Just a question to the film buffs out there. Has the Crystal Palace ever appeared in any period films set during it's time period? The building was phenomenal and yet it rarely is mentioned in history books, and I can't recall it ever being depicted in movies.
@1brittanylynn A large part of the palace was stil standing in 1956, when that too burnt down. The grounds of the park and the now (sadly) demolished high level station appear in this Ken Russel film from 1957. Pathe news also have footage, mostly of the fire and demolition.
Last time this country built an exhibition centre it came up with the Millenium Dome !!!! Need I say more ! No comparison in a million years with the crystal place . We appear to be going backward with design.
@WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 yeah but you know how things are nowaday's. it would end up being 2 billion over budget and 5 years overschedule. we would proberbly have to sell it to china to try and get back all the tax payers money that was wasted on it. unfortunately the day's of great british engineering are well and truly over.
Me GGGG Uncle was Sir Joseph Paxton. He designed The Crystal Palace. Queen Victoria Knighted him in 1851 for designing it. Such a shame it burnt to the ground in 1936.
"The Crystal Palace itself, not its contents, was the art here."
An excellent point. The Palace was a creation of such majesty and beauty, that more than 70 years after its tragic ending, it is still fondly remembered and respected by many. The Victorians were the Romans of their day, and buildings like the Crystal Palace were testimony to their engineering genius.

Hi, it wasnt Q. Vic's idea. It was the Royal Society of Arts idea, they encouraged Prince Albert to be it President. They saw the benefit in the previous French exhibitions and then saw the mercantile and showing off benefit and then set the worlds precedent. UK WAS the workshop of the world. :-) a historian
it was henry cole's idea based on the great exhibition in france a year before.

The crystal Palace came down on 1936 by fire and in books some people call it the glass house. Loved the video!

I believe rebilding the Crystal Palace may re-energise the British to re-appreciate our great nation. Or at least a film should be made about it.
Good soundtrack but Bolero by Ravel would also be great.

I loved this video, excepting for the white font, which was almost impossible to read.
