Possibly Speirs committed a murder during Normandy;
"Speirs ordered his platoon to hold position. One of his squad leaders ignored the orders due to fatigue and disorientation. After his order was ignored a second time, Speirs shot the sergeant between the eyes. , then promptly reported the incident to the company commander, Captain Jerre S. Gross. Gross was killed in combat the next day and the incident was not pursued."
@fishordie2 True but he allegedly murdered POW's as well. I havent had time to research the matter further yet but if the allegations are true then it exposes yet another of multitudes of atrocities committed during the war. Very tragic and an indictment on the conduct of the war.
@ZEDSTODT i agree. he did so much for America during the war but was not very much for morals. i read something about how he seemed to get a thrill from killing or something. but i loved how he was portrayed in Band of Brothers. they did delve into his loose morals a little when he killed those German prisoners.
@DoubleAgent244 They needed I company to help secure the town and defeat the Germans. Without his bravery, the Germans would either have escaped or killed all of the Americans.
@DoubleAgent244 He had to relay orders to move straight ahead and not flank the Germans or else they would've been massacared. The reason he ran through the Germans is because the other unit did not have a radio and the only way to get them the orders was to personally deliver it.

@AutumnKrystal Even if they did, what do you expect, it's their country. Americans are blindly loyal to their country aswell, even if we don't do as much messed up shit as the Germans. And if we did, I doubt that'd change anything- most of the people I know's attitude about the middle east is "bomb those sand niggers".
According to Richard Winters' book, Spiers made sure he earned his reputation as a murderer and often killed for shock value in front of his men. Although he later denied killing the group of German prisoners, there are other reports of him having committed atrocities. Winters also wrote that in today's US army, Spiers would most certainly be court martialed for the allegations made against him however at the time he was far too good a combat leader to lose.
I remember watching this for the first time and muttering, "fucking nuts." out loud - in awed disbelief. This was a fun moment from one of the best series ever 8)))
he wasnt much of a eroo as you guys think he was also the one that shot all the german prisoners in Days of Days not only that but there was an American prisoner with that group of germans
@WPJonny It was never actually established that he did it. It was a rumor that circulated among the troops, and to this day no one has ever actually substantiated it. The only comment I ever heard from anyone in Easy Company say about it was many years later, when Winters was asked about it, and he said he believed Spiers was capable of it, but he'd never seen any proof. I'm not saying it didn't happen, but there's no proof that it did.
@WPJonny Well like people have said, it could have been hearsay. If he did, you have to realise that the airborne were behind enemy lines and keeping prisoners would have compromised them. Part of the story said that he gave them cigs before he shot them, this was probably to distract them so they wouldn't have been scared in their last moments, so it probably wasn't a revenge killing. It was brutal but perhaps necessary. And the American became an enemy when he put the German uniform on.
Dude your rationalizing. Spiers from what we saw was an absolute hero. IF he did kill the prisoners,it was not up to him to make that decision. Soldiers take prisoners all the time. Guess what?. It's almost always dangerous. Do you really think the allied commanders were just a bunch of rubes falling allover the place trying to figure out the next dumb thing to do?
@WPJonny If you are serving in an enemy's Army, you are no longer an American. Serving in a foreign army is a great way to get your citizenship rendered "null and void."
@SCE2AUX I would guess that had he not formally renounced his US citizenship prior that he would be found guilty of treason. Under the circumstances my guess is that would result in execution. I don't think they'd consider his citizenship voided as much as betrayed. In a sense it would be treated more harshly than if he were a German citizen.

@HoekieBets no country in the history of mankind has ever conquered Afghanistan; I hate to say it, but I doubt our forces will ever establish a victory there
@ChickenMOOO We have conquered Afghanistan actually. There will always be resistance. Do you think when the Romans conquered contries that they didn't have resistance? They did...but they still conquered their nations.
@DeCavalcante when and by whom was Afghanistan conquered? And I know, my country didn't build the largest empire in the history of humankind by being nice to people..
@ChickenMOOO Tell that to a Marine in Afghanistan, he'll smack you just like a Roman would have in Israel. We've established a government there. We have and no where did I say the fighting was over but facts are we own that country. Yes fighting will continue, and it may never end. The country won't be stable completely. IF you don't understand that then you need to find another topic to talk about. Try McDonalds.
@DeCavalcante Tell that to a logical person, or anyone who's served over there, they'll tell you that Afghanistan is far from conquered. The government there are puppets, it's ruled by the Taliban, as it has been since the war with the Soviets. That country will never be stable as long as any UN forces are there, it's just as stable as it would be, were Afghanistan to invade and force their culture upon you. Never mind though, war is the only way of teaching you Americans geography.
@DeCavalcante I dont think that US has killed milions of civilians to estabalish control like the Romans... Romans did estabalished control after making the Jews star an Exodus!
@DeCavalcante Interesting choice of words. Do you mean "CONQUER" or "LIBERATE". I always thought you went to Afghanistan and Iraq to "LIBERATE" the oppressed peoples of those countries. Only invaders "CONQUER".
@nightwing1409 I didn't chose to do either, I only support our troops. You seem to be confused on the issue however. We went into Afghanistan to kick out the people who "attacked" us, that is the real reason for the UN going in. Whether thats true or not that is not the debate.
As for Iraq....well lord knows why Bush wanted to go in there...we are invaders in Iraq.
Thanks DeCavalcante. Comments accepted. I think sometimes people become confused about why they are in the theatre and what their mission is. To conquer or to liberate ? It makes the world of difference as to how you perceive the country and its people.
Spiers is literally the perfect soldier, still would be imo. He, of course, was imperfect, but he had a carefully crafted persona for the men under him that made them aspire to heroism.
Spiers knew that the paras could not hold prisoners; they were behind enemy lines...
Spiers did not execute the German prisoners captured by American paras after offering them a cigarette, as the other soldiers thought.
Spiers himself tells Lipton, "Maybe Tersius knew there was some value to the men thinking he was the meanest, toughest SOB in the whole Roman legion."
From what I have gathered, he offered them a cig and took them all about half a kilometer from the camp into a clearing, where he had them kneel, and he discharged a magazine. Then he told them to walk that way.
Dude was prolly a good soldier, but still a criminal who never got his penalty.. if the series are 100% true story (which its not), Spiers killed 10-20 unarmed prisoners lol.
Dude was a good soldier, but definatly a maniac.. maybe thats why ;)
There is too much information to post on this site but I recommend that you look up his bio on Wikipedia. Speirs must have been the consummate Soldier. He had a distinguished military career after WWII attended a Russian language course in 1956 and was assigned as a liaison officer to the Red Army in Potsdam, East Germany. In 1958 he became the American Governor of the Spandau Prison in Berlin. He went on to serve in Korea and in 1962, was a member of the U.S. Mission to the Royal Lao Army.
Even Jeffrey Settle who played the part of Capt. Ronald Speirs in the mini series is well cast as he moves with a grace and confidence under fire that makes him look almost indestructible. Lieutenant Colonel Ronald C. Speirs (April 20, 1920 - April 11, 2007), Recommend you all read his profile on Wikipedia. What a man. And yes, Speirs was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1920 before emigrating with his family to Boston, Massachusetts, USA, arriving on December 26, 1924.
"Do you know why you hid in that ditch Blithe ?...........You hid in that ditch because you think there is still hope.........but Blithe, the only hope you have is to accept the fact you're already dead, and the sooner you accept that the sooner you'll be able to function as a Soldiers supposed to function, without mercy without compassion without remorse; all war depends upon it."
Ronald Speirs is a World Ward II hero, no matter how you see it. He clearly understood who was the good guy and who was the bad guy. No grey area. It's men like him that had enough guts to defeat the Nazi's. Otherwise, we would probably live in German occupied USA even today. Galslacht, it's yours and Obama's type of thinking that will get us defeated by muslim extremists. Wake up. When we kill these people (the enemy), I think you stupid ass liberals don't realize their own atrocities.
You'd be hard pressed to find people who have sympathy for war crimes committed against war criminals. In any case, we dont even know for sure if he even shot those men.
Speirs was a really private person after the military. He rarely participated in the reunion and I am not sure he also attended some of his friends' funeral.
One of my favorite characters and I read here that he lived a long life in spite of his hardcore style and his presence in the war from Korea. But a question remains why didn t he appear as a real person on the series like the others talking about what happened?I m not from USA but this miniseries absolutely...amazing
This man is easily one of the greatest officers the military has ever produced. This action, alone, cements him as such.
Running through enemy lines to hook up with I company and relieve his men is what a great officer is made of. But coming back for his men? That's what only the BEST officers are made of.
You do realize that's a myth, right? There was also a myth that he randomly shot an American Sergeant in the face b/c he disobeyed an order.
Try serving in the military awhile and you'll find that these bullshit stories about guys you work with pop up all the time, doesn't mean there's any truth to it.
i think he confirmed the stories by writing a letter to HBO or something to allow them to portray the way he is portrayed in the series since HBO is afraid they might get sued for Speirs portrayal.
I love how you make it sound like killing german POWs is some how a negative especially when they were SS. and besides the miniseries makes it clear that the men are unable to untangle fact from rumor. So it is very unclear if he actually killed those nazis
There are always a few around in both war and peace; Officers promoted to positions of authority who, when it comes down to the moment, just don't have what it takes. Fortunately in this day and age of thoroughly professional armies strict selection criteria and training ensure they are weeded out long before they see action. Remember that this is WWII and armies were made up of volunteers and conscripts. It may only be a made for TV movie but Spiers run is truly heroic.
He was not in shock. Instead he was not a leader and couldn't handle the stress of having mens lives in his hands. His demeanor in the field of combat lacked, and therfore Lt Spiers was sent in. Because he couldnt deal with all of the responsibility, he cracked and lost his cool. He stopped talking because he was afraid to get men killed, and instead of taking a chance and following orders, he hesitated thus ironically resulting in the loss of mens lives. Spiers was everything this man was not.

@DeCavalcante when and by whom was Afghanistan conquered? And I know, my country didn't build the largest empire in the history of humankind by being nice to people..
ChickenMOOO 1 year ago
@ChickenMOOO The United States has conqured Afghanistan. The same as the Romans Controlled Israel, yet they still met resistance.
DeCavalcante 1 year ago
@DeCavalcante The US has conquered Afghanistan? Is that some sort of a sick joke?
ChickenMOOO 1 year ago
@ChickenMOOO Tell that to a Marine in Afghanistan, he'll smack you just like a Roman would have in Israel. We've established a government there. We have and no where did I say the fighting was over but facts are we own that country. Yes fighting will continue, and it may never end. The country won't be stable completely. IF you don't understand that then you need to find another topic to talk about. Try McDonalds.
DeCavalcante 1 year ago
@DeCavalcante Tell that to a logical person, or anyone who's served over there, they'll tell you that Afghanistan is far from conquered. The government there are puppets, it's ruled by the Taliban, as it has been since the war with the Soviets. That country will never be stable as long as any UN forces are there, it's just as stable as it would be, were Afghanistan to invade and force their culture upon you. Never mind though, war is the only way of teaching you Americans geography.
ChickenMOOO 1 year ago
@DeCavalcante I dont think that US has killed milions of civilians to estabalish control like the Romans... Romans did estabalished control after making the Jews star an Exodus!
ImperialGuard9001 1 year ago
@DeCavalcante so you are conquerors and not liberatiors, good job you just made the whole world a less safer place
kg02170 1 year ago
@DeCavalcante Interesting choice of words. Do you mean "CONQUER" or "LIBERATE". I always thought you went to Afghanistan and Iraq to "LIBERATE" the oppressed peoples of those countries. Only invaders "CONQUER".
nightwing1409 1 year ago
@nightwing1409 I didn't chose to do either, I only support our troops. You seem to be confused on the issue however. We went into Afghanistan to kick out the people who "attacked" us, that is the real reason for the UN going in. Whether thats true or not that is not the debate.
As for Iraq....well lord knows why Bush wanted to go in there...we are invaders in Iraq.
DeCavalcante 1 year ago
Thanks DeCavalcante. Comments accepted. I think sometimes people become confused about why they are in the theatre and what their mission is. To conquer or to liberate ? It makes the world of difference as to how you perceive the country and its people.

Spiers is literally the perfect soldier, still would be imo. He, of course, was imperfect, but he had a carefully crafted persona for the men under him that made them aspire to heroism.
Spiers knew that the paras could not hold prisoners; they were behind enemy lines...
roninmediaoutlet 1 year ago
Spiers did not execute the German prisoners captured by American paras after offering them a cigarette, as the other soldiers thought.
Spiers himself tells Lipton, "Maybe Tersius knew there was some value to the men thinking he was the meanest, toughest SOB in the whole Roman legion."
From what I have gathered, he offered them a cig and took them all about half a kilometer from the camp into a clearing, where he had them kneel, and he discharged a magazine. Then he told them to walk that way.

This is the definition of BAD ASS.
Nobody1448 1 year ago 4

Wake up. When we kill these people (the enemy), I think you stupid ass liberals don't realize their own atrocities.
ryanalan29 2 years ago 2
You'd be hard pressed to find people who have sympathy for war crimes committed against war criminals. In any case, we dont even know for sure if he even shot those men.
zsheik22 2 years ago
Speirs was a really private person after the military. He rarely participated in the reunion and I am not sure he also attended some of his friends' funeral.
rockyrilo 2 years ago 3
o_o I would have been exactly like Lipton in that scenario. "Holy shit, did he just run out there?"
Morlaf 2 years ago
One of my favorite characters and I read here that he lived a long life in spite of his hardcore style and his presence in the war from Korea. But a question remains why didn t he appear as a real person on the series like the others talking about what happened?I m not from USA but this miniseries absolutely...amazing
haristeas22 2 years ago
Ronald Speirs: Cigarette, anyone?
This man is easily one of the greatest officers the military has ever produced. This action, alone, cements him as such.
Running through enemy lines to hook up with I company and relieve his men is what a great officer is made of. But coming back for his men? That's what only the BEST officers are made of.
17thknight 2 years ago 5
@17thknight dude, he may be good, but he killed a load of german prisoners
slippp40 2 years ago
You do realize that's a myth, right? There was also a myth that he randomly shot an American Sergeant in the face b/c he disobeyed an order.
Try serving in the military awhile and you'll find that these bullshit stories about guys you work with pop up all the time, doesn't mean there's any truth to it.
You may as well believe in the tooth fairy.

@17thknight You claim its a myth, others say soldiers witnessed it, you may aswell believe in santa clause
slippp40 2 years ago
i think he confirmed the stories by writing a letter to HBO or something to allow them to portray the way he is portrayed in the series since HBO is afraid they might get sued for Speirs portrayal.
astupiddvdcase 2 years ago
I love how you make it sound like killing german POWs is some how a negative especially when they were SS. and besides the miniseries makes it clear that the men are unable to untangle fact from rumor. So it is very unclear if he actually killed those nazis
dhg4983 2 years ago
There are always a few around in both war and peace; Officers promoted to positions of authority who, when it comes down to the moment, just don't have what it takes. Fortunately in this day and age of thoroughly professional armies strict selection criteria and training ensure they are weeded out long before they see action. Remember that this is WWII and armies were made up of volunteers and conscripts. It may only be a made for TV movie but Spiers run is truly heroic.
nightwing1409 2 years ago 4
Excuse me for my question. Was the person who Speirs took over for in a state of shock?
destroyedtheozone 2 years ago
He was not in shock. Instead he was not a leader and couldn't handle the stress of having mens lives in his hands. His demeanor in the field of combat lacked, and therfore Lt Spiers was sent in. Because he couldnt deal with all of the responsibility, he cracked and lost his cool. He stopped talking because he was afraid to get men killed, and instead of taking a chance and following orders, he hesitated thus ironically resulting in the loss of mens lives. Spiers was everything this man was not.
