I guess a young chunky, harmless coonish little boy ala Webster/Gary Coleman would be easier to digest and less threatening than a Black man on his path seriously pursuing and crafting a great and ever-changing art form ! BTW what's with the lady and the weave...Do your research...the ladies in the brothels @ Storyville didn't look like this....see; actual photos @ Google Images !
Kermit Ruffin would have been a better choice for trumpeter since he better embodies the spirit and play of "Louis". (And doesn't play so flat and watered down to please you know who !) This looks like a coon show that reeks of patronage to the "larger audience". It seems very disrespectful and cartoonish, especially in light of this man's legacy. It's cheap and Wynton Marsalis should no better !
The music has nothing to do with the way Louis played in 1923 when he recorded his first sides with King Oliver. Even less with the style played in 1907. Sounds much more like the dixieland revival in the late 40s, a music I have always despised...
@Atticus70 I think that's not the point, the point is creating an atmosphere everybody is familiar with. For say, Ellington didn't copy middle eastern music but created an impression in the Far East Suite. Also, composers like Korsakov and Tchaikovsky didn't copy folk music rather created their impressions. I think this doesn't even sound like the dixieland revival, rather as a sort of impression.
This is gonna be sooooo good!! That kid is adorable and Jackie Early is such a good actor it must be fun to do silent films because you're acting doing more physical acting and less dialogue!!! That's good the music is more important anyways so as long as the Buddy Bolden film is a feature length and not short so I'm happy. Plus this is Louis childhood so it's fiction just going with the music.
Hi Wynton, I am a friend of Cecile Licad. I would like to ask permission if I can post this video clip on her fanpage that I created. Thanks/Franco :)
