Its great to be able to feed the wild buddy... but dont feed them BREAD try seeds ...and try to remove the sunflowers seed in summer... they dont need it.... try that...you are doing birds more harm feeding the, bread ok...
(cont) i'd like to put the food out and go away and leave them, and spend time with them on other days when i'm not as busy. i'm gonna leave out less food now, and move them to the backyard. that way less cockies come and less vulnerable house points on the backyard. however, i must say, i love having them around.
Hi. great clip. and they are tame. i recently started getting cockies at my house, and it's wonderful. i leave some food out and they come. but it's turning into an anxiety experience. i'm worried they will pick the corner of our roof where the tiles are cracked and wood is exposed. any tips so this doesn't happen? it actually happened yesterday. - he pulled off a small tile chunk, though it was quite old and cracked. still, it's not as relaxing if one has to worry about this. sometimes
If you are feeding your cockatoo all this junk food then you are slowly killing it!! It will end up with kidney dysfunction from all the salt in these foods and liver disease from all the fats. Cooked chicken is fine but no skin if it's fried.
Actually, bread is ok for parrots, especially toasted wheat bread. I know this because both my mom and grandma have or has had a cockatoo or amazon. What he has to worry about is how he was giving the bread but taking it away. Have to be careful with the fact they are wild and need that respect and can bite you if they feel threatened or teased. Putting out bowls of fruit or cockatoo bird feed is alright. Some bird seed is actually harmful to certain parrots.
Bread is one of the worst things you can feed wild birds, especially white bread. Please don't feed it to them. If you really must feed them at least buy some sunflower seeds or some nuts. I'm sure your neighbours won't appreciate it when these birds start making messes all over their roofs and balconies.
Yes, they eat whatever they can find, but there is no bread or processed foods in the wild. They eat what nature provides for them to be healthy. Bread is NOT okay for wild birds. It fills them up and they don't seek out their natural diet which is what they need to be healthy and survive. Bread has absolutely no nutritional value and contains sugar and salt and is made from processed flour, none of which are good for birds, wild or domestic.
Not recommended. They are cute and cuddly but these birds can live to be over 100, and they become very posessive of their human 'partner'
Cockatoos need to be kept entertained at all times or they may become bored and mutilate themselves, or they may become resentful of anything or anyone who takes the time of their 'partner', so the become aggressive and un-approachible. You'd be better off with a small parrot, or a dog or a cat.
they cannot live to be over 100 years... their average life span is 30-50 SOMETIMES up to 70... over 100 years would be a world record... and small birds need just as much attention.. they just cant be as destructive when they are left alone... remember all parrots (except the kakapo) are flocking animals so they ALL need plenty of attention...
I'm not sure there's a "functional" difference between 70 and 100 when it comes to discussing a companion animal. Nevertheless, several online sites cite lifespans of "more than 100 years". Now, of course they could be wrong, but is particular hair worth splitting when the OP's post was intended to warn off casual impulse buying?
@damlyn9 i said clearly in my comment that they can go up to 70, i also said OVER 100 years... not just 100 years.... they can go up to 100 but its more common to get near 70ish...
@damlyn9 why do you have cockatoo's as pets anyways if you live in australia? thats cruel... especially if you ever have wild cockatoos in your back yard... that just shows them the life they could of had if they weren't put into captivity by heartless humans. people should have never infected australia... killing mynahs and such... makes sense that your all descendants of criminals.
bananatree94, I have 9 birds, 7 of which are rescues. They came to me from bad situations and were all born in captivity . I am trying to make these birds lives better by providing a good home, good food and safety. They would never survive in the wild now. The only myna birds killed here are feral Indian mynahs and are not native to Oz.. They are a very real threat to our own native birds.
Just also wanted to say that you should check out my videos of my birds. They are happy and healthy and get lots of attention. The smaller birds inside the house are seldom in their cages, mostly to sleep. They have their own play area. One of my cockatiels is 13 and the sun conure, Noddy, is 17. He is lucky to be alive.
@bananatree94 It is very sad. when i was a kid, the neighbours had one cockatoo in a cage the size of a small tv. they left it alone all day. it was next to our fence so i'd always see it's eye looking through a hole there when i went out. i could tell it was incredibly smart so it must have gone insane there. not enough room to stretch it's wings and no company or intellectual stimulation all day. those people should've been jailed for torture.

seriously? i would LOVE to wake up every morning and see those kind of birds everywhere right outside my door. They're my favorite birds in the whole world. that guy is SO lucky!
Stunningly beautiful. We don't have those birds in Denmark, but there was a large flock of seagulls in the area yesterday. Those with a black head and white body. Beautiful as well.
they r so cute! theyd do anything for food! we have cockatoos on our balcony and we handfeed them seeds, i have pet them and held one! i also owned one when i was young..his name was charlie, he use to say 'hello charlie', kiss and bark. i miss him!
Simple. Keep your hand near it as much as possible. The real secret is to NEVER flinch. No matter how much you want to pull away. This only signals danger. I've spent hours with my hand in a bird's cage til they trust me. the rest is easy.
haha wow! what beautiful birds! i have a new pet cockatiel and its my first time to have one. it is still afraid of me and it tries to bite me, can you give me any advice? thanks!
show it that you dont want to hurt it, use your finger to pat its head, mine loves this, speak to it softly, do not force it to do anything, eventually you will earn its trust and it will love you. i have 2 cockatiels so ive learnt a bit.
Yes. They are native to Australia. And yes they are kept as pets all around the world and prized by their owners. They are good talkers but very noisy squawkers! I've had 2 as pets in New Zealand.
omg, the just come right up to you! how trusting!! WOW thats cool! did it take them awhile for them to gat used to you, or did they just come right up to you?
I live in New Zealand & have family in Australia, who I am visiting atm even though the video on youtube is quite old.The wildlife that is in their backyard is amazing and that's in a city of 4 million people - Sydney.Yesterday I was inches away from a Blue Tongue Lizard.I have had a couple of Cockatoos as pets in New Zealand but mixing with wild ones is an experience you have to experience to really appreciate.I live in 1 of the most beautiful and exciting places in the world, Queenstown NZ
