the connection of "albania" with "alpine" & "white" should probably viewed as correct but with the understanding that it doesn't mean white people, but it refers to alpine areas having white tops (the snow on the mountain peaks). there is a british alban too deriving from the white chalk cliffs of Dover.
@muslUnbounded yeah but Albanians through their descent have generally been described as tall people with white features, which of course is not the case for every modern day Albanian but years ago it was, and even today those are the traits that most of Albanians (who had good nutrition through their upbringing and didn't have an agonizing life) have.
@vinkoMalsori, i don't think the albanians would have called themselves white people when they were surrounded by white people, logically they called themselves albanian because of the alpine (white-peaked) mountains. not only were the peaks white in winter but much of the rest of the country as well, compare that with the warmer coastlands to the south which would be much greener.
now if the albanian language resembles ancient greek, perhaps the albanians should consider themselves a tribe of greeks, or having derived speech from their neighbors, the greeks.

The modern day Greek language is way different than the ancient Greek (of Homer) so i guess it hasn't continued oh so well. the connection of "albania" with "alpine" & "white" should probably viewed as correct but with the understanding that it doesn't mean white people, but it refers to alpine areas having white tops (the snow on the mountain peaks). there is a british alban too deriving from the white chalk cliffs of Dover.

@vinkoMalsori, by the way, if the albanian language is more ancient than greek it only means that greeks continued speaking the indo-european tongue longer, which is what you would expect if the greeks were still in contact with the rest of the indo-european peoples, while the albanians had become isolated and developed separately. an interesting note about the genes is that the "albanians" shown on ethnic maps surrounding attica do not show up in the gene maps.

The modern day Greek language is way different than the ancient Greek (of Homer) so i guess it hasn't continued oh so well. As far as making assumptions based on the genetic content of Albanians or Greeks or any other peoples of that region of the world is nearly impossible because of all of the conquests and the products of those conquests and the mixing via marriages...

That would be the best way to go about things, in a perfect world, but as we know the Balkan peninsula is far, far away from the perfect world exactly because of the nationalism and hatred between people. I do agree that we have a lot in common because of the long history that we share and if we did work together in issues we would discover even more similarities, but... we can't, we have our Cham brothers who have been tortured and degraded for years and that's where, sadly, gets complicated.
