SICK jeep man. we are in the process of rebuilding our 1980 CJ5. just wondering how you did the wiring harnes? i saw you got the motor out of a wagoneer right? did you just swap everything over and mate it with the existing cj wires? thanks
Thanks! It's currently down which is why it hasn't been on any videos for a while...I blew the front axle apart finally. Anyway...
It had a worked up 258 in it originally so all that was needed was the correct flywheel and motor mounts. As far as wiring, because both engines are carb'd and they share ignition systems (less the dizzy itself) all I did was swap sending units for the gauges to read properly and put in an HEI dizzy for a 1-wire ignition system. Very simple swap.
@evulution1337 the 318 is AMC lol but thats sweet i was looking at that for my jeep but decided on the 318 since its got about 300hp and the 360 has i believe 175?
Well, the 318 is actually Chrysler which purchased AMC in the late 80s. The Gen 3 AMC V8s were the 304, 360 and 401. The Chrylser V8s were 318 and 360. I think you have your manufacturers and net/gross hp ratings confused. I know I tend to get the net/gross hp ratings mixed up a lot.
oh okay, well im going to be buying a jeep within the next 4 years and restoring it. What engine should i put in it that is v8 atleast 5.0 and 300hp or more? thanks!
It really depends on your budget and availability in your area (if getting used). 'The' engine to put in right now is still an LS series chevy. You can't really beat the power, efficiency, and aftermarket support.
FWIW - Although the horsepower increase is just plain FUN (especially on the street) a medium power engine and low\proper gearing will allow you to go pretty much anywhere when coupled with a stable vehicle.
The last AMC V8 was produced in 91/92 and was the AMC 360. It was also the last V8 manufactured with a carburetor on top. Everyone had switched over to Fuel Injection by then.
there is one on-line of an exhaust clip. i think it's under account 'djlythic' iirc... that is the only one i know of...i never got to see it in action :( but it was a sick truck.
Thanks. It's an AMC360 from an 85 Grand Wagoneer w/ Edelbrock 4bbl, 600CFM Performer, HEI Ignition, No EGR, No AIR. The exhaust is fully removable\servicable.

It all depends on application, use and personal preference. You can get a SUA to flex well - I chose to run SUA so I don't have to deal with the complications SOA creates. If I was to redo my suspension I would still stay SUA and run a longer spring...I plan on swapping out the front springs with 2"-3" lift Wagoneer leafs, run a shackle just long enough to have full usage of the spring and switch to SRS.
But again - it's all personal preference and for me was BUDGET.
Thanks man...the JKs would be fine if they had a 5.7 in them...not a minivan engine. The CJ is a lot better now, too...I should have vids/pics soon, though.
2.5" exhaust, what muffler? Sounds awesome think I'll put the 2 chamber flowmaster on my cj7 to give it a try, has a 304 with stock manifolds and such. Would have to sound better then turbos i got now lol.
Running a Thrush 2-Chamber Welded...a bit more mild than the flowmaster...the tone is much better. Truck is also changed AGAIN since this video was taken...exhaust note is better too, imho.
how did you get 300hp out of the motor?

@cr125rguy
Ran out of room...
1 Wire to Distributor (HEI conversion & Relayed)
1 Wire to Choke (Tapped into the Dizzy Power)
1 Wire to Alternator
2 Wires to Sensors (Coolant and Oil Pressure)
The HEI allowed me to remove about 40ft of spaghetti from the engine bay.
PM me for more info. I'll be happy to fill you in on all the caveats and specifics of my swap.
Thanks again for the comment and view. :)
