own King in the navy and Germany had Gøring! They were all men with large egos resulting in losses of lives and resources. The Mosq could have been used to a larger extent than it was but this was hampered by poor policies. Luckily de Haviland developed the plane in spite of political obstacles making it a statement of the free spirit of the west!
The P51 was eerily similar in design the Hawker Typhoon. They even built Merlin's at Packard's Detroit factory to power it. Incredibly fast but useless as a fighter due to it's severely restricted ceiling to name but one shortcoming, just like the Typhoon. Good ground attack aircraft though, just like the Typhoon. The DH98 was the most versatile and innovative aircraft in the world for it's time and even today remains one of, if not the most beautiful aircraft ever built.
which is why more mosquitoes have been shot down vs the A10. As far as it being the best flyingjoe, that's your opinion. In almost every history book it has been said that the P-51 won the war for the Allies.
P 51 is a great result of British technology improving on American (I am from USA), but Mosquito did far more important work, if there had been equal numbers there would be no contest, and I am a big fan of P51!
I've never seen a single history book that said the P-51 won the war for the allies. By the time the P-51 was available, the allies had already achieved air superiority. Its main value was as an escort for the long range heavy bombers. Most history books I have read seem to say the war was won by tactics, strategy, logistics, and the tremendous industrial and manpower advantage the allies had over the axis countries.
The allies would not have had nearly sufficient to have won the war without US production.REPLY if the british had used the american under powered engine would they have come into there own.u talk crap mate.u look at our small country to yours.u all came from the british colonies
The Rolls Royce engine fitted to the P51 was superior to the Allison above about 12,000ft because of the advanced design of the RR supercharger. That's what turned the P51 from a ground attack aircraft into the fighter which flew over Berlin.
The Mosquito was not one of the best aircraft of the second world war....It was THE best by far. The Government and defence procurement were incompetent then as now! If they had ordered more the war may have ended earlier and we might have had more flying examples left now.
It's hard to compare the Mossie to anything modern as there are no modern bombers as fast or faster then fighters! As impressive as the Mosquito's performance was it's versility...used as everything from bomber to fighter to Martime strike, photo recon, pathfinder...even an intereption-proof BOAC airliner flying to Sweden.
Only an American could compare a Mosquito with an A10 ! If you have to make comparisons with the A10, I suggest you take a look at a Heinkel He 162 "Salamader".
to spenner56, the RAF will not swear allegiance to the EU. 30 years in the RAf tells me that we will not. Anyway, whose air force got it's arse kicked!! Will have more respect for the modern Luftwaffe when they can put up an aerobatic display team
One of WW IIs greatest all round attack, recce, night fighter and bomber aircraft, the allies should have stopped production of all the other twin engined types and spewed these babies out for all they were worth. Fast and hard hitting the 1940s version of the Panavia Tornado and just about as stealth as they could get back then.
the world is filled with humans and humans fight, thats what we do best. War is part of us and always will be. The German's were a great and glorious empire and almost took over the world. Something other nations can only dream about. think about that for a while as you sit preaching how moral and superiour your countries are, the only reason you think this is because you are too stupid to see how evil all countries are.
Arrogant criminals with blotted hands of innocent blood for ages! If there were a just powerful authority you would be all brought to justice for your atrocities against humanity: against the red indians the inkas the aborigines the vietnamese the japanese the germans the arabs the indians the africans. You still feed on the blood of other wetched nations and fight your super historical battles against prisoners and refuges!Fool your selves but soon you'll pay the bill!
My Dad flew in Ansons on ASR patrols and said the Mosquito would break your heart. One day he followed a formation of Mossies on a raid to Norway in case any ditched. They hit their targets and were allready on the return trip before the Anson had even made it half way across the North Sea. Then one Mossie dropped out of formation, switched off one engine and blew right past the Anson, with the pilot & navigator waving goodbye.
This is awesome to see. There's a mosquito under restoration at Windsor Airport, Ontario. It's gonna take years but it will be worth it. I went to see the amateur restorers at work and was able to see everything up close, even pick it up...totally awesome and very rare
great aircraft, however, to me,...best aircraft in ww2 was p-47. Carried 1 ton payload, could endure massive punishment and was still an effective fighter.
well yeah, but the P-47 was about as aesthetically pleasing as your average hippopotamus. The mosquito looks absolutely brilliant, and it was a versatile and effective craft as well.
The Mosquito was not meant as a fighter, so putting it up against the P-47 is silly. night fighter it was much better in that role, but was far more versatile, the post war jet fighters were still barely the equal of the P-47 at least until the F-86. But you are talking different eras. and that's pointless.
Best aircraft of WWII. A twin engine bomber with a bigger payload than a B-17 (I've been up in a B-17). The Mosquito was faster than any fighter. Is there any question that the Mosquito was the best? Good old Canadian plywood! lol. Canada rules! Everyone likes to pat themselves on the back (I'm looking at you Britain and the US.) But without Canada and Poland and the other allies...
Hey! Who were the best pilots in the Battle of Britain - the Poles! Best of the best. God bless Poland. Terry
It's a track called "soul in isolation" by a band called The Chameleons ( from Manchester in the UK ). Superb band ... but I gotta agree perhaps not the best choice of music for this vid'.
Great film. At 2min 13sec you can see the bulged bomb bay allowing the 4000 lb cookies to be carried.
Code P3 makes this No 692 Squadron of 8 (Pathfinder) Group, Bomber Command, the first Mosquito squadron to drop these cookies. The airfield is probably Graveley, their wartime base near Huntingdon. No 692 was a founder squadron of the Light Night Striking Force, for pinprick and diversionary raids.
These Mossies could make Berlin and back twice a night, with 2 crews, hence "Berlin Express".
Its not just 'probably Gravely', but almost certainly Gravely, I believe 692 were there until June 45 when they moved to Gransden Lodge, where they disbanded within three months.
On 18 April 1945 20 Mosquitos, 617 Lancasters and 332 Halifaxes attacked Helgoland. 3 Halifaxes were lost. (See Middlebrook and Everitt, Bomber Command War Diaries, 1985, p697)

You still feed on the blood of other wetched nations and fight your super historical battles against prisoners and refuges!Fool your selves but soon you'll pay the bill!

Heres remembering my dear late father who flew with 255 Sqdn in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. Way to go Dad.....xx

I went to see the amateur restorers at work and was able to see everything up close, even pick it up...totally awesome and very rare
stormbringerII 3 years ago
great aircraft, however, to me,...best aircraft in ww2 was p-47. Carried 1 ton payload, could endure massive punishment and was still an effective fighter.
komepollass 3 years ago
well yeah, but the P-47 was about as aesthetically pleasing as your average hippopotamus. The mosquito looks absolutely brilliant, and it was a versatile and effective craft as well.
g3offrito 3 years ago
The Mosquito was not meant as a fighter, so putting it up against the P-47 is silly. night fighter it was much better in that role, but was far more versatile, the post war jet fighters were still barely the equal of the P-47 at least until the F-86. But you are talking different eras. and that's pointless.
falconlem 3 years ago
Best aircraft of WWII. A twin engine bomber with a bigger payload than a B-17 (I've been up in a B-17). The Mosquito was faster than any fighter. Is there any question that the Mosquito was the best? Good old Canadian plywood! lol. Canada rules! Everyone likes to pat themselves on the back (I'm looking at you Britain and the US.) But without Canada and Poland and the other allies...
Hey! Who were the best pilots in the Battle of Britain - the Poles! Best of the best. God bless Poland. Terry

tantalumdom 3 years ago

These Mossies could make Berlin and back twice a night, with 2 crews, hence "Berlin Express".
woolfox45 3 years ago
Its not just 'probably Gravely', but almost certainly Gravely, I believe 692 were there until June 45 when they moved to Gransden Lodge, where they disbanded within three months.
Great vid. 5*

Might anyone know if Mosquitos were ever involved in RAF attacks against Helgoland, Germany?
thomasbhunter007 3 years ago
On 18 April 1945 20 Mosquitos, 617 Lancasters and 332 Halifaxes attacked Helgoland. 3 Halifaxes were lost. (See Middlebrook and Everitt, Bomber Command War Diaries, 1985, p697)
