I just passed my Architect Licensure Exam, your video is not really very encouraging.. tsk. tsk.. hehe.. oh well this profession: you've got to love it or hate it. Im just gonna choose to love it then. :)
P.S. Architecture is a profession with the longest education for the least money. Most construction people think Architects are bufoons: mainly because their drawings do not reflect the reality or code requirements of a real building..
The age of the Architect died years ago, probably with Wright, just as the age of classical music passed 20 years ago. An Engineer can complete a degree in 4 years and make much more money and have many more options.
There are more important things in life then money, happiness for instance. Doug Patt (howtoarchitect) provides so much reasons to aspire becoming an architect, I simply am astounded that you should bring up the financial aspect! Learn by doing and do what you love.
Could you please explain to me why anyone should draw on the left side of a triangle? It seems inpractical and I dont think you would get a different result...
just have some interest in architecture, so i´m not able to comment on that subject.
but i´m curious about your comment on the end of classical music.
My guess is that you are more knowledgable than the avarage person who thinks that classical music ended with mozart and beethoven and the new "classical" composers are hendrix and the beatles.?? Of course the classical tradition is 100 of years old and was very active & innovating the 20th century.
Your technique of drawing is incorrect. You should draw your lines on the left side of the triangles, not the right. This method has been taught for 100 years.
Architecture used to be a good profession, before the introduction of CAD drafting programs ... nowadays new graduates spend many years drafting in front of the computer doing changes after changes and are being treated like CAD technicians in most cases. Even when registered, unless you're a smooth talker, you will still be stuck in the office.
Thanks to my subscribers for their patience. I added the German translations to the video at the request & direction of Sebastian Lauff at Archimag in Germany so the video could be posted for his Deutsch speaking audience. Because of my lack of proficiency at a second language we've had to re-post with some corrections. We also look forward to a school in Mexico translating all 7 of the 'So you want to be an architect' videos to Spanish. Coming soon! Thanks again, Doug
Sad but true. I hope the best for my friends in architecture.

Great video...unfortunately the "business" aspect will tend to ruin the "love" of many professions!!

But what are you referring to 20 years ago?
