  • i never liked comparing versions of songs, in the sense of one being better than another, each one is what its supposed to be by the respective artists imho, i do love this version, it is the original version and is a beautiful composition i think, i do think though, theres a bit more urgency in this version, which adds to the song, luthers version though, has more passion, need and wanting in it, just my 2pence worth :)

  • Brenda applied flawless vocals to soundtrack a cozy winter's saturday night over a candle lit dinner. Can I get uh witness?!

  • An under-appreciated singer-songwriter.

Did she retire on her songwriting earnings from this song after Luther did it?

  • Reminds me of my teenage years with this music, when you're full of high hopes in life and in love. Thanks

  • Dude, I am through after seeing FFX with this old R&B song randomly. haha

  • my mom like this song but i like this game :`

  • amazing!! love this song and the animation!!!GREAT JOB!!!!

  • It's amazing to know that she did this before Luther. When he gets ahold of a song, it's all over! But she had some traction with it.

  • Yes I love this song and the animation is wonderful... Thank you for this presentation...

  • The melody of this song reminds of a refreshing fragrance, or ocean breeze . . . very misty and romantic!

  • It's a hard press between Brenda and Luther, here. I think I like the refreshing melody of Brenda's, a little better, with all the beautiful orchestration.

  • I actually looked at this video aand was quite impressed

  • this is brenda's all the rest of you all shut up!

  • Brenda wrote this song.

  • Brenda's songs made you FEEL a certain way back then...She and Angie Bofill and Phyllis Hyman just had that 'thing' that moved you.

I fell in love at 12 to this song...risked getting beat up by two brothers to be with their sister. Would stand out in the cold screenporch kissing her for hours...greatest Jr. High love affair ever...thank you Val

  • So Talented!! Love this song!!!!

  • didn't know this wasnt an original luther vandross song

  • Most people prefer Luther's version, but Brenda's is my favorite..AND SHE WROTE IT! It was also the first song I made love to.

  • What Lyrics!!!!!!!!

  • If you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet....!!!

  • Great wedding song!

  • Pretty song.

  • i love both of them but luthers is so much smooth makes you wanna fall in love all over again even thou she sang it first and i love it but i got to give it to luther

  • Brenda Russell originally recorded this song. It has been covered by mostly male artists. Luther Vandross was the first to cover this song, and his version is the standard. Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson covered this song as a duet. Ruben Studdard also covered this song as the last track of his third album. My second favorite American Idol finalist Chikezie from season 7 got eliminated covering this song, but that version is my favorite version of this song.

  • LOL good work using Final Fantasy X fofr the vid. Would work better if it wasn't so laggy but still a great idea!!

  • i love you nga

  • Brenda Russell wrote and recorded this song in 1978. If you like this song then you will love the entire Album. every song is a banger trust me, Its just great top to bottom.

  • @cvonmurray holy crap! so...Luther Vandross only covered it?

    Wow...

  • Hello. I like the music, but is the name of the cartoon? Thank you

  • Janet Jackson sampeld this in the song Do It To Me on the 20y.o cd

  • Make no mistake, Brenda Russell wrote this beautiful song (and recorded it first, I believe)...I'm sure Luther Vandross thanked her accordingly.

  • think bow wow sample this for let me hold you

  • yep. he did. :)

  • @eiereie No Bow Wow sampled the Luther Vandross version of this song...

  • @DJsorama

Hahaha. you should know that. 98% of your modern artists get their ideas from the classics (ie the REAL music). This music caused the world to spin...today, the world is at a bitter halt.

  • @CazK88 I totally agree!!!!!!

  • @DJsorama in fact, he sampled the Luther Vandross version

  • @DJsorama Jermaine Dupri Sample the Vandross version for Bow wow and this version for Janet Jackson.

  • She has a awesome voice. Love her songs.

eiereie you did a a awesome job editing this video to =)

  • escellent audio & video

  • what an awesome talent with huge ability. She is gifted and underscored!

  • So true

  • Shhhhhhht.. it's our secret then! ;-)

  • love it

  • Breanda Russell is a very unique talented lady...she does it all...love her music. Thanks for this great piece of music not only touches the soul but the heart. Music like this has the ability to express sometimes where words fail...especially when you love someone and they are not there anymore. ...the unspoken words remain.

  • What are you waiting on? Melanie

  • This was one of the best songs ever. Brenda Russell is so talented. She sang the hell out of this song. And yes way before Luther Vandross took it and made a huge hit out of it. Brenda Russell, wrote so many wonderful songs, so right, if only for one night, get here, piano in the dark. My favorite song from her is this one and Le Restaraunt on the Piano in the Dark Album. Thanks for the post and the memories.

  • What happened to Brenda?

This kind of music is lost man...damn do I miss it!

  • I only knew of Luther's version...until now. This is a pretty version. Luther's moves me more though.

  • This is a classic Brenda Russell composition. Her version sounds like a demo. I still love her.

  • I jus tlove this song. Luther Vandross did it justice too.

    Real love songs...ahhhh

  • So is this classic a Brenda Russell composition?

  • Had the album back in 1979. Back in 1979 this was my favorite female song. It's now 2008 and i'm very happy to report this is still my all time favorite female song. that's how your suppose to write a song.

  • Janet Jackson sampled this song for her '20 Y.O' album.the song is called 'Do it 2 me' and is one of the best song of hers ever. :)

  • Bump! I love what Janet did with this sample ... it was very sly and clever.

  • i love this song. brenda sang it before luther both versions are excellent.

  • i agree lol but i didnt know she sang this song since i dont think i was born yet when the song was made ;P

  • I knew that she wrote it but I didnt know she sang it.

  • This is one of the best videos ever... you definitely captured the essence of the song using Yuna and Tidus... i love it!

  • o thanx!! i worked really hard on this 1, so im glad i captured the essence of the song cause i struggle doing that!

  • @eiereie ... I love what you did with the song and the video! Brenda Russell is one of my fav artist and a personal friend of mine as well! Only For One Night, I think, is her best song! Piano In The Dark is my second fav of Brenda's and of course, her biggest success.

Thank you for making such a wonderful video for all of us to enjoy!

    ... Rick Sibbett
